PPSC PCS is the Punjab State Civil Services Combined Competitive Examination held by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), headquartered in Patiala. It fills the state's senior administrative posts, including the Punjab Civil Service (Executive Branch), Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tehsildar and allied services. For aspirants in Punjab it is the state's counterpart of the UPSC Civil Services.
The exam follows the familiar prelims-mains-interview design. Two things make it Punjab's own: a firm Punjabi language requirement, and the weight given to Punjab's history, geography, culture and economy - from the Sikh Gurus and Maharaja Ranjit Singh to the Green Revolution.
- Three stages: an objective preliminary exam, a descriptive main exam and an interview.
- The prelims has had a General Studies paper and a qualifying CSAT paper.
- Candidates must have passed Punjabi at matriculation level or an equivalent test.
- Marks, papers, the age band and the post list are fixed in each PPSC notification - confirm them there.
Exam structure at a glance
Every candidate goes through the same three steps.
| Stage | Nature | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary exam | Two objective papers - General Studies and CSAT | Screening; short-lists candidates for the mains |
| Main exam | Descriptive papers - language, essay and General Studies | Main contributor to the final merit |
| Interview | Personality test | Adds to mains marks for the final list |
The prelims only opens the gate. Its marks are not counted in the final merit. PPSC calls a fixed multiple of the vacancies, category by category, to write the mains.
The final merit list is drawn from the mains and interview marks. Your rank and the order of posts you choose decide your service.
The number of questions, marks, duration, negative marking and short-listing ratio are printed in each notification. They have been revised in the past, so plan from the latest one.
The preliminary exam
The prelims has been made up of two objective papers held on the same day:
- Paper I - General Studies: history of India and Punjab, the national movement, geography of India and Punjab, the Constitution and polity, the economy, general science, environment, and current affairs of national and state importance.
- Paper II - Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT): comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision making, basic numeracy and data interpretation.
The CSAT paper has been qualifying, with a minimum percentage fixed by PPSC. Only the General Studies paper has decided the prelims merit, which raises the bar for accuracy in it.
Negative marking has applied. The exact number of questions, marks, the CSAT qualifying mark and the penalty are stated in the current notification. Check them before you plan mocks.

The main exam and interview
The mains is written and descriptive. Its structure has included:
| Paper | Subject |
|---|---|
| English | Language and composition |
| Punjabi | Language and composition in Gurmukhi script |
| Essay | Essays in English or Punjabi on social, economic, administrative and current themes |
| General Studies I to IV | History, geography and society of India and Punjab; polity and governance; economy, science and technology, environment and security; ethics, integrity and aptitude |
Whether the language papers count in the merit or are only qualifying has varied between notifications, so check the current scheme.
The interview follows the mains. Its marks are added to the mains marks for the final merit.
Two habits pay the most in the mains: regular answer writing under a timer, and adding a Punjab example wherever a question allows it.
The exact papers, marks, word limits and medium options are set by PPSC. Download the current syllabus before you begin.

Punjab GK - what to cover
Punjab questions run through the prelims, fill large parts of the mains and are common in the interview. Treat the state as a subject in itself.
- Formation - the present state of Punjab was formed on 1 November 1966 under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, when Haryana was carved out and hill areas went to Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh, a Union Territory, is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana.
- History - the Harappan site of Ropar, the ten Sikh Gurus from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh, the founding of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699, Banda Singh Bahadur, the misls, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the Sikh empire, the Anglo-Sikh wars and annexation in 1849.
- Freedom struggle - the Kuka movement, the Ghadar Party, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, the Gurdwara reform movement, and Bhagat Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh.
- Geography - the land of five rivers, now drained by the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi; the Shivalik foothills, the Doabas, the Bhakra Nangal dam, and wetlands such as Harike and Kanjli.
- Economy - the Green Revolution, wheat and paddy, canal irrigation, the groundwater challenge, Ludhiana's industry and the state budget and schemes.
- Culture - Bhangra and Giddha, Punjabi literature from Waris Shah to Amrita Pritam, festivals such as Lohri, Baisakhi and Hola Mohalla, Phulkari embroidery, and the Golden Temple at Amritsar.
- Administration - the Vidhan Sabha, the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh, the districts and the panchayat system.
District counts, scheme names and administrative details are revised from time to time. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.
How to prepare for PPSC PCS
One plan for all three stages works best, because the prelims and mains share most of the syllabus.
Foundation first. NCERT books for history, geography, polity, economy and science build the base for every paper.
Punjab as its own subject. Keep a separate notebook for the Sikh Gurus, Ranjit Singh, the freedom struggle, geography, economy and schemes, and revise it every week.
Daily current affairs. Follow national news and Punjab news together. The state budget, schemes and events are frequent question sources.
Answer writing from month two. Write two or three answers a day and one essay a week.
Punjabi and English. Practise composition, precis and translation in both languages every week.
CSAT practice. Do not ignore the qualifying paper. Solve a timed set every alternate day.
In the final months, solve previous PPSC papers and full mocks under exam timing. For nearby state services, see the HPSC HCS, HPPSC HAS and JKPSC CCE guides, and the UPSC CSE guide for the national exam.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying without the Punjabi qualification. Check the rule before you fill the form.
- Ignoring CSAT because it is qualifying. Failing it cancels your General Studies score.
- Treating Punjab GK as an afterthought. It is where many marks are won or lost.
- Waiting too long to write answers. Mains writing speed builds slowly.
- Using an old scheme. PPSC has revised its pattern before; work only from the current notification.
