KVS TGT is the recruitment for Trained Graduate Teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) runs these central government schools across India and abroad, mainly for children of transferable central employees. A TGT teaches classes 6 to 10 in a subject such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies.
In the 2025 recruitment, teaching posts of KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) were filled together, and the exams were conducted by the CBSE. The pattern of each cycle is set in its notice, so read the current one before you plan.
- A TGT teaches classes 6 to 10 in one subject.
- Candidates need a graduation in the subject, a B.Ed and a pass in CTET Paper II.
- The 2025 cycle had a Tier 1 exam, a subject-based Tier 2 and an interview.
- Eligibility, pattern and weightage change with each notice - confirm them in the current KVS or CBSE notification.
About Kendriya Vidyalayas
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan was set up in 1963 under the Ministry of Education. It runs more than a thousand schools, including a few outside India. All KVs follow the CBSE syllabus, so a child of a transferred employee can continue with the same books in a new city.
Teachers in KVs are central government employees. They can be transferred across India, and they get central pay, allowances and leave rules.

Subjects
TGT posts have been advertised in these subjects:
- Hindi, English and Sanskrit
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- Some cycles have also had Physical and Health Education, Art Education and Work Experience teachers, and NVS has had a third language TGT.
Choose only the subject that matches your degree and B.Ed method subjects.
Selection process
In the 2025 combined KVS-NVS recruitment, selection for TGT had these stages:
- Tier 1 - a common objective exam, used to shortlist candidates.
- Tier 2 - a subject-specific written exam.
- Interview - for candidates shortlisted after Tier 2.
The final merit was made by giving 85% weightage to the written exam and 15% to the interview. Earlier KVS cycles used a different pattern, so always follow the notice of your cycle.
Tier 1 pattern
In the 2025 cycle, Tier 1 was an objective paper of 100 questions for 300 marks, held in two hours in OMR mode. It had six parts:
- Four general parts of 20 questions each, on areas such as reasoning, general awareness and current affairs, computer literacy, and education and pedagogy.
- Two language parts of 10 questions each - one in English and one in an Indian language chosen by the candidate.
The exact names of the parts, the marking and any negative marking are fixed in the notice of each cycle, so read it before you plan your study.
Tier 2 and interview
Tier 2 tests the candidate's own subject at the level needed to teach classes 6 to 10. It covers:
- Subject knowledge - content of the subject at secondary level and a little beyond.
- Teaching of the subject - methods, lesson planning, assessment and common learner errors.
The interview checks communication, subject clarity and attitude towards children. Some cycles have also asked for a short demo lesson. Prepare one or two topics that you can explain clearly in ten minutes.
Pay and benefits
A KVS TGT is placed at Level 7 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, with a starting basic pay of ₹44,900. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other central allowances are added, so the take-home pay depends on the city of posting.
A TGT can later be promoted to PGT if he or she meets the qualification for that post, and further to Vice Principal and Principal through departmental routes.
Life as a KV teacher
KV schools usually have well-planned timetables, smart classrooms in many places, and children from many States studying together. A TGT may also handle class teacher duties, school events, exams and co-curricular clubs.
Since KVs are spread across India, including remote and border areas, new teachers are often posted far from home at first. Transfers then follow the KVS transfer policy. Think about this before you apply.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth.
- Marksheets of Class 12, graduation and B.Ed (or D.El.Ed), year-wise where asked.
- TET or CTET scorecard and certificate.
- Caste, EWS, non-creamy layer or disability certificate in the format given in the notice, where relevant.
- Photo identity proof, recent photographs and a signature scan for the online form.
Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents. Mismatches cause trouble at verification.
A simple study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Tier 1 - reasoning, computers and education perspectives, with daily current affairs |
| Weeks 5-6 | Tier 1 mocks and language sections |
| Weeks 7-12 | Tier 2 - your subject from NCERT books of classes 6 to 12, and teaching methods |
| Weeks 13-14 | Tier 2 mocks and interview practice with a demo topic |
How to prepare
Education and leadership. Read the main ideas of the National Education Policy 2020, child-centred learning, inclusive education, school leadership and assessment.
Computers. Revise basics of hardware, software, MS Office, internet, email, cyber safety and ICT tools used in classrooms.
Subject. Use NCERT books from class 6 to 12 as the base. Make short notes and practise questions of CTET Paper II and earlier KVS papers.
Interview. Speak about why you want to teach, how you handle a weak student, and how you would explain one topic using an activity.
Exam-day plan. Attempt the sections you know best first, keep time for the language parts, and avoid blind guesses where there is negative marking.
Common mistakes
- Applying without the right subject combination in graduation.
- Ignoring Tier 1. It decides who reaches Tier 2.
- Studying only content and skipping teaching methods for Tier 2.
- No interview practice. It carries 15% weightage.
- Using an old pattern. Follow the latest notice.
