RPSC RAS is the Rajasthan State and Subordinate Services Combined Competitive Examination, conducted by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC), Ajmer. It is the state's top civil services exam. Through it, the commission fills posts in the Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS), the Rajasthan Police Service, the Rajasthan Tehsildar Service and a long list of other state and subordinate services.
Think of RAS as Rajasthan's version of the UPSC civil services exam - with one big difference. Rajasthan itself is a major subject. Its history, art, culture, geography, economy and administration appear in the prelims, in several mains papers and again in the interview. A candidate who is strong in general studies but weak on Rajasthan will struggle.

The three stages of RAS
RAS selection runs in three stages. Each tests something different, so each needs a different kind of preparation.

The prelims works as a filter. The commission calls only a limited multiple of the vacancies, category-wise, to the mains. So you need a score comfortably above the cut-off, not just a pass.
The final merit list is made from mains plus interview marks. Your service and posting then depend on your rank and the preferences you fill.

Prelims - a wide GK paper with a Rajasthan core
The prelims is a single objective paper on General Knowledge and General Science. It is wide rather than deep. The areas it has covered include:
- History, art, culture, literature, tradition and heritage of Rajasthan
- Indian history - ancient, medieval and modern, including the freedom struggle
- Geography - world, India and Rajasthan
- Indian constitution, political system and governance, with Rajasthan's political and administrative system
- Economic concepts and Indian economy, with the economy of Rajasthan
- Science and technology
- Reasoning and mental ability, and basic numeracy
- Current affairs - Rajasthan, national and international
Rajasthan appears in almost every line of this list. That is the pattern to understand early. You are not studying "GK plus some Rajasthan"; you are studying each subject twice - once at the India level and once for Rajasthan.
RPSC papers have also used an extra option to mark if you are not attempting a question, with penalties for leaving too many questions completely blank. The exact rule and the negative marking are printed in the notification and on the paper - practise them in mocks.

Mains - four descriptive papers
The mains is where RAS is really decided. It is a written, descriptive exam - you write answers of fixed word limits, not tick options. It has had four papers:
- Paper I - built around history (with Rajasthan's history, art and culture), economics and sociology or management-type topics.
- Paper II - built around general science and technology, reasoning and mental ability, and related areas.
- Paper III - built around Indian polity, public administration, and current and international affairs.
- Paper IV - General Hindi and General English, including grammar, translation and writing.
Two things matter more than people expect. First, answer writing. Knowing a topic is not the same as writing a clear 50-word or 100-word answer under time pressure. Second, Paper IV. It is language, not GS, and many candidates neglect it - but its marks count fully in the merit.

Eligibility and the services you can get
The basic requirement has been a graduation degree from a recognised university. Final-year students have generally been allowed to apply, with the degree needed by a date the notification fixes. Candidates also need working knowledge of Hindi in Devanagari script and of Rajasthani culture.
The age limit is counted from a cut-off date given in the notification, with relaxations for reserved categories and some other groups. Reservation and most relaxations apply to bona fide residents of Rajasthan. Candidates from other states have generally been able to apply in the general category.
A single RAS exam fills many services. The best-known are the Rajasthan Administrative Service, the Rajasthan Police Service, and the Rajasthan Tehsildar Service. There are also accounts, cooperative, commercial tax and other allied services. Top ranks usually choose RAS or RPS.

A preparation plan for RAS
RAS rewards a plan that treats prelims and mains as one preparation, not two.
Build Rajasthan GK as a separate pillar. Keep one set of notes for Rajasthan history, art and culture, one for geography and economy, and one for polity and administration. Revise them every week. This single pillar serves the prelims, the mains and the interview.
Use NCERTs for the India-level base. History, geography, polity, economy and science at NCERT depth cover most of the prelims and give you the base for mains answers.
Start answer writing early. From the second or third month, write a few mains-style answers every day and check them against the word limit. Descriptive skill takes months to build.
Give Paper IV a fixed slot. Practise Hindi and English grammar, translation and short writing weekly. These are steady marks.
