Bihar Daroga is one of the few state recruitment exams where General Studies is not a section of the paper — in Prelims, it is the paper. All 100 questions come from General Studies, and clearing that stage is purely a matter of how much you know. For a candidate with a solid GS base, no other exam converts preparation into a result this directly. This guide covers both stages, the Bihar-specific portion most candidates underprepare, eligibility, physical standards and a realistic study plan.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Conducted by the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) for Sub-Inspector posts.
  • Prelims: 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours — entirely General Studies.
  • Prelims is qualifying only; the minimum qualifying mark is 30 percent.
  • Mains: two papers — General Hindi (qualifying) and General Studies plus aptitude (merit).
  • Selection = Prelims → Mains → Physical Efficiency Test → Document Verification.

Who conducts it and what the post involves

The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission conducts the recruitment for Sub-Inspector, locally known as Daroga, in the Bihar Police. A Sub-Inspector is the officer in charge of investigation at the station level, and the post carries supervisory responsibility over constables and assistant sub-inspectors.

Because postings are within Bihar, candidates know their state in advance — a meaningful difference from central armed police force recruitment, where posting can be anywhere in the country. The same commission also conducts recruitment for allied posts such as Sergeant and Assistant Superintendent in some cycles, each notified separately.

Prelims — a pure General Studies paper

The preliminary examination has 100 objective questions worth 200 marks, to be answered in two hours. Every question comes from General Studies. There is no separate mathematics, reasoning or English section at this stage.

Prelims is qualifying in nature. Candidates must score at least 30 percent to qualify, and the marks do not carry forward into the final merit. Its only function is to shortlist candidates for Mains, typically at around twenty times the number of vacancies. Negative marking applies, so confirm the exact deduction from the current notification.

The practical implication is important: Prelims does not reward marginal extra effort beyond qualifying comfortably. Clear it with room to spare, then put your energy into Mains, where the actual merit is decided.

Mains — two papers, one that counts

The main examination has two papers, and they serve very different purposes.

PaperContentCounts toward merit?
Paper 1General HindiNo — qualifying only (30 percent needed)
Paper 2General Studies, Civics, Indian History, Geography, Mathematics, Mental Ability, ScienceYes

Paper 1 is qualifying and its marks are not added to the merit list, but failing it removes you from the process entirely — so it cannot be ignored, only kept in proportion. Paper 2 decides everything. Note how much of it is General Studies territory: Civics, History, Geography and Science together outweigh the mathematics and mental ability portion.

Bihar-specific GK — the part candidates underprepare

Alongside national General Studies, BPSSC papers regularly ask about Bihar itself. This is a finite, well-defined body of material and it is where candidates from outside the state lose easy marks — and where local candidates gain them.

Worth a dedicated revision sheet: Bihar's geography including its rivers and districts, the state's history from ancient Magadha through the Mauryan and Gupta periods, its role in the freedom movement including the Champaran Satyagraha, the state's administrative structure, major state government schemes, and Bihar's art, festivals and cultural heritage such as Madhubani painting.

Ancient Indian history deserves particular attention here, because so much of it is Bihar's own history. Pataliputra, Nalanda, Vaishali, Bodh Gaya and Rajgir all sit within the state, and questions about them serve double duty in both the national and state portions of the syllabus.

Eligibility, physical standards and how to prepare

The educational qualification is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. The age band is generally 20 to 37 years with variation by category, and standard relaxations apply for reserved categories as notified. Bihar domicile requirements and reservation rules are stated in each notification and should be checked directly.

The Physical Efficiency Test is qualifying and includes a timed run, high jump, long jump and shot put, with separate standards for male and female candidates. Physical standards covering height and chest are also measured. Candidates lose selections here every cycle simply because they began training after the Mains result — start alongside your studies, not after.

For the written stages, the plan follows from the structure. Because Prelims is entirely General Studies and Mains Paper 2 is largely General Studies, one strong GS foundation carries the whole exam. Build Static GK and general science first since they are finite and permanent, then History, Polity and Geography through notes and previous-year questions, and keep a separate Bihar GK sheet running from day one. Add a monthly current affairs compilation, revised twice.

Aspirants preparing for SSC CGL or SSC CHSL already have most of this base — only the Bihar-specific portion and Hindi paper need separate work. For the full General Studies syllabus in a structured sequence, see the Crazy GkTrick course catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bihar Daroga Prelims entirely General Studies?

Yes. The preliminary examination has 100 questions worth 200 marks, and all of them come from General Studies. There is no separate mathematics, reasoning or English section at the Prelims stage, which makes a strong GS base the single deciding factor.
