Delhi Police Constable Exam: Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the recruitment on behalf of the Delhi Police. Constables serve in Delhi across law and order duties, traffic management, investigation support and specialised units depending on posting and later training.

Because the posting is fixed to the National Capital Territory, candidates know their location in advance, which is a meaningful difference from central armed police force recruitment where posting can be anywhere in India. The recruitment also includes separate categories such as Executive and Driver posts in some cycles, each with its own eligibility conditions stated in the notification.

The written stage is a computer based examination with objective questions across four broad areas: General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, and Computer Fundamentals. Negative marking applies to wrong answers.

The section names and their exact question counts have varied between recruitment cycles, so the notification is the only reliable source for the current structure. What has stayed consistent is the presence of a substantial General Knowledge and Current Affairs component, and the inclusion of a computer awareness portion that many candidates skip and then lose easy marks on.

Computer Fundamentals is worth attention precisely because it is small and finite. Basic elements of word processing, spreadsheets, internet and email, and common terminology cover most of what is asked. A few focused hours here return more marks per hour than almost anything else in the paper.

The General Knowledge and Current Affairs section tests awareness of the environment around the candidate and its application to society. In practice this means Indian history, geography, polity and the Constitution, economics, general science at school level, sports, awards and honours, books and authors, important days, and current events of roughly the last year.

Delhi-specific general knowledge deserves a separate revision sheet. Questions about the city's administration, notable monuments, its geography and its civic institutions appear in Delhi Police papers in a way they do not in national recruitment exams. It is a small, finite list and easy to prepare.

The bulk of the section, however, is standard Static GK. Organisation headquarters, countries and currencies, national parks, classical dances and important days repeat across cycles. These lists are worth learning once, properly, because they serve this exam and every other SSC exam you attempt.

The educational qualification is generally a 12th pass from a recognised board, with specific relaxations available to certain categories such as wards of eligible serving or retired Delhi Police personnel, as stated in the notification. Some cycles also require a valid driving licence for Driver category posts.

The Physical Endurance and Measurement Test is qualifying. It measures height, chest for male candidates, and performance in a race, long jump and high jump, with different standards for male and female candidates and relaxations for hill area and scheduled tribe candidates.

These standards are published in full in the notification and should be checked against your own measurements before applying, not after clearing the written stage. Candidates lose selections here every cycle simply because they never tested themselves against the actual numbers.

The most efficient route is to treat this as one exam within an SSC preparation cycle rather than a standalone target. Prepare General Studies once and attempt Delhi Police, SSC GD, SSC MTS and SSC CHSL from the same base.

Begin with Static GK and general science, because they are finite, repeat across cycles and never expire. Add Indian history, polity and geography through short notes and previous-year questions rather than thick reference books. Keep current affairs to one monthly compilation revised twice. Add two small dedicated sheets: one for Delhi-specific GK and one for computer fundamentals.

For Reasoning and Numerical Ability, daily timed practice matters more than theory. Twenty questions a day, reviewed honestly, will do more than reading a full book once.
