Delhi Police Head Constable Exam: Posts, Pattern, Typing Test, Eligibility & Preparation

Applying to the wrong stream is the most common way candidates lose this recruitment before it starts.

Head Constable (Ministerial) handles office work - typing, records, correspondence and computer work at police stations and offices. The qualification has been Class 12, and the selection has included a typing test on computer in English or Hindi.

Head Constable (AWO/TPO) - Assistant Wireless Operator and Tele-Printer Operator - handles wireless communication and control-room work. The qualification has been Class 12 with Science and Mathematics, or an equivalent technical certificate, because the work is technical.

The two streams have been advertised separately, sometimes in different years. Read the notification you are applying under, check which stream it is, and match your certificates to its qualification line before you pay the fee.

The exact qualification for each stream, any subject requirement, and whether both streams are open in a given cycle are notification-specific. Take them from the current advertisement.

Both streams have started with a computer-based objective test, and its syllabus is broad rather than deep. The areas it has drawn on:

• General awareness - with a current affairs component
• Quantitative aptitude - arithmetic at a Class 10 level
• General intelligence and reasoning
• English language - grammar, vocabulary and comprehension
• Computer fundamentals - basic operations, MS Office, internet and email at a working level

Because the paper is moderate and the applicant pool is large, the cut-off clusters tightly. That makes accuracy and speed the deciding factors rather than knowledge - two or three careless errors move you past hundreds of candidates in the wrong direction.

The computer fundamentals section deserves more attention than its size suggests. It is finite, it can be closed in a couple of weeks, and candidates who treat it as filler lose the easiest marks on the paper.

The number of questions, marks per section, duration and negative marking rule are set in the current notification and have been revised between cycles.

For the Ministerial stream, candidates who clear the computer-based test have gone on to a typing test on computer, in English or Hindi, at a fixed minimum speed. It has been qualifying in nature - but it is the stage where a large share of otherwise strong candidates has been eliminated.

The reason is simple: typing speed cannot be built in two weeks. Candidates who prepare for the written paper for six months and then discover the typing requirement usually cannot reach the speed in the time available.

So: start typing practice on the first day of preparation, on the language you will choose, on a real keyboard, with daily timed tests. Decide the language early - Hindi typing needs a specific keyboard layout and the choice cannot be changed at the test. Aim for a speed comfortably above the minimum, because accuracy is counted and nervous errors on the day cost speed.

The AWO/TPO stream has instead carried a trade or technical component suited to the wireless work, and both streams have included a Physical Endurance and Measurement Test with standards for height, chest and a run, along with medical examination.

The required typing speed, the language options, the keyboard layout permitted, and the physical standards for each stream are set in the current notification. Build your practice targets from that document.

Beyond the stream-specific qualification, the age window is counted from a cut-off date fixed in the notification, with upper-limit relaxations for reserved categories and for certain other categories such as departmental candidates. The cut-off date decides eligibility, not the date you apply.

Because the Delhi Police is a central force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, reservation applies against central category lists, and candidates from any state have been able to apply. There is no state domicile condition of the kind state police recruitments carry.

It helps to know what the post involves before you commit. A Head Constable (Ministerial) spends most of the day at a desk in a police station or office - typing, maintaining registers, handling correspondence and computer records. An AWO/TPO works in wireless and control-room duties. Both are uniformed posts with a clear promotion line, and postings are within Delhi rather than across the country.

Keep your documents ready - Class 12 marksheets, subject certificates for the AWO/TPO stream, category certificate and identity proof - with every figure entered online matching the certificates exactly. Verification failures end attempts the exam had already won.

For the Ministerial stream, the plan has two tracks from day one: the paper and the keyboard. Doing them one after the other is how candidates lose this recruitment.

Typing every day, from the first week. Fifteen to twenty minutes of timed practice in the language you will choose, on a real keyboard. Track speed and accuracy separately. Aim to be comfortably above the minimum a month before the test, so that exam-day nerves have room to cost you a little.

Close computer fundamentals early. It is the smallest syllabus on the paper and can be finished in two weeks, after which it only needs revision.

Treat quantitative aptitude and reasoning as practice subjects. The level is Class 10; the marks come from drilling common question types until they are automatic.

Keep general awareness daily - twenty minutes, one source - and keep English grammar and vocabulary in short regular slots.

In the last two months, full-length mocks in the actual pattern, reviewed the same day, with a written list of every careless error. In a tightly clustered cut-off, that list is worth more than another book. And alongside all of it, keep a basic fitness routine for the physical standards - it is not the hard part of this recruitment, but it can still end an attempt.
