UPTET is the first of two examinations, not the only one. Clearing it gives you a certificate of eligibility and nothing more — the actual assistant teacher post in Uttar Pradesh comes through a separate recruitment examination, commonly called Super TET. Candidates who stop preparing after UPTET find themselves facing a harder paper a few months later with no time left. The one piece of good news is that the certificate is now valid for life, so a single qualifying attempt covers every recruitment that follows. This guide covers both papers, the language choices, the Super TET step and eligibility.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Conducted by the examination authority of the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board.
  • Eligibility test only — the teaching post comes through Super TET.
  • Paper 1 for classes I to V; Paper 2 for classes VI to VIII.
  • Each paper has 150 questions for 150 marks in about two and a half hours.
  • Qualifying mark is generally 60 per cent, relaxed for reserved categories.
  • The certificate is valid for lifetime.

UPTET and Super TET — the two-step route

This is the part candidates most often misunderstand, and it decides how you should plan the whole year.

StepWhat it isWhat it gives you
1. UPTETTeacher eligibility testA certificate of eligibility. No job, no merit list
2. Super TETAssistant teacher recruitment examinationThe actual selection and posting

Three consequences follow.

Super TET is the harder paper. It carries the same child development and subject ground at greater depth, plus a substantial Uttar Pradesh layer and questions on teaching aptitude and management. A candidate who scraped through UPTET is not ready for it.

Your academic record can count at the recruitment stage. Weightage for marks in Class 10, Class 12, graduation and the professional qualification has featured in the selection formula, alongside the Super TET score. That formula is set out in the recruitment advertisement and has been revised, so read it there rather than assuming.

The two are often far apart in time. A candidate may clear UPTET in one year and face recruitment in another, which is exactly why lifetime validity of the certificate matters.

The comparison worth keeping in mind is with CTET, the national eligibility test, and REET in Rajasthan. All three are eligibility tests rather than recruitments and all three now carry lifetime validity. The difference is jurisdiction and the state layer each one carries.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 — pattern and language choice

Both papers carry 150 questions for 150 marks, and each section is worth 30 marks unless stated otherwise.

Language II — English, Urdu or Sanskrit30

Paper 2 — classes VI to VIII

Hindi is fixed as Language I, and the choice is only in Language II — English, Urdu or Sanskrit. Make that choice on what you can actually answer, since it is fixed at the application stage and each option has its own grammar and literature content.

UPTET has generally been conducted without negative marking, which changes attempt strategy completely: there is no reason to leave a question blank. Confirm this from the current notification, since marking schemes have been revised in other state tests recently.

In Paper 2, the 60-question subject block is chosen at the application stage between Mathematics with Science and Social Studies. It is more than a third of the paper, so choose on your graduation subject rather than on which looks easier.

Eligibility and qualifying marks

The two papers have separate qualifications, and a candidate meeting both may appear for both.

Paper 1Paper 2
TeachesClasses I to VClasses VI to VIII
AcademicSenior Secondary with the prescribed percentageGraduation with the prescribed percentage
ProfessionalD.El.Ed or BTC, or an equivalent recognised courseB.Ed or an equivalent recognised course

The professional qualification is not interchangeable. A B.Ed does not qualify you for Paper 1 under the usual conditions, and a D.El.Ed does not qualify you for Paper 2. The position of B.Ed holders at the primary level has been litigated and revised over the years, so read the qualification clause of the current notification rather than an older account.

The qualifying mark has generally been 60 per cent, which works out to 90 of 150, with a lower threshold of around 55 per cent for reserved categories. Clearing it earns the certificate; it does not place you anywhere.

Candidates in the final year of a D.El.Ed or B.Ed are permitted in some cycles and not in others, so that clause too should be checked rather than assumed. Keep your marksheets, professional qualification certificate and category documents ready before the application window, since the details entered are verified later.

A preparation plan for the two-step route

  • Build Child Development and Pedagogy properly. Thirty marks in UPTET, more in Super TET, and the same material again in CTET. It is the highest-return block in the whole route.
  • Attempt every question in UPTET, since there has been no negative marking. Leaving blanks costs marks for nothing. Confirm the marking for your cycle first.
  • Choose Language II early — English, Urdu or Sanskrit — and prepare only that one, since each has its own grammar and literature content.
  • Start the Uttar Pradesh layer now, not after the result. State history, geography, schemes and the education system feed Super TET rather than UPTET, and that is where the gap opens.
  • Prepare Super TET alongside, not afterwards. The recruitment paper is deeper, and the gap between the two is often short.
  • Protect your academic record claims. Where weightage for past marks applies at the recruitment stage, the marksheets must match exactly what you enter.

Candidates preparing for teaching posts should also see CTET, the national eligibility test, and REET, which follows the same eligibility-then-recruitment pattern in Rajasthan. For the Delhi route, see DSSSB PRT. For General Studies preparation, see the Crazy GkTrick course catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing UPTET give me a teaching job?

No. UPTET is an eligibility test. It gives you a certificate that makes you eligible to apply for the assistant teacher recruitment examination, commonly called Super TET, which is what actually selects and posts you.

What is the difference between UPTET and Super TET?

UPTET is the eligibility test conducted by the state education board. Super TET is the separate recruitment examination for assistant teacher posts, covering the same ground at greater depth along with a Uttar Pradesh layer and teaching aptitude.

How long is the UPTET certificate valid?

It is valid for lifetime, changed from the earlier fixed period. That means one qualifying attempt covers every recruitment cycle you are otherwise eligible for, which matters because the two examinations are often far apart in time.

Is there negative marking in UPTET?

UPTET has generally been conducted without negative marking, so there is no reason to leave a question unanswered. Since marking schemes have been revised in other state tests recently, confirm it from the current notification before relying on it.

Which languages can I choose in UPTET?

Hindi is fixed as Language I. The choice is only in Language II, between English, Urdu and Sanskrit. It is fixed at the application stage, and each option has its own grammar and literature content.

What is the qualifying mark in UPTET?

Generally 60 per cent, which is 90 of 150 marks, with a lower threshold of around 55 per cent for reserved categories. Clearing it earns the certificate but does not place you on any merit list.
