MAHA TET is the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test. It is held by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE), based in Pune. Passing it makes a candidate eligible to teach in schools of Maharashtra from classes 1 to 8.
The test follows the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and has two papers, much like the CTET. It is offered in several media, including Marathi, English and Urdu, among others.
- Paper I is for classes 1 to 5; Paper II is for classes 6 to 8.
- Each paper has had 150 objective questions of one mark each, with no negative marking.
- Passing gives eligibility; recruitment in Maharashtra also involves a separate aptitude test.
- The pattern, qualifying marks and dates are fixed in each MSCE notice - confirm them there.
Paper I and Paper II
| Point | Paper I | Paper II |
|---|---|---|
| Classes | 1 to 5 | 6 to 8 |
| Questions | 150 | 150 |
| Main sections | Child development, two languages, mathematics, environmental studies | Child development, two languages, and either mathematics and science or social studies |
| Typical qualification | Class 12 with D.El.Ed | Graduation with B.Ed or D.El.Ed |
A candidate who wants to teach both levels can take both papers. The time, sections and media are given in the notice.
The test has been offered in several media, including Marathi, English, Urdu and Hindi, along with some other languages, to serve schools of different language groups in the state. The list of media is given in each notice. Choose the medium in which you will teach, since Language I is usually the medium of instruction.
In the maths and EVS sections, many questions ask how a concept should be taught to a child, not just the answer to a sum. Practise the pedagogy part of each subject along with its content, using examples from everyday life.
Paper I pattern
In recent cycles, Paper I has had five sections of 30 questions each:
- Child Development and Pedagogy
- Language I - the medium of instruction, such as Marathi
- Language II - such as English or Marathi
- Mathematics
- Environmental Studies
Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking. The questions are at the level of classes 1 to 5, but they test teaching methods too, not just facts.

Paper II pattern
Paper II has had:
- Child Development and Pedagogy - 30 questions
- Language I - 30 questions
- Language II - 30 questions
- Mathematics and Science or Social Studies - 60 questions, as the candidate chooses
Mathematics and science teachers take the first option; social studies teachers take the second. Language teachers usually take the social studies option.
Qualifying marks and validity
To pass, a candidate must reach the qualifying marks. In recent cycles this has been 60% for general candidates, with a lower mark for reserved categories and persons with disabilities.
- Passing gives a TET certificate.
- It does not give a job by itself.
- For recruitment in Maharashtra, candidates have also had to take the Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT), and posts are filled through the state's online recruitment portal.
The NCTE has extended the validity of TET certificates. Follow the latest Maharashtra government order on validity.
Who can apply
- Paper I - class 12 with the required marks and a two-year D.El.Ed, or other qualifications allowed by NCTE.
- Paper II - graduation with a B.Ed, or graduation with a D.El.Ed, as the rules allow.
Candidates in the final year of their teacher training course may be allowed to apply. There is no upper age limit for appearing in the test itself; age rules apply at the time of recruitment.
The exact qualifications, minimum marks and documents are set in each notice. Check them before applying.
Child development and pedagogy - what to cover
- Growth and development - stages, principles, heredity and environment.
- Learning theories - Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Bruner and behaviourism.
- Inclusive education - learners with special needs and from diverse backgrounds.
- Evaluation - continuous and comprehensive evaluation and types of tests.
- Policies - the Right to Education Act, 2009 and the National Education Policy, 2020.
Questions are often based on classroom situations. Read each option carefully and choose the most child-centred answer.
What is TAIT?
In Maharashtra, passing the TET is not the end. For recruitment, candidates have also had to take the Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT), conducted by the state.
- TAIT tests aptitude, reasoning and intelligence along with teaching-related ability.
- Its score is used for merit-based recruitment of teachers.
- Posts are then filled through the state's online recruitment portal, where candidates choose schools and give preferences.
The pattern, marks and schedule of TAIT are announced separately. Keep an eye on both MSCE and the School Education Department notices.
A simple study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Child development and pedagogy theory, with short notes on each thinker |
| Weeks 5-8 | Languages and the subject sections, using school textbooks |
| Weeks 9-10 | Topic tests and pedagogy-based case questions |
| Weeks 11-12 | Full mocks every two days and revision of weak areas |
Keep a fixed daily slot for pedagogy throughout. It is the one section that stays the same across every level and paper.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 and 12 marksheets and certificates.
- D.El.Ed or B.Ed marksheets and certificate.
- Graduation marksheets for Paper II.
- Caste, non-creamy layer and disability certificates where relevant.
- Photo identity proof, photographs and signature scans for the online form.
Check that your name and date of birth match across all documents. Mismatches cause trouble at verification later.
How to prepare
Pedagogy daily. Spend time every day on child development, since it carries equal weight in both papers.
Language papers. Practise Marathi and English grammar, comprehension and pedagogy of language teaching.
State Board books. For maths, EVS, science and social studies, revise the Maharashtra State Board books of the relevant classes.
Previous papers. Solve old MAHA TET and CTET papers within time. With no negative marking, attempt every question.
Exam-day plan. Read each pedagogy question slowly, since the options are close. Mark doubtful ones, finish the paper, and then return to them.
For other TET exams, see the CTET, MP TET, Super TET and HTET guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Thinking TET gives a job. Recruitment needs further steps, such as TAIT.
- Choosing the wrong Paper II option. Pick maths-science or social studies as per your subject.
- Weak pedagogy. It decides many results.
- Leaving questions blank. With no negative marking, attempt all.
- Using an old pattern. Follow the latest MSCE notice.
