NVS recruitment is how Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti hires teachers and staff for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas - the residential schools run under the Ministry of Education, largely in rural districts across the country. Like Kendriya Vidyalayas, these are central government posts, but the job itself is quite different.
One clarification first, because the two are constantly mixed up. This page is about staff recruitment - teachers and non-teaching employees. The JNVST, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test, is a separate admission test for students entering Class VI. If you are looking for a job, NVS recruitment is what you need; if you are looking for a school seat, it is not.
What makes a Navodaya posting different
The feature that defines Navodaya Vidyalayas is that they are fully residential. Students live on campus, and that shapes the teacher's role far beyond classroom hours.
Staff have generally been expected to live on campus. A Navodaya teacher is part of the residential life of the school - supervision, house responsibilities and co-curricular activities are part of the job, not additions to it. Candidates who expect a day-school routine are often surprised by this.
Schools are mostly in rural districts. Navodaya Vidyalayas were set up to bring quality residential education to rural children, one school per district in most of the country. Postings therefore tend to be away from cities, and the service carries all-India transfer liability.
The service is central. Pay and service conditions follow central government rules, which is why the posts attract candidates from every state despite the residential and rural conditions.
Settle these questions honestly before you invest a year. A candidate who clears the exam and then declines a residential rural posting has spent that year reaching a decision that could have been made at the start.
Posts covered - teaching and non-teaching
NVS recruitment notifications have covered a wide range of posts rather than a single cadre, which is why the exam cannot be described by one pattern.
On the teaching side, notifications have included Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) and Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) across subjects, along with specialised teaching posts such as music, art and physical education teachers, and third-language teachers who are placed in schools of a different linguistic region.
On the non-teaching side, notifications have covered posts such as staff nurse, catering assistant, lab attendant, electrician-cum-plumber, lower division clerk, stenographer, accountant and computer operator, along with posts at the regional and head office level.
Two things follow for a candidate. First, each post carries its own eligibility, its own paper and its own merit list, so preparation depends entirely on the post you target. Second, NVS recruitment has not followed a fixed annual cycle - large notifications have come at irregular intervals, and a candidate should prepare so that they are ready when one appears rather than waiting for a date.
The list of posts, vacancies per post and region, and the eligibility attached to each are set in each notification. Read the one that is current, not the last one you saw.

The exam - what teaching candidates are tested on
For the teaching posts, the written examination has been an objective computer-based test spread across several components rather than one deep subject. The components used in recent notifications have drawn on:
- General awareness and current affairs
- Reasoning ability
- Knowledge of computers at a basic level
- Teaching aptitude and pedagogy
- Subject knowledge for the post applied for - the largest component for PGT and TGT posts
- Languages, with Hindi and English both tested
Some teaching notifications have also included a further stage such as an interview after the written test, and specialised posts have had their own skill or performance component. Non-teaching posts have been tested on patterns suited to the work, including skill tests where the post requires typing or stenography.
Because the subject component carries the most weight for PGT and TGT posts, that is where candidates in the same subject separate. The remaining components are small individually, but together they are large enough that skipping any one of them costs rank.
The number of questions, marks per component, duration, negative marking and whether an interview applies have differed between notifications and between posts. Take the scheme for your post from the current notification before you plan mocks around it.
Eligibility - qualification, CTET and the third-language posts
Eligibility for NVS teaching posts has followed the pattern familiar from other central schools, with a few details worth checking closely.
PGT posts have required a master's degree in the relevant subject along with a teacher training degree. TGT posts have required a bachelor's degree in the subject with a teacher training degree and a pass in CTET Paper-II, the paper for classes VI to VIII. Minimum percentages apply to the degrees, with relaxations for reserved categories.
The third-language TGT posts deserve a separate mention. Navodaya Vidyalayas follow a scheme under which students from one linguistic region study in a school of another, so a teacher of a regional language may be posted outside the state where that language is spoken. The eligibility for these posts has included studying that language at the required level.
Proficiency in teaching through Hindi and English has been expected for teaching posts, and an upper age limit applies to each post, with relaxations for reserved categories and for serving Navodaya employees.
The exact degrees accepted, minimum percentages, CTET requirement, age limits and relaxations differ by post and have been revised between notifications. Read the eligibility annexure for your post in the current notification before you apply.
How to prepare when notifications are irregular
The hardest part of NVS recruitment is not the syllabus but the timing. Large notifications have come at irregular intervals, which means the candidates who succeed are usually the ones who were already prepared when the notification arrived.
Build your preparation on the parts that transfer. Subject knowledge, pedagogy and reasoning are the same material you would need for KVS, DSSSB and state teacher recruitments, so steady preparation for NVS is never wasted even in a year without a notification. Treat NVS as one target among several central school recruitments rather than as your only exam.
Give subject knowledge the largest block, because it carries the most weight for PGT and TGT posts. Keep pedagogy in the same notes as your CTET preparation, since the ground overlaps almost completely.
Close the small components early. Basic computer knowledge and reasoning are finite and can be finished in a few weeks, after which they need only revision. General awareness needs a fixed daily slot rather than a last-minute push.
Keep your documents and CTET certificate current, so that nothing stands between you and the form when it opens. And think seriously about the residential, rural posting before you apply - it is the one condition of this job that preparation cannot change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NVS recruitment the same as the Navodaya entrance exam?
No. NVS recruitment is for teachers and non-teaching staff in Navodaya Vidyalayas. The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) is a separate admission test for students seeking entry to Class VI.
Do NVS teachers have to live on campus?
Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential schools, and staff have generally been expected to live on campus and take part in residential responsibilities such as supervision and co-curricular activities. Check the service conditions stated in the current notification.
Is CTET required for NVS TGT posts?
A pass in CTET Paper-II has been part of the eligibility for TGT posts, alongside a bachelor's degree in the subject and a teacher training degree. Confirm the exact requirement for your post in the current notification.
What is the difference between NVS and KVS teacher recruitment?
Both are central government school recruitments with all-India transfer liability. Navodaya Vidyalayas are residential schools mostly in rural districts, where staff take part in campus life, while Kendriya Vidyalayas are day schools located mainly near central government establishments.
How often does NVS release recruitment notifications?
NVS recruitment has not followed a fixed annual cycle, and large notifications have come at irregular intervals. Candidates are better served by preparing steadily, alongside other central school recruitments, so they are ready when a notification appears.
Are there non-teaching posts in NVS recruitment?
Yes. Notifications have covered non-teaching posts such as staff nurse, catering assistant, lab attendant, lower division clerk, stenographer and accountant, each with its own eligibility and test pattern.
