IBPS SO is the recruitment of Specialist Officers in public sector banks. It is held by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), based in Mumbai. Selected candidates join as officers in Scale I, the same level as a probationary officer.
The difference is the work. A PO is a general banking officer. A Specialist Officer works in one field, such as IT, agriculture, law, human resources, marketing or official language. So the exam has a professional knowledge paper on the candidate's own subject.
- Posts have included IT Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, Law Officer, HR/Personnel Officer, Marketing Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari.
- Stages: an online prelims, an online mains on professional knowledge, and an interview.
- The final allotment uses mains and interview marks; prelims marks are not counted.
- The posts, marks, cut-offs and age band are fixed in each IBPS notification - confirm them there.
The posts under IBPS SO
IBPS SO fills specialist posts across the participating public sector banks. Posts in recent cycles have included:
| Post | Typical qualification |
|---|---|
| IT Officer | Engineering in computer science, IT or electronics, or a related postgraduate degree |
| Agricultural Field Officer | Degree in agriculture or allied fields such as horticulture, dairy, fisheries or veterinary science |
| Rajbhasha Adhikari | Master's degree in Hindi with English at graduation, or the reverse |
| Law Officer | Bachelor's degree in law, with enrolment as an advocate |
| HR/Personnel Officer | Postgraduate degree or diploma in HR, personnel management or labour law |
| Marketing Officer | MBA or PG diploma with marketing specialisation |
A candidate can apply for only one post in a cycle. The post list, vacancies and exact qualifications are given in each notification.
The preliminary exam
The prelims is an online objective test. In recent cycles it has had three sections of 50 questions each, in 120 minutes:
| Section | Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari | Other posts |
|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | English Language | English Language |
| Section 2 | Reasoning | Reasoning |
| Section 3 | General Awareness with special reference to banking | Quantitative Aptitude |
English has carried fewer marks than the other two sections, and the English marks have been qualifying in nature. Each section has its own cut-off.
Negative marking of one-fourth mark per wrong answer has applied. The prelims is only a screening stage.

The main exam
The mains is the stage that tests your field. It has had a single Professional Knowledge paper on the post applied for.
- For most posts, it has been an objective paper of about 60 questions.
- For Rajbhasha Adhikari, it has had an objective part and a descriptive part, such as essay and translation.
Examples of topics by post:
- IT Officer - databases, networking, operating systems, data structures and cyber security.
- Agricultural Field Officer - agronomy, soil science, horticulture, animal husbandry and agricultural finance.
- Law Officer - banking law, contract law, the Negotiable Instruments Act and recovery laws.
- Marketing and HR - marketing management, HR functions, labour laws and industrial relations.
Negative marking has applied in the objective part. The number of questions, marks and time are given in the notification.
Interview and provisional allotment
Candidates who clear the mains cut-off are called for a common interview, coordinated by a nodal bank with IBPS.
The final score has been made from the mains and the interview, with the mains carrying the larger share. The prelims marks are not used.
IBPS then makes a provisional allotment to the participating banks. It depends on merit, the candidate's bank preference and the vacancies reported by each bank.
The weightage of mains and interview and the allotment rules are explained in the notification.
What a Specialist Officer does
After joining, a Specialist Officer works in the bank's own department for that field. For example:
- An IT Officer supports core banking systems, digital channels, data centres and cyber security.
- An Agricultural Field Officer is usually posted to rural and semi-urban branches. The work covers crop loans, Kisan Credit Cards, farm equipment loans and the recovery of farm credit.
- A Law Officer handles legal opinions, loan documents, recovery cases and court matters.
- An HR Officer works on recruitment, training, transfers and staff welfare.
- A Marketing Officer promotes deposits, loans, insurance and other bank products.
- A Rajbhasha Adhikari promotes the use of Hindi in bank work and handles translation.
Specialist Officers go through probation like other officers. Promotion to Scale II and above follows each bank's rules.
Who can apply
Each post has its own degree requirement, as shown in the table above. Some posts also ask for minimum marks or registration with a professional body.
The age limit has been 20 to 30 years on a date stated in the notification. There are relaxations for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen under government rules.
Candidates must be Indian citizens, or belong to certain other groups listed in the notification.
The qualification per post, age band and relaxations are set in each notification. Check them before applying.

|---|---|---|
| Role | Officer in one specialised field | General banking officer |

| Level on joining | Scale I officer in a public sector bank | |
For the PO exam in detail, see the IBPS PO guide.
How to prepare for IBPS SO
Split your time between the prelims sections and your own professional subject.
Professional knowledge first. It decides the mains. Revise your degree subjects and solve objective questions on them every day.
Banking angle. Learn how your field applies in a bank. For example, IT officers should know core banking and digital payments; agriculture officers should know crop loans and priority sector lending.
Reasoning and quant. Practise at the bank PO level. Speed matters in the prelims.
English. Even though it is qualifying, do not take it lightly. Practise reading comprehension and error spotting.
In the final months, take full mocks for both stages. For other banking exams, see the SBI PO, IBPS Clerk and RBI Grade B guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong post. You can apply for only one; check the qualification closely.
- Neglecting professional knowledge. The mains is fully about your field.
- Ignoring sectional cut-offs. One weak section in the prelims can end the attempt.
- Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
- Using an old pattern. Work only from the current notification.
