UPSSSC PET is not a recruitment exam. Clearing it gets you no post at all — what it gets you is the right to apply when any UPSSSC Group C recruitment is notified. Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, VDO, Forest Guard and the rest all sit behind this one gate, and a candidate without a valid PET score cannot submit an application however well prepared they are. The paper itself has an unusual shape too: 30 of its 100 questions are passage, graph and table interpretation rather than direct recall. This guide covers the pattern, the score rules and how to prepare.
Key Points (Quick Revision)
- Conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission as a common gateway for its Group C recruitments.
- Paper: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, objective.
- Negative marking of one-fourth of a mark per wrong answer.
- 30 marks come from Hindi passages, graphs and tables — not from static GK.
- There is no pass or fail — everyone gets a score, and each recruitment sets its own cut-off.
Why the PET exists and what it actually gives you
Before this system, every UPSSSC recruitment ran its own preliminary stage, which meant the same lakhs of candidates wrote the same kind of paper several times a year and the Commission processed the same crowd repeatedly. The Preliminary Eligibility Test replaced all of those with one common screening.
The practical effect is a two-step process. You write the PET once, receive a score card, and that score becomes your ticket. When a recruitment such as Lekhpal or Junior Assistant is notified, only PET-scored candidates may apply, and the Commission shortlists from that pool for the recruitment's own main examination.
Two consequences follow, and both are missed by first-time candidates. First, there is no pass or fail in the PET — everybody who writes it gets a score and a score card. What decides whether you get called is the cut-off that each individual recruitment sets, which depends on its vacancies and its applicant pool. A score that is comfortable for one recruitment may be short for another in the same year.
Second, because the score follows you into every recruitment you apply for, treating the PET as a formality is the most expensive mistake in this process. A weak score does not just cost you one exam; it quietly closes several.
The score card carries a validity period, and the Commission has revised that period since the system began. Check the rule stated in the current PET notification rather than assuming what applied to an earlier cycle.
The paper — 100 questions across fifteen areas
The PET is a two-hour objective paper of 100 questions worth one mark each, with one-fourth of a mark deducted per wrong answer. What makes it unusual is how widely the questions are spread.
| Area | Questions |
|---|---|
| Indian History | 5 |
| Indian National Movement | 5 |
| Geography | 5 |
| Indian Economy | 5 |
| Indian Constitution and Public Administration | 5 |
| General Science | 5 |
| Elementary Arithmetic | 5 |
| General Hindi | 5 |
| General English | 5 |
| Logic and Reasoning | 5 |
| Current Affairs | 10 |
| General Awareness | 10 |
| Hindi passages — analysis and interpretation (2 passages) | 10 |
| Graph interpretation (2 graphs) | 10 |
| Table interpretation and analysis (2 tables) | 10 |
Read the last three rows together. Thirty marks — nearly a third of the paper — are not recall questions at all. They are comprehension and data-reading questions where the information is given to you and the marks depend on reading it correctly under time pressure. No amount of GK revision helps here; only practice does.
The other pattern worth noticing is that ten subjects carry only five questions each. That rewards breadth over depth: a candidate who knows the basics of all ten scores better than one who has mastered three and ignored the rest.
Confirm the exact distribution and the negative marking from the current notification, since the Commission has adjusted the structure since the PET was introduced.

Eligibility and which recruitments it unlocks
The educational qualification for writing the PET itself is a Class 10 pass from a recognised board. That is deliberately low, because the PET is only a gate — the actual qualification requirement belongs to each recruitment behind it. A graduate-level post still needs a degree at the main stage; the PET simply lets you reach that stage.
The age band is generally 18 to 40 years as on the cut-off date, with relaxations for reserved categories under Uttar Pradesh state rules. Both the age limits and the relaxations have been revised between cycles, so read the age clause of the current notification.
The recruitments that sit behind the PET cover most of the Commission's Group C hiring. The commonly written ones include Rajaswa Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, Village Development Officer, Forest Guard and Wildlife Guard, Stenographer, Assistant Accountant and Auditor, and X-ray Technician, among others. Each has its own eligibility, its own main examination and its own cut-off from the PET pool.
Candidates targeting UP Lekhpal in particular should note that the Lekhpal main paper draws heavily on the same base the PET tests, plus a Village Society and Development section that the PET does not cover. Preparing the PET properly therefore does most of the Lekhpal groundwork as well.
How to prepare for a broad, shallow paper
The PET rewards a different approach from a deep single-subject exam. Ten subjects at five questions each means the goal is competence across all of them rather than mastery of a few.
Start with the static base and keep it at the level the paper actually asks. NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to 10 in history, geography, polity, economy and science cover the fifty marks those subjects carry between them. Going deeper than that returns very little here, because a subject worth five marks cannot repay ten hours a week.
Give current affairs and general awareness their due, since together they carry twenty marks — the largest single block after the interpretation questions. Keep current affairs to the last six months, with a distinct Uttar Pradesh layer covering state schemes, appointments and developments, because the Commission asks them.
Now the part most candidates leave out: practise the thirty marks of passages, graphs and tables from the first month. Read two Hindi passages and answer five questions on each, then work through a bar chart and a table, every single day. This block is the most winnable in the paper because the answers are printed in front of you, and it is the block where unprepared candidates lose the most time.
General Hindi and General English are five marks each and school-level — grammar, error correction, synonyms and antonyms. Short regular sessions work better than a final-month push.
For Elementary Arithmetic and Reasoning, daily timed practice on a fixed topic list beats fresh theory. Accuracy first because of the negative marking, then speed.
Finally, write full papers under the two-hour clock. The PET is as much a time-management test as a knowledge test, and candidates who have never paced the interpretation sets run out of time on exactly the questions they could have answered. Candidates also writing UP Police Constable share most of this base. For a structured General Studies foundation, see the Crazy GkTrick course catalogue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UPSSSC PET a recruitment exam?
No. The PET is a common eligibility screening — clearing it gives you no post. It gives you a score card that lets you apply when a UPSSSC Group C recruitment such as Lekhpal, Junior Assistant or VDO is notified, after which that recruitment runs its own main examination.
Is there a pass or fail in UPSSSC PET?
No. Everyone who writes the exam receives a score. Each recruitment then sets its own cut-off from the PET pool depending on its vacancies and applicants, so a score that suffices for one recruitment may fall short for another in the same year.
What is the UPSSSC PET exam pattern?
A two-hour objective paper of 100 questions worth 100 marks with one-fourth negative marking. It spreads across fifteen areas, with ten subjects carrying five questions each, current affairs and general awareness carrying ten each, and thirty marks from Hindi passages, graph interpretation and table analysis.
How long is the UPSSSC PET score valid?
The score card carries a defined validity period, and the Commission has revised that period since the system was introduced. Check the rule stated in the current PET notification rather than relying on what applied to an earlier cycle.
What is the eligibility for UPSSSC PET?
A Class 10 pass from a recognised board is enough to write the PET itself, with an age band generally of 18 to 40 years and relaxations under state rules. The actual qualification for a post — such as a degree for graduate-level recruitments — is checked at the main stage of that recruitment.
