TNPSC Group 2 is the Combined Civil Services Examination II of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), based in Chennai. One exam fills two sets of posts: Group 2 posts, which carry an interview, and Group 2A posts, which do not. Together they cover hundreds of middle-level posts across Tamil Nadu government departments, from Sub-Registrar and Deputy Commercial Tax Officer to Assistant and Junior Co-operative Auditor.
The exam has a Tamil eligibility requirement that every candidate must clear, and it gives heavy weight to Tamil Nadu's history, culture, development model and administration. These two features set it apart from most state exams.
- Stages: a common objective prelims, a mains, and an interview only for Group 2 posts.
- The mains has included a qualifying Tamil eligibility paper and a General Studies paper.
- Group 2 = interview posts; Group 2A = non-interview posts selected on written marks.
- The scheme, marks, age band and post list are fixed in each TNPSC notification - confirm them there.
Group 2 and Group 2A - the difference
The two groups share the same prelims, but the path after that differs.
| Point | Group 2 | Group 2A |
|---|---|---|
| Interview | Yes | No |
| Posts have included | Sub-Registrar Grade II, Municipal Commissioner Grade II, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Probation Officer, Assistant Section Officer and other interview posts | Assistant in various departments, Personal Clerk, Junior Co-operative Auditor, Revenue Assistant and other non-interview posts |
| Final merit | Mains plus interview | Mains only |
A candidate can usually apply for both groups in the same application and choose posts later in counselling. The exact post list, vacancies and groupings are given in each notification. Read it fully before applying.
The preliminary exam
The prelims is a single objective paper common to both groups. It has been built around two parts:
- General Studies at the degree standard - general science, current events, geography of India, history and culture of India and Tamil Nadu, Indian polity, the Indian economy, the national movement, and the history, culture, heritage and socio-political movements of Tamil Nadu.
- Aptitude and mental ability at the SSLC standard - simplification, percentage, ratio, interest, area, volume, time and work, logical reasoning and number series.
The paper can be taken in Tamil or English. The prelims is a screening test; its marks are not carried into the final merit. TNPSC calls a fixed multiple of the vacancies to the mains.
TNPSC has not used negative marking in its objective exams in recent years, but this is fixed in each notification, so check before you guess. The number of questions, marks and duration are stated in the current notification.

The main exam and interview
The mains has been reorganised more than once. In recent cycles it has included:
- Paper I - Tamil Eligibility Test: a qualifying paper of the SSLC standard covering translation, precis, comprehension, letter writing and essay in Tamil. A candidate must reach the minimum mark; the marks are not added to the merit.
- Paper II - General Studies: the merit paper. For Group 2 posts it has been descriptive, testing answer writing on history, polity, economy, Tamil Nadu's development and administration, and current affairs.
Group 2A candidates have been selected on the basis of the mains merit, and Group 2 candidates go on to an interview, whose marks are added to the mains marks.
Since the scheme has changed between notifications, download the current syllabus and check the nature of Paper II, marks, duration and the Tamil qualifying mark before you plan.
Who can apply
The academic requirement has been a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. A few posts have asked for a specific degree, such as law for Probation Officer or commerce for certain audit posts.
Candidates must have adequate knowledge of Tamil. This is tested through the Tamil eligibility paper in the mains.
The age limit is counted on a date stated in the notification. Tamil Nadu has given wide relaxations - for some reserved categories there has been no upper age limit for certain posts - so read the age table for your category carefully.
Reservation benefits apply to candidates belonging to the reserved communities of Tamil Nadu, and preference is given to candidates who studied in Tamil medium under the state's PSTM rules.
The qualification per post, age band, relaxations and vacancies are set in each notification. Check them before applying.
Tamil Nadu GK - what to cover
Tamil Nadu questions form a large share of both the prelims and the mains. Treat the state as a subject in itself.
- Formation - the present boundaries took shape on 1 November 1956. Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu with effect from 14 January 1969. Chennai is the capital.
- Ancient and medieval history - the Sangam age and its literature, the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, the Pallavas of Kanchipuram, the imperial Cholas under Rajaraja I and Rajendra I, the Nayaks of Madurai and Thanjavur.
- Heritage - the Great Living Chola Temples including the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur, the monuments of Mahabalipuram, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- Socio-political movements - the Justice Party (1916), the Self-Respect Movement of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy (1925), the Vaikom satyagraha, the anti-Hindi agitations, and the Dravidian movement.
- Freedom struggle - Puli Thevar, Velu Nachiyar, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, the Vellore mutiny of 1806, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, Subramania Bharati, and the Vedaranyam salt satyagraha of 1930 led by C. Rajagopalachari.
- Literature and culture - the Thirukkural of Thiruvalluvar, Silappatikaram and Manimekalai, Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music, Pongal and Jallikattu.
- Geography - the Kaveri delta, the Western and Eastern Ghats, Doddabetta in the Nilgiris as the highest peak, the Coromandel coast, the Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve and the north-east monsoon.
- Development and administration - Tamil Nadu's welfare model, the noon-meal scheme, industrial clusters, the state budget and schemes, the Madras High Court and local bodies.
Scheme names and administrative details are revised from time to time. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.
How to prepare for TNPSC Group 2
One plan serves both stages, because the prelims and mains share most of the syllabus.
Samacheer Kalvi books first. The Tamil Nadu State Board books from class 6 to 12 are the standard base for TNPSC, especially for history, Tamil Nadu GK and science.
Tamil Nadu as its own subject. Keep a separate notebook for the Sangam age, the Cholas, the Dravidian movement, Tamil literature and state schemes. Revise it weekly.
Aptitude every day. Solve a timed set of SSLC-level maths and reasoning daily.
Tamil writing. Practise translation, precis and essay in Tamil every week for the qualifying paper.
Answer writing. If you are aiming for Group 2 posts, start descriptive answer practice by month two.
In the final months, solve previous TNPSC papers and full mocks under exam timing. For the clerk-level exam, see the TNPSC Group 4 guide; for nearby states, see the KPSC KAS and Kerala PSC KAS guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Taking the Tamil paper lightly. Failing it cancels your General Studies score.
- Skipping Samacheer books. Many questions come straight from them.
- Ignoring aptitude. It is the most scoring part of the prelims.
- Not practising answer writing. Group 2 mains needs descriptive skill.
- Using an old scheme. TNPSC has changed the pattern more than once; work only from the current notification.
