Rajasthan CET is the Common Eligibility Test for many Group C recruitments of the Rajasthan government. It is conducted by the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB), the body earlier known as RSMSSB. Lakhs of candidates take it, which makes it one of the largest exams in the state.
The key point is simple: CET is not a job exam by itself. It does not give you a post. It gives you a score, and that score decides whether you can apply for - and get shortlisted in - the separate main exams for posts such as Patwari and Gram Vikas Adhikari. Miss the CET, and you miss every recruitment that depends on it.
- CET is held at two levels - Graduation level and Senior Secondary (Class 12) level.
- It is a qualifying and shortlisting test; each post then has its own main exam.
- Rajasthan GK - history, art, culture and geography - is the heaviest and most scoring area.
- Score validity, minimum qualifying marks and the post list are set by the current rules and notification.
How the CET system works
Before CET, each Rajasthan recruitment ran its own full exam, and the same candidates sat many similar papers. The CET system changed this. Now candidates take one common test, and later recruitments shortlist from among those who clear it.
The flow for most posts is:
- CET - you take the test at the level your qualification allows and get a score.
- Qualifying marks - you must reach the minimum percentage set by the rules. Reserved categories have had a lower minimum.
- Post-wise application - when a recruitment is advertised, CET-qualified candidates apply for it.
- Shortlisting - the board calls a limited multiple of the vacancies, in order of CET score, to the main exam.
- Main exam - a separate paper for that post, and then document verification or other stages as the post requires.
So your CET score works twice: first to qualify, and then to decide your rank for shortlisting. A score just above the minimum may not be enough when a post draws a very large number of applicants.
The validity of the CET score was one year when the system started and has since been changed. The minimum qualifying marks, the validity period and the shortlisting multiple are all set by the current rules - confirm them from the latest RSSB notification.
Graduate level vs Senior Secondary level
CET is held in two separate levels. You take the one that matches the posts you want - and many candidates take both.
| Point | Graduation level CET | Senior Secondary level CET |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum education | Graduation | Class 12 (Senior Secondary) |
| Posts it has fed | Posts such as Patwari, Gram Vikas Adhikari (VDO) and Junior Accountant | Posts such as Junior Assistant (LDC) and Forest Guard |
| Paper standard | Graduation standard | Class 12 standard |
| Common core | Rajasthan GK, general studies, reasoning, mathematics, Hindi, English, computer basics, current affairs | |
A graduate can generally sit both levels, and doing so keeps more posts open. A candidate with only Class 12 can take the Senior Secondary level.
The list of posts linked to each level changes over time as the government adds or removes posts. Before planning your year around one post, check which CET level that post accepts in the current rules.

The syllabus - Rajasthan GK is the core
The CET paper is objective and covers a wide spread of subjects. The areas it has drawn on include:
- Rajasthan history, art, culture, literature, traditions and heritage - forts, folk deities, fairs, folk music and dance, paintings, handicrafts and dialects
- Geography of Rajasthan - physical regions, rivers, lakes, climate, soils, minerals, wildlife sanctuaries and agriculture
- Indian and world geography and Indian polity
- Economic concepts and Indian economy
- General science
- Reasoning and mental ability, and basic mathematics
- Hindi and English - grammar and usage
- Computer basics
- Current affairs, with Rajasthan events and schemes
Rajasthan GK takes the largest share and is the area where serious candidates separate from the rest. A general India-level GK book will not cover it. You need state-specific material and a lot of revision.
Also note the RSSB answer rules. Its papers have used a rule where each question carries an extra option to mark if you are not attempting it, and leaving too many questions fully blank has led to penalties. RSSB exams have also had negative marking. The exact number of questions, marks, duration, negative marking and blank-answer rule are printed in the current notification and on the question paper - read them carefully.
A preparation plan for CET
Because the CET score decides both qualification and shortlisting, the goal is not just to pass. The goal is a high score.
Start with Rajasthan GK. Split it into history, art and culture, and geography. Make short notes for each district - forts, fairs, temples, rivers and minerals. Revise these notes every week. This section rewards repetition more than anything else.
Build general studies next. Indian polity, economy, general science and world geography are asked at a basic level. NCERT-level clarity is enough for most questions.
Practise reasoning and mathematics daily. Even 30 to 40 timed questions a day builds speed. These sections are scoring for candidates who practise.
Do not skip Hindi, English and computer. They are short sections, but each correct answer adds to the score that decides your rank.
Follow Rajasthan current affairs - state schemes, budget announcements, awards and events - for the months before the exam.
In the last two months, solve previous CET papers and full-length mocks. Practise the blank-answer rule in every mock so it becomes a habit and not a surprise on exam day.
After CET - the post-wise main exam
Clearing CET is the first half of the journey. When a recruitment linked to your level is advertised, you apply for it separately and, if shortlisted, sit its main exam.
The main exams differ by post. The Patwari main exam, for example, adds topics related to land records and revenue work. The VDO main exam leans towards rural development and panchayati raj. Clerical posts can add a typing or computer skill test.
This is why a good CET base helps later. Much of the main exam syllabus - Rajasthan GK, general studies, Hindi and reasoning - overlaps with CET. The post-specific part can then be added on top once you know which post you are aiming for.
See our Rajasthan Patwari exam guide for one of the largest CET-linked recruitments. For other Rajasthan exams, look at the Rajasthan Police Constable and REET pages - those have their own separate process and do not use the CET score.
The main exam pattern, post-specific syllabus and later stages are set in each post's own advertisement. Read that advertisement before you start the post-specific part.
