LIC ADO is the recruitment of Apprentice Development Officers in the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). LIC was formed in 1956 and has its head office, Yogakshema, in Mumbai. It is the largest life insurer in India.
A Development Officer is a marketing and team-building job. The officer recruits, trains and guides a team of LIC agents in an area, and is judged on the business that team brings in. The recruitment is held zone by zone through LIC's zonal and divisional offices.
- Stages: an online prelims, an online mains, an interview and a pre-recruitment medical test.
- The mains has included a paper on insurance and financial marketing awareness.
- Selected candidates first join as apprentices on a stipend, then as probationary Development Officers.
- Vacancies, marks, age band and the zone-wise rules are fixed in each LIC notification - confirm them there.
What a Development Officer does
The Development Officer is the link between LIC and its agents. The main duties are:
- Recruiting agents in the area assigned to the officer.
- Training and motivating them to sell LIC policies.
- Meeting business targets for new policies and premium.
- Helping customers with policies and claims through the agency team.
The job involves fieldwork and travel. Pay includes incentives linked to the team's business, so the income can grow with performance.
Who can apply - three categories
LIC has recruited ADOs from three groups:
| Category | Who |
|---|---|
| Open market | Fresh candidates who are graduates |
| LIC agents | Agents of LIC with a set number of years and business record |
| LIC employees | Serving employees of LIC who meet the conditions |
For the open market, the requirement has been a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Some extra credit has been given for a membership of the Insurance Institute of India or a marketing qualification, as the notification states.
The age limit for open-market candidates has been 21 to 30 years, with relaxations for reserved categories and other groups, and different limits for agents and employees.

Zone-wise recruitment
LIC ADO is not a single all-India merit list. Vacancies are announced division by division within each of LIC's zones, such as the Northern, Central, Eastern, Western and Southern zones.
- A candidate applies for one division.
- The candidate is expected to know the local language of the area, since the work is with local agents and customers.
- Selected officers usually serve in the division they applied for.
Read the division-wise vacancy table in the notification before you apply. The local-language rule can matter in the interview.
A practical tip: choose a division where you know the area and the people. A Development Officer builds an agency team from local contacts, so a candidate with roots in the area often finds it easier to meet targets in the first years of service. This also helps in the interview, where the panel may ask about the local market.
The preliminary exam
The prelims is an online objective test. In recent cycles it has had three sections:
- Reasoning Ability
- Numerical Ability
- English Language - qualifying in nature; its marks are not added to the score.
Candidates must clear the sectional cut-offs. The prelims only short-lists candidates for the mains, separately for each division.
Negative marking of one-fourth mark per wrong answer has applied. The number of questions, marks and time are given in the notification.
The main exam
The mains is also an online objective test. In recent cycles it has had sections on:
- Reasoning Ability and Numerical Ability
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs
- Insurance and Financial Marketing Awareness - basics of insurance, LIC's products, the insurance market, banking and marketing terms
Agents and employees have had a slightly different mains, with more weight on insurance knowledge.
Negative marking has applied. The sections, marks and time are stated in each notification.
Interview, medical and training
Candidates who clear the mains are called for an interview. The panel looks for communication skills, confidence, local knowledge and an interest in sales.
The final selection is followed by a pre-recruitment medical examination.
Selected candidates join as Apprentice Development Officers and receive a stipend during training. After the apprenticeship, they are appointed as probationary Development Officers. Confirmation depends on meeting business targets, as the service rules say.
Candidates also sign a service agreement to stay with LIC for a minimum period, as stated in the notification.
LIC - facts worth knowing
Questions on LIC itself are common in the insurance section and the interview:
- LIC was formed on 1 September 1956 under the Life Insurance Corporation Act, 1956, by bringing together more than 240 private insurers and provident societies.
- Its head office, Yogakshema, is in Mumbai.
- Its motto is "Yogakshemam Vahamyaham", taken from the Bhagavad Gita.
- LIC's shares were listed on the stock exchanges in May 2022 after its initial public offering. The government still holds the majority of its shares.
- Life insurance in India is regulated by IRDAI, set up under the IRDA Act, 1999.
ADO vs AAO vs Assistant in LIC
| Point | ADO | AAO | Assistant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature of work | Field sales and agency development | Officer work in branches and offices | Clerical work in branches |
| Recruitment | Division-wise | All-India | Division-wise |
| Pay | Salary plus incentives linked to business | Officer scale salary | Clerical scale salary |
Choose the post that suits you. A candidate who enjoys meeting people and selling will do well as an ADO; one who prefers office work may aim for AAO or Assistant.
How to prepare for LIC ADO
The syllabus is close to bank exams, with one extra subject: insurance.
Reasoning and numerical ability. Practise puzzles, seating arrangement, series, simplification, data interpretation and arithmetic at the bank clerk and PO level.
Insurance awareness. Learn basic terms such as premium, sum assured, maturity, surrender value and nominee. Know LIC's history, its main plans and the role of IRDAI.
Financial marketing. Study simple marketing ideas such as market segmentation, customer service and cross-selling, along with banking basics.
Current affairs. Follow banking, insurance and economy news for six months before the exam.
For other insurance and banking jobs, see the LIC AAO, LIC Assistant, IBPS Clerk and IRDAI Assistant Manager guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating it as a desk job. The work is field-based sales and team-building.
- Ignoring insurance awareness. It is the subject that sets this exam apart.
- Applying to the wrong division. Local language and posting matter.
- Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
- Using an old pattern. Work only from the current notification.
