MPESB Group 4 is the combined recruitment for clerical and allied posts in the Madhya Pradesh government, held by the Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB), based in Bhopal. The board was earlier known as Vyapam and then the Professional Examination Board. Through Group 4 it fills posts such as Assistant Grade 3, Steno Typist, Stenographer and Data Entry Operator across state departments.

The selection rests on two things: a computer-based objective exam, and computer and typing proficiency, usually proved through the state's CPCT (Computer Proficiency Certification Test). Candidates who prepare only for the written test often miss the CPCT step.

Key takeaways
  • One computer-based objective exam for all Group 4 posts in a cycle.
  • The paper has covered general Hindi, general English, GK with MP emphasis, reasoning, maths and computer knowledge.
  • Many posts need a valid CPCT score; steno posts also need shorthand.
  • Questions, marks, age band and the post list are fixed in each MPESB rule book - confirm them there.

The posts under Group 4

Group 4 is a combined recruitment. One exam fills several clerical and support posts.

Candidates choose the posts and departments they want during the form or the preference stage. The final allotment depends on the merit, the preference order and the vacancies.

The exact post list, departments and vacancies are given in each MPESB notification. Read it fully before applying.

The written exam

The written exam has been a single computer-based objective test, held over several shifts and normalised across them.

The syllabus has been built around these sections:

  • General Hindi - grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage.
  • General English - grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • General knowledge - history, geography, polity and economy of India and Madhya Pradesh, general science and current affairs.
  • Reasoning and mental ability.
  • General mathematics - arithmetic of the secondary standard.
  • Computer knowledge - basics of hardware, software, MS Office, internet and email.

Hindi and GK have carried the largest share in recent cycles. There has been no negative marking in many MPESB exams, but this is fixed in each rule book, so check before you guess.

The number of questions, marks per section, duration and normalisation method are given in the current rule book. Plan from the latest one.

CPCT and skill tests

The CPCT is a computer-based test run by the state that certifies computer proficiency and typing speed in Hindi and English. Madhya Pradesh has made a valid CPCT score a requirement for many clerical and data-entry posts.

  • The CPCT has had a computer proficiency section and separate Hindi and English typing sections.
  • The score is valid for a fixed number of years from the result date.
  • In some cycles, candidates without a CPCT score have been allowed to join on the condition that they pass it within a set period after appointment.

For Steno Typist and Stenographer posts, a shorthand test at a prescribed speed has also been required.

The CPCT rule, minimum typing speed, shorthand speed and grace period differ between notifications. Check the current one, and if you have no CPCT score, plan to take the next CPCT early.

Who can apply

The academic requirement has been higher secondary (12th) from a recognised board for most posts. Some posts have asked for a diploma or certificate in computer applications or a steno qualification.

The age limit is counted on a date stated in the notification. Madhya Pradesh has given a more generous upper age limit to domiciled candidates than to candidates from other states, along with relaxations for reserved categories, women and other groups under state rules.

Reservation benefits apply to candidates who are domiciled in Madhya Pradesh and belong to the reserved categories of the state. Employment exchange registration has been required in some cycles.

The qualification per post, CPCT rule, age band, domicile rule and vacancies are set in each notification. Check them before applying.

Madhya Pradesh GK - what to cover

MP questions form a large share of the GK section. Treat the state as a subject in itself.

  • Formation - Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956 under the States Reorganisation Act, by merging Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal State with the Mahakoshal region. Chhattisgarh was carved out of it on 1 November 2000. Bhopal is the capital.
  • History - the rock shelters of Bhimbetka, the Mauryan stupa at Sanchi, Ujjain and Vidisha, the Paramaras and Raja Bhoj, the Chandelas of Khajuraho, Rani Durgavati, the Holkars and Ahilyabai Holkar, the Scindias of Gwalior, and Tatya Tope and Rani Lakshmibai in 1857.
  • Heritage - Khajuraho, Sanchi and Bhimbetka, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the forts of Gwalior, Mandu and Orchha.
  • Geography - the Narmada, which flows west through a rift valley, the Chambal, Betwa, Son and Tapti; the Vindhya and Satpura ranges; Dhupgarh in the Pachmarhi hills as the highest point; the Malwa plateau; and the Indira Sagar and Gandhi Sagar dams.
  • Wildlife - Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Satpura tiger reserves, and Kuno National Park, where cheetahs were reintroduced in 2022.
  • Culture - the Gond and Bhil tribes, the Bhagoria festival, Gond and Bhil art, Tansen of Gwalior, the Simhastha Kumbh at Ujjain, and Malwi and Bundeli traditions.
  • Economy and administration - soybean and wheat, diamonds at Panna, the state budget and schemes, the Vidhan Sabha and the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur.

District counts and scheme names have changed in recent years. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.

How to prepare for MPESB Group 4

Split your time between the written exam and the skill side from the very first week.

Hindi and MP GK first. They carry the biggest share. Use a standard MP GK book and keep a notebook of rulers, rivers, parks and tribes.

English, maths and reasoning. Solve a timed set every day from a standard clerk-level book.

Computer knowledge. Learn MS Office shortcuts, file types, internet and email basics; they also help in the CPCT.

Typing every day. Practise Hindi and English typing for 30 minutes daily. If you have no CPCT score, register for the next CPCT.

Current affairs. Follow national news and MP news together, especially schemes and the state budget.

In the final months, solve previous MPESB papers and full mocks under exam timing. For other MP exams, see the MP Patwari, MP Police Constable and MPPSC guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Ignoring CPCT. Without a valid score you may not be eligible, or may lose the job later.
  2. Leaving typing for the end. Speed builds slowly.
  3. Treating MP GK as an afterthought. It is where many marks are won or lost.
  4. Weak preference filling. Choose posts and departments carefully; you cannot change them later.
  5. Using an old rule book. MPESB changes the scheme between cycles; work only from the current one.
