BSSC CGL has one rule that changes how the entire paper should be attempted, and candidates who arrive from SSC practice get it wrong on the day. In the Preliminary Examination, a full mark is deducted for every wrong answer — not a quarter, as in most national examinations. Guess four questions and get one right, and you are worse off than if you had left all four blank. Add a Mains with a qualifying Hindi paper that has ended more attempts than the General Studies paper ever has, and this is an examination that rewards discipline over speed. This guide covers the stages, the marking, eligibility and a strategy built around both.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Conducted by the Bihar Staff Selection Commission for Graduate Level posts in the state.
  • Two written stages: Preliminary Examination → Main Examination, followed by document verification.
  • One full mark is deducted per wrong answer in Prelims — the single most important rule in this exam.
  • Prelims is qualifying only; the merit list is built from the Mains.
  • Mains includes a Hindi paper that is qualifying, with a minimum percentage to be cleared.
  • Qualification is graduation in any discipline; age limits differ by category under Bihar rules.

The negative marking rule and what to do about it

Start here, because everything else follows from it. In most national objective examinations a wrong answer costs a quarter of a mark, which makes intelligent guessing profitable — eliminate two options and the odds are in your favour. In the BSSC Preliminary Examination the deduction has been one full mark, and that reverses the arithmetic completely.

Work it through. With one-mark negative marking, a pure guess between four options wins one mark once and loses one mark three times — a net loss of two marks for every four guesses. Even a fifty-fifty guess after eliminating two options is break-even at best, and break-even is not worth the risk of a careless read.

You have eliminated three optionsAttempt
You have eliminated two optionsAttempt only if genuinely confident, not on instinct

The practical consequence is that attempt count stops being a virtue. A candidate who attempts 90 questions with 85 correct will usually finish ahead of one who attempts 130 with 95 correct. Practise papers with this marking applied, because the habit of attempting everything is built by months of quarter-mark practice and it does not switch off by itself in the examination hall.

Marking schemes have been revised between cycles and the Commission states them afresh in each notification, so confirm the deduction for the cycle you are writing before building your attempt strategy on it.

Prelims — structure and syllabus

The Preliminary Examination is a single objective paper. It has generally run to 150 questions for 150 marks across three sections, with a duration of a little over two hours.

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Studies5050
General Science and Mathematics5050
Comprehension, Reasoning and Mental Ability5050
Total150150

Prelims marks do not enter the final merit. The paper exists to shortlist candidates for the Mains, so the target is a safe qualification rather than a maximum score — which sits comfortably with the negative marking rule above.

The General Studies section carries a heavy Bihar-specific layer that no national study material covers: the history of the region including ancient Magadha, Pataliputra, the Mauryan and Gupta connections, the freedom movement in Bihar, the state's geography, rivers and agriculture, its administrative structure, and current state schemes and developments. Treat this as its own subject from the first month rather than as revision in the last.

General Science and Mathematics stays at roughly the Class 10 level — physics, chemistry and biology fundamentals alongside arithmetic, percentages, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, and basic data interpretation. The third section covers comprehension passages, series, analogy, coding-decoding, direction, blood relations and simple puzzles.

The section split and the number of questions have varied between cycles, so read the pattern table of the current notification before assuming the distribution above.

Mains — and the Hindi paper that ends attempts

The Main Examination is where the merit list is actually built, and it is structured around two papers.

PaperNatureCounts in merit?
HindiObjective, 100 marksNo — qualifying only
General Studies, General Science and Mathematics, Comprehension and ReasoningObjectiveYes

The Hindi paper is the trap. Its marks are not added to your total, which leads candidates to ignore it — but you must clear a prescribed minimum percentage in it, commonly stated as around 30 per cent, and a candidate who fails that threshold is out regardless of how well the other paper went. Every cycle produces candidates who scored well on General Studies and were eliminated by a paper that contributed nothing to their rank.

The Hindi paper tests grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, idioms and proverbs, synonyms and antonyms, and comprehension. It is a finite, learnable syllabus and the minimum bar is not high. Two focused weeks with a standard grammar book is usually enough — the failures come from candidates who gave it zero weeks, not from candidates who found it hard.

The second paper follows the Prelims subjects at greater depth, with the same Bihar-specific weight in General Studies. Because the qualifying percentage, the paper split and the marking have been revised between cycles, confirm all three from the current notification.

Candidates who clear the Mains proceed to document verification. Certificates for category, residence, educational qualification and date of birth should be ready before the result, not after, since the verification window is short.

Eligibility and a preparation plan

The educational requirement is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Certain posts within the combined advertisement carry additional requirements, and those are listed against the post in the notification rather than in the general eligibility clause.

The age limits differ by category under Bihar rules, and this is unlike most national examinations where one band applies with relaxations bolted on. The minimum has generally been 21 years, while the upper limit has been set separately for unreserved male candidates, unreserved female candidates, and backward and reserved category candidates. Read the age table of the current notification rather than a single number quoted elsewhere, because the categories genuinely have different ceilings.

A domicile or residence certificate is relevant for claiming state reservation, and candidates from outside the state are generally treated as unreserved for these posts. The application runs through the Commission's online portal.

The preparation plan follows the three rules above.

  • Build the Bihar layer as a subject. State history, geography, economy, polity and current schemes, one hour a day from the start. It appears in both stages and no national book covers it.
  • Give Hindi two real weeks. Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension to a comfortable margin above the qualifying bar, then revise once a month.
  • Practise with one-mark negative marking applied. Score your mock papers under the real rule so the instinct to attempt everything is trained out before the examination.
  • Keep General Science and Mathematics at Class 10 depth. Breadth of coverage beats difficulty here; the questions are direct.
  • Read one newspaper daily with a state-news focus alongside a monthly compilation, and keep a running sheet of Bihar schemes with objective and beneficiaries.

Candidates preparing for national graduate-level examinations in parallel should see SSC CGL, which shares most of the general syllabus, and SSC CHSL. Within the state, Bihar Police Constable and Bihar Daroga use the same Bihar-specific base. For General Studies preparation, see the Crazy GkTrick course catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much negative marking is there in BSSC CGL Prelims?

One full mark has generally been deducted for each wrong answer, not a quarter as in most national examinations. This makes guessing unprofitable — four random guesses cost you two marks on average, so questions where you cannot eliminate three options are better left blank.

Do BSSC CGL Prelims marks count in the final merit?

No. Prelims is qualifying only and exists to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination. The merit list is built from the Mains, so the sensible Prelims target is a safe qualification rather than a maximum score.

Is the Hindi paper in Mains counted in the merit?

No, but you must clear a prescribed minimum in it, commonly stated as around 30 per cent. Its marks are not added to your total, yet failing it eliminates you regardless of your General Studies score. It is the most common avoidable failure in this exam.

How much Bihar GK comes in BSSC CGL?

A substantial share, running through both stages. State history from ancient Magadha onward, the freedom movement in the region, geography and rivers, agriculture, administration and current state schemes. It should be prepared as a separate subject, not as revision.

What is the age limit for BSSC CGL?

The minimum has generally been 21 years, and the upper limit is set separately for unreserved male, unreserved female, and backward and reserved category candidates under state rules. Read the age table of the current notification rather than a single quoted number.

What qualification is needed for BSSC CGL?

A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Some posts within the combined advertisement carry additional requirements, which are listed against the post rather than in the general eligibility clause.
