FCI Category III is the recruitment of non-executive staff in the Food Corporation of India (FCI). FCI was set up in 1965 under the Food Corporations Act, 1964, and its headquarters is in New Delhi. It buys, stores and moves foodgrains for the public distribution system across the country.

The best-known posts are Assistant Grade III in the General, Accounts, Technical and Depot cadres. Recruitment is done zone by zone, so a candidate competes for the posts of one zone. Many students search for it as FCI Category 3 or FCI Assistant Grade 3.

What FCI does

A short idea of FCI's work helps in the exam and the job:

  • It procures wheat and rice from farmers at the Minimum Support Price, together with State agencies.
  • It stores foodgrains in its own and hired godowns, and keeps the buffer stock for food security.
  • It moves grain by rail, road and sea from surplus states to deficit states.
  • It supplies grain for the public distribution system and welfare schemes under the National Food Security Act, 2013.

Assistant Grade III staff handle office work, accounts, quality checks and depot operations in this chain.

FCI - facts worth knowing

Questions on FCI's own background are common in Phase II and in GK sections:

  • FCI was set up on 14 January 1965 under the Food Corporations Act, 1964.
  • Its first district office opened at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, the rice bowl of the south.
  • It works under the Department of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
  • It was created in the years of food shortage, to secure grain for the public and to give farmers a fair price.
  • Its work grew with the Green Revolution, when wheat and rice production rose sharply.

Assistant Grade III - daily work by cadre

  • General - office work such as files, records, correspondence and data entry in FCI offices.
  • Accounts - bills, payments, accounts of procurement and storage, and audit support.
  • Technical - checking the quality of foodgrains at purchase and in storage, and pest control in godowns.
  • Depot - receipt, storage and dispatch of grain at FCI depots and godowns.
  • Hindi - translation and promotion of Hindi in official work.

Depot and Technical staff often work at godowns and procurement centres, sometimes in shifts during the harvest season.

Phase I - the common test

Phase I is an online objective test common to the Assistant Grade III posts. In recent cycles it has had three sections:

  • English Language
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Numerical Aptitude

Phase I is a screening test. A fixed multiple of the vacancies is short-listed for Phase II, zone-wise and category-wise.

Negative marking of one-fourth mark per wrong answer has applied. The number of questions, marks and time are given in the notification.

Phase II - the post-wise paper

In Phase II, each post has its own paper. In recent cycles, the papers have included:

  • A common part on General Awareness, computer awareness, reasoning, numerical aptitude and English for most posts.
  • A post-specific part:
    • Accounts - accountancy, auditing, costing and business finance.
    • Technical - agriculture, biology, chemistry and food science.
    • Hindi - Hindi language and translation.

Stenographer and typist posts also have a skill test, which is qualifying.

The final merit has been drawn from the Phase II marks, zone-wise. Phase I marks are not counted.

Age limit and zones

The age limit has varied by post. For Assistant Grade III posts, the upper limit has been 27 years, while some posts such as Junior Engineer and Stenographer have allowed a higher limit. Relaxations apply for reserved categories, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and FCI employees.

FCI recruits for five zones:

ZoneExamples of states

North-EastAssam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura

A candidate applies for one zone. The age band, zone list and state-wise vacancies are set in each notification.

How to prepare for FCI Category III

Prepare for Phase I and Phase II together. Phase II decides the rank.

Phase I speed. Practise English, reasoning and numerical aptitude at the bank clerk level with a timer.

General awareness. Cover static GK and current affairs, with special attention to food, agriculture, MSP, the public distribution system and FCI's own work.

Computer awareness. Learn MS Office, internet, file basics and simple hardware terms.

Post-specific subject. Revise your degree subject - accounts for the Accounts post, agriculture and science for the Technical post.

Mock tests. In the last two months, take full-length mocks for both phases. Review every wrong answer and keep a short notebook of facts on food policy, storage, procurement and FCI that you can revise in the final week before the exam.

For other clerk-level and central exams, see the SSC CHSL, IBPS Clerk and SSC CGL guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing the wrong post. The Technical and Accounts posts need specific degrees.
  2. Ignoring Phase II. The final merit rests on it.
  3. Skipping food and agriculture GK. FCI questions often touch these areas.
  4. Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
  5. Applying in the wrong zone. You compete and serve in the zone you choose.
