The NDA exam carries more General Knowledge weight than any other exam covered on this site. Of the 900 marks in the written examination, 400 belong to General Knowledge alone — more than the entire Mathematics paper. Candidates who treat it as a mathematics exam with some GK attached usually clear the written stage by a narrow margin, or not at all. The other surprise is the second stage: the SSB is a five-day assessment, not an interview, and it carries the same 900 marks as the written exam. This guide covers both stages, the GAT breakdown and eligibility.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Conducted by UPSC twice a year for the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy.
  • Written exam: Mathematics 300 marks + General Ability Test 600 marks = 900 marks.
  • Inside the GAT: English 200 marks and General Knowledge 400 marks.
  • SSB assessment carries another 900 marks, so the two stages weigh equally.
  • Open to unmarried candidates after Class 12; women are now eligible.

What NDA is and where selection leads

The National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla trains cadets for the Army, Navy and Air Force together, which makes it unusual among military academies anywhere. The Union Public Service Commission conducts the entrance examination for it twice a year, along with entry to the Indian Naval Academy course.

Selected candidates undergo three years of training at the Academy, during which they also complete a degree, before moving to their service-specific academy — the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun for Army cadets, the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala for Navy cadets, and the Air Force Academy at Hyderabad for Air Force cadets. Commissioning as an officer follows the completion of that stage.

The route matters for how you plan. This is an entry taken straight after Class 12, so the competition is with school-leavers rather than graduates, and the syllabus sits at school level. What makes it hard is not difficulty but breadth: one paper covers school mathematics in full, and another covers physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, current affairs and English together.

Because it is a defence entry, clearing the written stage and the SSB is not the end. Medical standards are strict and are assessed separately, and candidates are advised to check them early rather than after investing a year in preparation.

The written exam — Mathematics and the General Ability Test

The written stage has two objective papers, both written on the same day.

PaperQuestionsMarksDuration
Mathematics1203002 hours 30 minutes
General Ability Test (GAT)1506002 hours 30 minutes
Total270900

Note the marks per question, because it changes how you allocate time. Each Mathematics question is worth 2.5 marks, while each GAT question is worth 4 marks. A GAT question is therefore worth more than one and a half Mathematics questions, yet candidates routinely spend the larger share of their preparation on Mathematics.

Negative marking applies to both papers at one-third of the marks allotted to the question. That means roughly 0.83 marks lost on a wrong Mathematics answer and about 1.33 marks lost on a wrong answer in the General Ability Test. Wild guessing there is expensive; educated elimination is not.

The Mathematics syllabus covers algebra, matrices and determinants, trigonometry, analytical geometry of two and three dimensions, differential calculus, integral calculus and differential equations, vector algebra, and statistics and probability. It is the Class 11 and 12 syllabus, and there is no shortcut around actually knowing it.

Inside the GAT — where 400 marks of General Knowledge sit

The General Ability Test is a single paper split into two parts, and the second part is where the exam is really decided.

PartSectionMarks
Part AEnglish200
Part BPhysics100
Part BChemistry60
Part BGeneral Science40
Part BHistory and Freedom Movement80
Part BGeography80
Part BCurrent Events40

Part B adds up to 400 marks. Read that against the Mathematics paper's 300 and the position becomes clear: General Knowledge is the single largest block in this exam, and Physics alone at 100 marks is a third of the Mathematics paper.

The English section tests grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion at Class 12 level. It is 200 marks and largely predictable, which makes it the most reliable scoring area in the paper for a candidate who prepares it seriously.

Within Part B, the physics and chemistry portions follow the school syllabus — properties of matter, motion and its laws, work and energy, heat, light, sound, magnetism and electricity for physics; physical and chemical changes, elements and compounds, acids bases and salts, and the properties of common gases for chemistry. General Science covers the basics of living organisms, the human body and its needs, food and nutrition, and common epidemics.

History covers Indian history with emphasis on culture and civilisation, the freedom movement, the Constitution and administration, along with elements of world history. Geography covers the earth, landforms, atmosphere and climate, oceans, and the regional geography of India including its agriculture, industry and transport. Current Events covers recent developments in India and the world, along with sports and prominent personalities.

