TSPSC Group 1 is the top state civil services examination of Telangana. It is conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC), which is headquartered in Hyderabad. Posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Commercial Tax Officer are filled through it, which makes it the most sought-after recruitment in the state.

A large part of the syllabus overlaps with the UPSC Civil Services, so many aspirants prepare for both. What sets TSPSC Group 1 apart is its Telangana focus. One full mains paper is devoted to the Telangana Movement and State Formation, and Telangana history, geography and economy run through the other papers too.

Key takeaways
  • Selection has run through an objective preliminary test used for screening and a descriptive main examination.
  • The mains has had six papers of General Studies type, plus a qualifying English paper.
  • Paper VI, Telangana Movement and State Formation, is unique to this exam.
  • The number of questions, marks, age band, interview rule and post list are fixed in each TSPSC notification - confirm them there.

Exam structure at a glance

The Group 1 exam has two main hurdles. The first filters, the second decides.

StageNaturePurpose
Preliminary testOne objective paper - General Studies and Mental AbilityScreening only; short-lists candidates for the mains
Main examinationSix descriptive papers plus a qualifying English paperDecides the final merit

The preliminary test is a screening test. Its marks have not been added to the final merit. TSPSC calls a fixed multiple of the vacancies, category by category, to write the mains.

In the recent scheme, the final merit has been drawn from the mains marks. Whether an interview is part of the process has changed over the years, so check the current notification on this point before you plan.

The number of questions, marks, duration, negative marking and short-listing ratio are printed in each notification. They have been revised in the past, so work from the latest one.

The preliminary test

The prelims has been a single objective paper on General Studies and Mental Ability. The syllabus has covered:

  • Current affairs - regional, national and international
  • International relations and events
  • General science, and India's achievements in science and technology
  • Environmental issues and disaster management
  • Economic and social development of India and Telangana
  • Geography of the world, India and Telangana
  • History and cultural heritage of India, with emphasis on Telangana
  • Indian Constitution and polity, with a focus on local self-government
  • Society, policies and the Telangana Movement
  • Logical reasoning, analytical ability and data interpretation
  • Basic English of the 10th class standard

Since the paper is only a screening test, the aim is a safe margin above the likely cut-off. Accuracy in the Telangana sections and current affairs usually makes the difference, because the national topics are prepared well by almost everyone.

The number of questions, negative marking and the medium of the question paper are stated in the current notification. Check them before you begin mocks.

Telangana GK - what to cover

Telangana questions appear in the prelims, fill a whole mains paper and enrich the other papers. Treat the state as a subject in itself.

  • Formation - Telangana became a separate state on 2 June 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. Hyderabad is the capital.
  • The movement - the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1956, the Mulki rules, the 1969 agitation, the Six-Point Formula of 1973, the renewed movement after 2001, and the committees and events that led to the 2014 Act.
  • History - the Kakatiyas of Warangal, the Qutb Shahis of Golconda, the Asaf Jahi Nizams, the Telangana armed struggle, and the merger of Hyderabad State with India in September 1948.
  • Heritage - the Ramappa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Thousand Pillar Temple, Charminar, Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi tombs.
  • Geography - the Deccan plateau, the Godavari and Krishna rivers, the Musi, the Nagarjunasagar and Sriram Sagar projects, and the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme.
  • Culture - Bathukamma and Bonalu, Pochampally ikat, Nirmal paintings, Perini dance and Telugu literature.
  • Economy and schemes - agriculture, IT in Hyderabad, pharma, the state budget and major welfare schemes.

District counts, scheme names and administrative details are revised from time to time. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.

How to prepare for TSPSC Group 1

A single plan that serves both stages works best, because the prelims and mains share most of the syllabus.

Foundation first. NCERT books for history, geography, polity, economy and science build the base for every paper.

Telangana as its own subject. Study the Telangana Movement paper from the official syllabus outline and the standard state books. Keep a separate notebook for Telangana history, geography, culture and schemes, and revise it weekly.

Daily current affairs. Follow national news and Telangana news together. State budgets, schemes and events are frequent question sources.

Answer writing from month two. Write two or three answers a day and one essay a week in the medium you will use in the exam.

English practice. Set aside time each week for the qualifying English paper - comprehension, precis and letter writing.

In the final months, solve previous TSPSC papers and full mocks under exam timing. For nearby state services, see the APPSC Group 1, KPSC KAS and OPSC OAS guides, and the UPSC CSE guide for the national exam.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Treating the prelims as the goal. It is a screening test; the mains decides everything.
  2. Leaving Paper VI for the end. The Telangana Movement paper needs time, and it carries the same marks as any other paper.
  3. Ignoring the qualifying English paper. Failing it cancels all your other marks.
  4. Waiting too long to write answers. Mains writing speed builds slowly.
  5. Using an old scheme. TSPSC has revised the pattern before; work only from the current notification.
