The SSC GD salary is a big reason why lakhs of 10th-pass youth apply for the Constable (General Duty) exam every year. Through this exam, the Staff Selection Commission recruits constables for the Central Armed Police Forces and some other forces.

Most SSC GD posts are at Level 3 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. This page explains the pay, the allowances that come with a uniformed job, the forces you can join, and how you can grow in service. Pay rules change over time, so check the current notification.

Key takeaways
  • SSC GD Constable posts are at Level 3, with a starting basic pay of ₹21,700.
  • The pay range of Level 3 is ₹21,700 - ₹69,100.
  • The Sepoy post in the NCB is at Level 1 (₹18,000 basic).
  • Forces add allowances for rations, hardship areas and risk, as per rules.

What makes up the salary

  • Basic pay - fixed by the pay level.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA) - a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year by the central government.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) - depends on the city of posting. It has recently been 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay for X, Y and Z class cities, if government housing is not taken.
  • Transport Allowance - a fixed monthly amount that depends on the pay level and city.
  • Deductions - mainly the pension contribution (NPS, with an option for the Unified Pension Scheme) and other small deductions as per rules.

So take-home pay differs from city to city, even at the same level. The 8th Pay Commission has been set up by the government; when its recommendations are put in place, these figures will change.

In uniformed forces, there can also be ration money, uniform allowance, and hardship or risk allowances for postings in border, high-altitude or difficult areas, as per the rules of each force.

Training after selection

Selected candidates go through basic training at their force's training centres for several months. Training covers:

  • Physical fitness, drill and parade.
  • Weapon handling and field craft.
  • Law, human rights and the duties of the force.

Pay is given during training. After training, constables are posted to battalions or units as per the force's needs.

How to prepare

  1. Running - start with short runs and build up to the full distance within the time limit; practise four to five days a week.
  2. Elementary maths and reasoning - practise Class 10 level arithmetic and simple reasoning daily.
  3. General Knowledge - static GK, history, geography, polity, science and current affairs.
  4. English or Hindi - grammar and comprehension, as per your choice.

Balance written and physical preparation - many candidates clear the written test but fail the race.

Exam and selection in brief

SSC GD selection in recent cycles has had:

  1. A computer-based exam on reasoning, General Knowledge, elementary maths, and English or Hindi.
  2. A Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST).
  3. A medical examination and document verification.

The age limit has been 18 to 23 years, with relaxation for reserved categories. See our SSC GD exam guide for the full pattern and syllabus.

Pension after retirement

Central government employees who joined on or after 1 January 2004 are covered by the National Pension System (NPS). The employee contributes 10% of basic pay plus DA, and the government contributes 14%.

Since 1 April 2025, employees under NPS can choose the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which gives an assured pension of 50% of the average basic pay of the last 12 months for those with 25 years of service, and a minimum pension for those with at least 10 years. Check the latest rules when you join.

Documents to keep ready

  • Class 10 certificate for date of birth and qualification.
  • Caste, EWS or other category certificate in the central government format, where relevant.
  • Domicile certificate where the notice asks for it (for example, State-wise vacancies).
  • Photo identity proof and recent photographs, as asked at document verification.

Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents.

Common mistakes

  1. Starting physical practice too late. Begin running from day one.
  2. Not checking height and chest before applying.
  3. Choosing a force only by pay. Pay is the same for most forces; think of the duty and postings.
  4. Ignoring the medical rules on eyesight and fitness.