SSB assessment, eligibility and age

Candidates who clear the written stage are called for the Services Selection Board assessment, which carries 900 marks — the same as the entire written examination. It runs over about five days and comes in two stages.

Stage 1 is a screening held on the first day, combining an Officer Intelligence Rating test with the Picture Perception and Description Test. A large proportion of candidates are screened out here and return the same day. Stage 2, for those who remain, includes psychological tests, group testing tasks conducted by the Group Testing Officer, a personal interview, and a final conference where the board takes its decision.

The assessment is looking for officer-like qualities rather than knowledge — reasoning under pressure, initiative, cooperation within a group, and the ability to communicate a decision clearly. It cannot be prepared for the way a syllabus can, but familiarity with the format removes a good deal of avoidable disadvantage.

On eligibility, candidates must be unmarried, and the age band sits in the range of roughly 16 and a half to 19 and a half years, calculated against the cut-off dates published in each notification. Because the window is narrow and tied to date of birth, verify it precisely from the notification for the cycle you intend to write.

The educational requirement depends on the wing. For the Army wing of the Academy, a Class 12 pass from a recognised board is sufficient. For the Air Force and Naval wings and for the Indian Naval Academy course, Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is required. Candidates appearing in Class 12 may apply, subject to producing proof of passing.

A significant change is worth stating plainly: women are now eligible, following the Supreme Court's intervention, and both men and women write the same examination and the same assessment.

How to prepare for a 900-mark written paper

Let the marks set the plan. Mathematics is 300 marks, English is 200, and General Knowledge is 400. A preparation schedule that mirrors that split will already put you ahead of most candidates, who reverse it.

For Mathematics, work from the NCERT textbooks of Class 11 and 12 rather than competitive guides, then move to practice sets. The paper rewards accuracy over speed because of the negative marking, so build a habit of solving completely rather than recognising partially.

For Physics and Chemistry, again use the school textbooks. The questions are conceptual rather than numerical-heavy, which means understanding a phenomenon well is worth more than memorising formulas. At 160 marks combined, these two subjects deserve as much time as a full subject in any other exam.

For History and Geography, at 80 marks each, the NCERT books from Class 6 to 10 give the right level and the right coverage. Add a short revision layer on the freedom movement and on Indian physical geography, since those two areas produce the largest share of questions.

Keep Current Events focused. Forty marks does not justify collecting material endlessly — one newspaper daily plus a monthly compilation, revised twice, covers it. Defence-related developments, sports and prominent personalities are worth a separate one-page sheet.

For English, read consistently and work through grammar and vocabulary systematically. Two hundred marks from a predictable syllabus is the best return available in this paper.

Finally, treat the SSB as part of preparation rather than something that begins after the result. Practising the reasoning tests, reading about the group tasks and being able to speak clearly about your own choices costs little and matters at a stage worth 900 marks. Candidates building the General Studies base for the NDA exam will find the same foundation serves UPSC Civil Services and SSC GD Constable. Frequently Asked Questions

How many marks is General Knowledge in the NDA exam?

General Knowledge carries 400 marks, within the 600-mark General Ability Test. It is split as Physics 100, History and Freedom Movement 80, Geography 80, Chemistry 60, General Science 40 and Current Events 40. That is more than the 300-mark Mathematics paper.

Is there negative marking in NDA?

Yes, one-third of the marks allotted to a question. Since Mathematics questions carry 2.5 marks and General Ability Test questions carry 4 marks, a wrong answer costs about 0.83 marks in Mathematics and about 1.33 marks in the GAT. Guessing there is therefore expensive.

Can girls apply for NDA?

Yes. Women are now eligible for the National Defence Academy following the Supreme Court's intervention, and both men and women write the same written examination and SSB assessment. Candidates must be unmarried.

What is the eligibility and age limit for NDA?

Candidates must be unmarried and in the age band of roughly 16 and a half to 19 and a half years against the cut-off dates in the notification. A Class 12 pass is required for the Army wing, while the Air Force and Naval wings and the Naval Academy course require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

How many marks is the SSB interview in NDA?

The SSB assessment carries 900 marks, exactly equal to the written examination, giving a total of 1800 marks. It runs over about five days in two stages — a screening test on the first day, followed by psychological tests, group testing tasks, a personal interview and a final conference.
