Kerala PSC LDC is the recruitment of Lower Division Clerks in Kerala government departments, held by the Kerala Public Service Commission, headquartered at Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. It is one of the largest recruitments in the state; lakhs of candidates apply in each cycle, and the posts are spread across every district.

Two things set this exam apart. First, it is a 10th-level exam, open to candidates who have passed SSLC. Second, the rank lists are prepared district by district, and each candidate competes only within the district he or she applies for.

Key takeaways
  • Kerala PSC has run a common preliminary exam for 10th-level posts, followed by a main exam for LDC.
  • Rank lists are district-wise; a candidate applies for one district.
  • All applications go through the Thulasi one-time registration profile.
  • Kerala PSC uses negative marking of one-third mark per wrong answer in objective exams - confirm in the current notification.

Exam structure at a glance

There is no interview for LDC. The district rank list is drawn from the main exam marks, and appointments are made through the advice of Kerala PSC as vacancies are reported.

The stages, number of questions, marks and duration are stated in each notification. Kerala PSC has changed the scheme before, so plan from the latest one.

Syllabus of the LDC main exam

The LDC main exam has been an objective paper covering these areas:

  • General knowledge and current affairs - history, geography and economy of India and Kerala, the Constitution and civics, and current events.
  • Renaissance in Kerala - the social reform movements and their leaders. This is one of the most scoring sections.
  • General science - physics, chemistry, biology and health.
  • Simple arithmetic and mental ability - numbers, percentage, ratio, time and work, and reasoning.
  • General English - grammar and vocabulary.
  • Regional language - Malayalam, with Tamil or Kannada for candidates from linguistic minorities.
  • Information technology - basic computer knowledge, in recent cycles.

The paper is set in Malayalam, with Tamil and Kannada versions for linguistic minority candidates. Negative marking of one-third mark per wrong answer has applied.

The section-wise marks are given in the detailed syllabus published with the notification.

District-wise rank lists

LDC is a district-level recruitment. This shapes how you apply and compete.

  • A candidate applies for one district in a cycle.
  • A separate rank list is published for each district.
  • Vacancies arising in government offices in that district are filled from that district's list.
  • A rank list remains in force for a fixed period, usually up to three years, and appointments are made as vacancies are reported.

The cut-off differs from district to district, because the number of candidates and vacancies differs. Some candidates choose a district where they expect less competition, but they must then be ready to serve there.

Reservation follows the Kerala State and Subordinate Services Rules, applied within each district list.

Who can apply

The academic requirement has been a pass in SSLC (class 10) or an equivalent examination. Candidates with higher qualifications can also apply.

Candidates must have knowledge of Malayalam. Those from linguistic minorities may be allowed to use Tamil or Kannada as the regional language, as the notification states.

The age limit is counted on a date stated in the notification, with relaxations for OBC, SC and ST candidates, ex-servicemen, persons with disabilities and other groups under Kerala rules.

Every application is made through the candidate's Thulasi one-time registration profile on the Kerala PSC website. After applying, the candidate must submit a confirmation within the given window, or the hall ticket is not issued.

Kerala PSC has not charged an application fee for its exams in recent years, which is one reason the number of applicants is so large.

The qualification, age band, relaxations and confirmation rule are set in each notification. Check them before applying.

Kerala GK and the Renaissance - what to cover

Kerala questions and the renaissance together form a large share of the paper.

  • Formation - Kerala was formed on 1 November 1956 by merging Travancore-Cochin with Malabar. The day is celebrated as Kerala Piravi.
  • Renaissance leaders - Sree Narayana Guru (SNDP Yogam, 1903), Ayyankali (Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham), Chattampi Swamikal, Vakkom Moulavi, Mannathu Padmanabhan (NSS), Pandit Karuppan and Vaikunda Swamikal.
  • Movements - the Vaikom Satyagraha (1924-25), the Guruvayur Satyagraha (1931-32), the Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936, the Channar revolt and the Malayali Memorial.
  • History - the Cheras, the arrival of Vasco da Gama at Kappad in 1498, Marthanda Varma and Travancore, Pazhassi Raja and Velu Thampi Dalawa.
  • Geography - the 14 districts, the Periyar as the longest river, Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes, Anamudi as the highest peak, Silent Valley and Periyar Tiger Reserve.
  • Culture - Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, Theyyam, Onam and Vallam Kali.

Kerala PSC often asks the year an organisation was founded or who led a movement. Keep a date-wise table of the renaissance.

How to prepare for Kerala PSC LDC

The exam rewards steady revision over many months.

Renaissance first. Make a table of leaders, organisations, years and movements. Revise it every week.

Kerala and India GK. Use the Kerala SCERT textbooks and a standard Kerala PSC guide for history, geography and civics.

Previous papers. Kerala PSC repeats question patterns. Solve LDC and other 10th-level papers of past years.

Maths and English daily. Solve a timed set of simple arithmetic and grammar every day.

Speed practice. Kerala PSC objective papers have usually given well under a minute per question, so take full-length mocks with a timer and learn to skip doubtful questions instead of guessing.

Current affairs. Follow Kerala and national news, especially schemes, awards and appointments.

For the state's higher services, see the Kerala PSC KAS guide. For similar clerk-level exams elsewhere, see the KPSC FDA, TNPSC Group 4 and RSMSSB LDC guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Missing the confirmation. Without it, the hall ticket is not issued.
  2. Treating the renaissance lightly. It is the most-asked Kerala topic.
  3. Guessing freely. One-third negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
  4. Choosing a district carelessly. You compete and serve only in that district.
  5. Using an old scheme. Kerala PSC has changed the prelims-mains pattern; work only from the current notification.
