Classical dances is a small topic but it appears in almost every exam. The whole list has only eight dances. Once you match each dance to its state, you can answer any question from this topic. This post gives you the list, the key features of each dance, and 12 real questions from past papers.
Key Points (Quick Revision)
- The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognises eight classical dance forms
- Kerala has two — Kathakali and Mohiniyattam
- Kathak is the only one from North India (Uttar Pradesh)
- Manipuri is the only one from the North East
- Tamil Nadu's Bharatanatyam is considered the oldest
1. The complete list — dance and state
Start with this table. If you remember only this much, you can answer most questions from this topic.
| Dance | State | Known For |
|---|---|---|
| Bharatanatyam | Tamil Nadu | Oldest classical dance; fixed upper body, bent legs |
| Kathak | Uttar Pradesh | Fast footwork and spins; storytelling |
| Kathakali | Kerala | Heavy make-up and masks; performed by men |
| Mohiniyattam | Kerala | Gentle, graceful; solo dance by women |
| Kuchipudi | Andhra Pradesh | Dance on a brass plate; quick footwork |
| Odissi | Odisha | Temple sculpture poses; tribhanga stance |
| Manipuri | Manipur | Soft and rounded movements; Ras Leela themes |
| Sattriya | Assam | Newest addition (2000); from Vaishnav monasteries |
2. Two dances that confuse students
Kerala has two classical dances and students often mix them up. Here is the simple difference.
Kathakali is loud and dramatic. Dancers wear heavy make-up, large costumes and painted faces. It is mostly performed by men and tells stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Mohiniyattam is the opposite. It is soft and graceful, performed solo by women in a simple white and gold saree. The name comes from Mohini, a form of Lord Vishnu.
One more pair to keep separate. Kathak and Kathakali sound similar but have nothing in common. Kathak is from Uttar Pradesh in the north. Kathakali is from Kerala in the south.
📌 Exam Focus
- Most asked: which state does a given dance belong to
- Common trap: Kathak (Uttar Pradesh) and Kathakali (Kerala) are swapped in options
- Remember: Sattriya was added in 2000, so it is the newest of the eight
3. Famous exponents of each dance
Exams sometimes ask which dancer is linked with which form. These are the names that appear most often.
| Dance | Famous Exponents |
|---|---|
| Bharatanatyam | Rukmini Devi Arundale, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Padma Subrahmanyam |
| Kathak | Birju Maharaj, Sitara Devi, Shambhu Maharaj |
| Kathakali | Kalamandalam Gopi, Kottakkal Sivaraman |
| Mohiniyattam | Sunanda Nair, Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma |
| Kuchipudi | Raja and Radha Reddy, Yamini Krishnamurthy |
| Odissi | Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sonal Mansingh |
| Manipuri | Guru Bipin Singh, Jhaveri Sisters |
| Sattriya | Sankaradeva (founder tradition), Jatin Goswami |
Birju Maharaj for Kathak and Kelucharan Mohapatra for Odissi are the two names asked most often. Note that Yamini Krishnamurthy appears against two dances, which is why she shows up in tricky questions.
4. Folk dances — do not mix these up
Exams often place a folk dance among classical options to confuse you. Folk dances are not classical. Keep these separate.
| Folk Dance | State |
|---|---|
| Bhangra, Giddha | Punjab |
| Garba, Dandiya | Gujarat |
| Ghoomar, Kalbeliya | Rajasthan |
| Lavani | Maharashtra |
| Bihu | Assam |
| Chhau | Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal |
| Yakshagana | Karnataka |
Note that Assam appears in both lists. Sattriya is its classical dance, and Bihu is its folk dance. This pair is a favourite in exams.
