KVS PGT is the recruitment for Post Graduate Teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas. A PGT teaches classes 11 and 12 in one subject, such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, English, Hindi, History, Economics or Computer Science.
In the 2025 recruitment, teaching posts of KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) were filled together, with exams conducted by the CBSE. The selection had a common Tier 1, a subject-based Tier 2 and an interview. Each cycle sets its own pattern, so read the current notice before planning.
- A PGT teaches classes 11 and 12 in one subject.
- Candidates need a master's degree in the subject and a B.Ed; CTET is not required for PGT.
- The 2025 cycle had Tier 1, Tier 2 and an interview, with 85% weightage to the written exam.
- Eligibility, pattern and weightage change with each notice - confirm them in the current KVS or CBSE notification.
PGT vs TGT vs PRT

Subjects
PGT posts have been advertised in subjects such as:
- Languages - English and Hindi.
- Sciences - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science and Bio-Technology.
- Humanities and commerce - History, Geography, Economics and Commerce.
The subjects and number of vacancies change with each cycle and differ between KVS and NVS.
Selection process
In the 2025 combined KVS-NVS recruitment, selection for PGT had these stages:
- Tier 1 - a common objective exam used to shortlist candidates for Tier 2.
- Tier 2 - a subject-specific written exam at the post-graduate teaching level.
- Interview - for candidates shortlisted after Tier 2.
The final merit gave 85% weightage to the written exam and 15% to the interview. Earlier KVS cycles used a different pattern, so always follow the notice of your cycle.
Tier 1 pattern
In the 2025 cycle, Tier 1 was a common objective paper of 100 questions for 300 marks, held in two hours in OMR mode. It had:
- Four general parts of 20 questions each, on areas such as reasoning, general awareness and current affairs, computer literacy, and education and pedagogy.
- Two language parts of 10 questions each - one in English and one in an Indian language.
Wrong answers carried negative marking. The exact parts and marking are fixed in the notice of each cycle.
Tier 2 and interview
Tier 2 tests the subject at the level needed to teach classes 11 and 12, and some topics of graduation and post-graduation. It also checks the teaching of the subject - planning a lesson, using activities and assessing students.
The interview checks subject depth, clarity of explanation and attitude towards students. Prepare a short explanation of one or two class 11-12 topics, as boards often ask candidates to explain a concept as they would in class.
Pay and benefits
A KVS PGT is placed at Level 8 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, with a starting basic pay of ₹47,600. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other central allowances are added, so the take-home pay depends on the city of posting.
PGTs can later be promoted to Vice Principal and Principal through departmental routes and limited exams, as per KVS rules.
How to apply
- Read the detailed notice on the official recruitment website named in the advertisement.
- Register and fill the application, choosing the post, subject and exam city.
- Upload your photograph, signature and documents as asked.
- Pay the fee online (exempt for some categories) and keep the confirmation page.
- Download the admit card for each tier and read all instructions.
In a combined KVS-NVS recruitment, check whether you can apply for both organisations and how preferences work.
Life as a KV teacher
A PGT handles board classes, so results of class 12 are an important part of the job. Teachers also guide students for science exhibitions, olympiads and career choices, and take part in school events and exam duties.
KVs exist across India, including remote and border areas. New teachers may be posted far from home at first, with transfers later under the KVS transfer policy.
A simple study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Tier 1 - reasoning, computers and education perspectives, with daily current affairs |
| Weeks 5-6 | Tier 1 mocks and language parts |
| Weeks 7-13 | Tier 2 - your subject from NCERT class 11-12 books, then graduation-level topics, and teaching methods |
| Weeks 14-16 | Tier 2 mocks, previous KVS PGT papers and interview practice |
How to prepare
Education and leadership. Read the key ideas of the National Education Policy 2020, competency-based learning, inclusive education and school leadership.
Subject. Start with NCERT class 11 and 12 books, since Tier 2 is built around them. Then add graduation-level topics from standard books.
Practice. Solve previous KVS and NVS PGT papers, and state PGT papers such as DSSSB, to see the level.
Exam-day plan. Attempt the sections you know best first, keep time for the language parts, and avoid blind guesses because of negative marking.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth.
- Marksheets and certificates of Class 12, graduation and post-graduation, year-wise where asked.
- B.Ed or other professional qualification certificate, where required.
- Caste, EWS, non-creamy layer or disability certificate in the format given in the notice, where relevant.
- Photo identity proof, recent photographs and a signature scan for the online form.
Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents. Mismatches cause trouble at verification.
Common mistakes
- Applying with a non-matching master's subject.
- Ignoring Tier 1. It decides who reaches Tier 2.
- Studying only graduation-level theory and skipping NCERT basics.
- No interview practice. It carries 15% weightage.
- Using an old pattern. Follow the latest notice.
