UKSSSC Group C is the family of recruitment exams held by the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UKSSSC), based in Dehradun, for Group C posts in the state government. The best known is the graduate-level combined exam that fills posts such as Gram Panchayat Vikas Adhikari (VDO), Junior Assistant and supervisor posts in one go. Separate Group C exams are held for Patwari and Lekhpal, Forest Guard, police and other posts.
The exam is a single objective paper, which makes it look simple. The competition, however, is intense, and the margin is decided by Uttarakhand GK - the state's history, geography, culture and movements - and by general Hindi, which carries a large share of the paper.
- One objective written paper; some posts add a typing or skill test.
- The paper has covered general Hindi, general knowledge and general studies, with heavy weight on Uttarakhand.
- Posts have included VDO, Junior Assistant, supervisor and clerical posts across departments.
- The number of questions, marks, age band and post list are fixed in each UKSSSC advertisement - confirm them there.
Which exams come under UKSSSC Group C
UKSSSC fills Group C posts through several exams. The main ones aspirants prepare for are:
| Exam | Posts have included | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate-level combined exam | Gram Panchayat Vikas Adhikari (VDO), Gram Vikas Adhikari, Junior Assistant, supervisor posts in women and child development, cooperative and other departments | Graduation |
| Senior secondary-level exam | Patwari and Lekhpal (revenue), forest guard, clerical and assistant posts | 12th or graduation as the post needs |
| Post-specific exams | Police constable, LT teachers, technical and departmental posts | As the post needs |
This page covers the graduate-level combined exam pattern, which is the one most candidates mean by "UKSSSC Group C". The other exams follow a similar single-paper design with their own syllabus weights.
The exact post list and vacancies are set in each advertisement. Read it fully before applying.
Exam pattern - one objective paper
The written exam has been a single objective paper of multiple-choice questions, held offline or online as the advertisement states.
- The paper has carried 100 questions for 100 marks in recent cycles, with a duration of two hours.
- Negative marking has applied, usually a quarter of a mark per wrong answer.
- The paper is set in Hindi and English, with the Hindi language section only in Hindi.
The syllabus has been built around three blocks:
- General Hindi - grammar, sandhi, samas, paryayvachi, vilom, muhavare, shabd shuddhi, vakya shuddhi and comprehension. This block has carried a large share of the paper.
- General knowledge and general studies - Indian history, polity, geography, economy, general science, current affairs, reasoning and basic mathematics.
- Uttarakhand GK - the state's history, geography, culture, movements, economy and administration.
For posts such as Junior Assistant, a typing test on computer in Hindi and English has followed the written exam as a qualifying step.
The number of questions, marks, duration, penalty and section weights are stated in the current advertisement. Check them before you plan mocks.

Who can apply
The academic requirement depends on the post. The graduate-level combined exam has needed a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. For some posts, a computer certificate such as CCC from NIELIT or a diploma has been required.
The age limit is counted on a date stated in the advertisement, with relaxations for reserved categories, women and other groups under Uttarakhand rules.
Uttarakhand gives reservation and preference to its own residents. Reservation benefits apply to candidates with a permanent residence certificate of Uttarakhand. Candidates from other states have been allowed only in the general category, where the advertisement permits.
Candidates have been required to have knowledge of Hindi and, for some posts, to have passed Hindi up to a prescribed class.
The qualification per post, domicile rule, age band and relaxations are set in each advertisement. Check them before applying.
Uttarakhand GK - what to cover
Uttarakhand questions decide the cut-off. Treat the state as a subject in itself.
- Formation - Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000 under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000, as the 27th state. It was called Uttaranchal until 2007. Dehradun is the winter capital and Gairsain was declared the summer capital in 2020.
- The statehood movement - the demand for a separate hill state, the agitation of 1994, the Rampur Tiraha incident, and the role of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal.
- History - the Katyuri dynasty, the Chand rulers of Kumaon, the Parmar rulers of Garhwal, the Gorkha rule, the Treaty of Sugauli (1816) and the British period.
- Movements - the Chipko movement of 1973 with Sundarlal Bahuguna, Chandi Prasad Bhatt and Gaura Devi, the Kuli Begar movement and the anti-liquor movement.
- Geography - the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions and the 13 districts, Nanda Devi as the highest peak, the sources of the Ganga at Gaumukh and the Yamuna at Yamunotri, the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, the Panch Prayag, the Tehri dam and the glaciers.
- Heritage - the Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jim Corbett, India's first national park (1936), the Char Dham of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, and Rajaji National Park.
- Culture - the Kumaoni and Garhwali languages, Chholiya and Langvir dances, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat yatra, Aipan art and the fairs of Jauljibi and Uttarayani.
- Economy and administration - tourism, hydropower, horticulture, the Uttarakhand High Court at Nainital, the Vidhan Sabha and the state budget and schemes.
Scheme names and administrative details are revised from time to time. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.
How to prepare for UKSSSC Group C
Three blocks, one paper. Give each block a fixed slot in the week.
Uttarakhand GK first. Use a standard state GK book and keep a notebook of dynasties, movements, rivers, peaks, dances and districts. Revise it weekly.
General Hindi daily. This block carries a large share of marks. Work through grammar topic by topic and solve previous papers.
General studies. NCERT books for history, geography, polity, economy and science, plus a standard reasoning and maths book at the clerk level.
Current affairs. Follow national news and Uttarakhand news together, especially the state budget, schemes and awards.
Typing practice. If your post carries a typing test, practise Hindi and English typing on a computer from the start.
In the final months, solve previous UKSSSC papers and full mocks under exam timing. For the state civil services, see the UKPSC PCS guide; for similar exams in nearby states, see the UPSSSC VDO and HSSC CET guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Uttarakhand GK as an afterthought. It is where the cut-off is decided.
- Underestimating Hindi. The general Hindi block carries a large share of the paper.
- Applying without the domicile certificate. Reservation and preference depend on it.
- Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
- Using an old pattern. UKSSSC changes the scheme between advertisements; work only from the current one.
