KPSC FDA is the recruitment of First Division Assistants - the senior clerical cadre of the Karnataka government - held by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), based at Udyoga Soudha, Bengaluru. FDAs handle files, accounts and office work in state departments and are a step above Second Division Assistants (SDA). The same commission also recruits SDAs through a similar exam.
The exam is short and objective, but it has two filters that many outsiders miss: a compulsory Kannada language requirement, and a computer literacy test that must be passed after selection. Its General Knowledge paper also leans heavily on Karnataka.
- A written competitive exam with two objective papers - general knowledge, and languages with computer knowledge.
- Candidates who did not study Kannada must clear a compulsory Kannada language test.
- Posts in the Kalyana Karnataka region are filled under the Article 371J local cadre rules.
- Marks, the negative marking rule, age band and vacancies are fixed in each KPSC notification - confirm them there.
Exam structure at a glance
Selection rests on the written exam, with qualifying conditions around it.
| Stage | Nature | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Kannada language test | Qualifying, for those who did not study Kannada as a language | Proves knowledge of Kannada |
| Competitive exam | Two objective papers | Decides the merit |
| Document verification | Certificate check | Final step before the selection list |
| Computer literacy test | After appointment, within the probation period | Needed to complete probation |
There is no interview for FDA. The merit is drawn from the two papers of the competitive exam.
The exact papers, marks, duration and negative marking are printed in each notification. Plan from the latest one.
The two papers
The competitive exam has had two objective papers of equal marks.
Paper I - General Knowledge has covered:
- Current events of national and international importance, and of Karnataka
- History, culture and geography of India and Karnataka
- Indian Constitution and polity, and the economy
- General science and everyday science
- Mental ability, reasoning and basic arithmetic
Paper II - Languages and computer knowledge has covered:
- General Kannada - grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage
- General English - grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage
- Computer knowledge - basics of hardware, software, MS Office and the internet, in recent cycles
Negative marking has applied in KPSC objective exams, usually a quarter of the mark for a question per wrong answer. Both papers count equally, so weak Kannada or English costs as much as weak GK.

Kannada test and computer literacy
Compulsory Kannada test. Candidates who have not passed Kannada as a first or second language in SSLC or an equivalent exam must clear a compulsory Kannada language test conducted by KPSC. It is qualifying; its marks are not added to the merit, but failing it makes the candidate ineligible.
Computer literacy. Under the Karnataka Civil Services (Computer Literacy) rules, a newly appointed FDA must pass a computer literacy test within the probation period. Without it, the probation is not declared complete and increments can be held up.
The exact rules for exemption, the test syllabus and the time allowed are given in the notification and the service rules. Check them early, and if you did not study Kannada in school, start preparing for the Kannada test at once.
Who can apply
The academic requirement has been a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the state.
The age limit is counted on a date stated in the notification, with relaxations for reserved categories, women in some cases, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen under Karnataka rules.
Reservation applies to candidates belonging to the reserved categories of Karnataka, including the state's horizontal reservation for women, rural candidates and Kannada-medium candidates.
Kalyana Karnataka (Article 371J). The districts of the former Hyderabad-Karnataka region - Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari and Vijayanagara - have special provisions under Article 371J. Posts in this local cadre are reserved for candidates holding a local residence certificate, and they also get a share of state-level posts.
The qualification, age band, relaxations, 371J rules and vacancies are set in each notification. Check them before applying.
Karnataka GK - what to cover
Karnataka questions form a large part of Paper I. Treat the state as a subject in itself.
- Formation - the Kannada-speaking regions were unified as Mysore State on 1 November 1956. It was renamed Karnataka on 1 November 1973. 1 November is celebrated as Karnataka Rajyotsava. Bengaluru is the capital.
- Dynasties - the Kadambas of Banavasi, the Gangas, the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas of Belur and Halebidu, the Vijayanagara empire, the Wodeyars of Mysore, and Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
- Heritage - Hampi, Pattadakal and the Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola.
- Reformers and freedom fighters - Basavanna and the Vachana movement, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Sangolli Rayanna, and the unification (Ekikarana) movement.
- Geography - the Kaveri, Krishna, Tungabhadra and Sharavathi rivers, Jog Falls, Mullayanagiri as the highest peak, the Western Ghats, the coastal belt and the Deccan plateau.
- Wildlife - Bandipur, Nagarhole, Bhadra and Dandeli-Anshi tiger reserves.
- Literature and culture - Kannada has won the Jnanpith Award many times, with writers such as Kuvempu and D. R. Bendre; Yakshagana, the Mysuru Dasara, Carnatic music and Mysore painting.
- Economy and administration - Bengaluru's IT industry, coffee and silk, the state budget and schemes, the Karnataka High Court and the Vidhana Soudha.
District counts and scheme names have changed in recent years. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.
How to prepare for KPSC FDA
Give both papers equal time, and handle the language and computer requirements early.
Karnataka GK first. Use a standard Karnataka GK book and keep a notebook of dynasties, rivers, parks, Jnanpith winners and schemes.
General studies. NCERT books for history, geography, polity, economy and science, plus a standard reasoning and arithmetic book at the clerk level.
Kannada and English. Work through grammar topic by topic and solve previous papers for both. If you did not study Kannada in school, prepare for the compulsory Kannada test at once.
Computer basics. Learn MS Office, internet and file basics; they help in Paper II and in the computer literacy test.
Current affairs. Follow national news and Karnataka news together, especially schemes and the state budget.
In the final months, solve previous KPSC FDA and SDA papers and full mocks under exam timing. For the state civil services, see the KPSC KAS guide; for similar clerk-level exams, see the RSMSSB LDC and SSC CHSL guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring the Kannada rule. Without Kannada in SSLC, the language test is compulsory.
- Treating Paper II lightly. Kannada, English and computers carry half the marks.
- Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
- Missing the 371J certificate. Kalyana Karnataka candidates need the right certificate to claim local cadre posts.
- Forgetting the computer literacy test. It must be passed during probation.
