MP TET is the Teacher Eligibility Test of Madhya Pradesh. It is held by the Madhya Pradesh Employee Selection Board (MPESB), based in Bhopal. Passing it makes a candidate eligible to be considered for teacher posts in government schools of the state.

There are three levels, called Varg. Varg 3 is for primary teachers (classes 1 to 5), Varg 2 for middle and secondary school teachers, and Varg 1 for higher secondary teachers. Passing the test gives eligibility; the actual recruitment is done through a separate selection exam.

Key takeaways
  • MPESB holds the eligibility test at three levels - Varg 1, 2 and 3.
  • The tests have been objective, with sections on child development, languages and subjects.
  • A candidate must reach the qualifying marks to get the eligibility certificate.
  • The pattern, qualifying marks and eligibility are fixed in each MPESB rule book - confirm them there.

The three levels

Varg 1 and Varg 2 pattern

The Varg 1 and Varg 2 tests are subject-based. They have covered:

  • General awareness and teaching aptitude, including child psychology and pedagogy.
  • The subject chosen by the candidate, such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science or Social Science, at the graduate or post-graduate level.

The tests are objective and held online. The section-wise questions, marks and time are given in the rule book for each cycle.

Subjects offered at these levels have included Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Physical Education, Music and Art, depending on the level and vacancies. Pick the subject that matches your degree exactly, because a mismatch can lead to rejection at verification.

Language sections at the primary level test both the language itself and the pedagogy of teaching it - such as how children learn to read and how to correct errors without discouraging them.

Qualifying marks and certificate

To pass, a candidate must reach the minimum qualifying marks. In recent cycles this has been 60% for general candidates, with a lower mark for reserved categories and persons with disabilities of Madhya Pradesh.

  • The result gives a scorecard or eligibility certificate.
  • Passing the test does not by itself give a job.
  • Recruitment is done through a separate selection test held by MPESB, followed by counselling.

The validity of the eligibility is set by the state's rules. Follow NCTE guidance and the latest state notice on this point.

Who can apply

The eligibility depends on the level, as shown in the table above. In general:

  • Varg 3 - class 12 with the required marks and a two-year D.El.Ed, or other qualifications allowed by the rules.
  • Varg 2 - graduation in the relevant subject with a B.Ed or equivalent.
  • Varg 1 - post-graduation in the subject with a B.Ed or equivalent.

Candidates in the final year of D.El.Ed or B.Ed may be allowed to apply, as the notice states. Reservation benefits apply to candidates domiciled in Madhya Pradesh.

The exact qualifications, minimum marks and age rules are set in each rule book. Check them before applying.

Child development and pedagogy - what to cover

This section appears in all levels and often decides the result.

  • Growth and development - stages, principles and the role of heredity and environment.
  • Learning theories - Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Skinner and Pavlov.
  • Inclusive education - children with special needs and learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Assessment - continuous and comprehensive evaluation, formative and summative tests.
  • Policies - the Right to Education Act, 2009 and the National Education Policy, 2020.

From eligibility to a teaching job

The full path to a government teacher post in Madhya Pradesh has had these steps:

  1. Pass the eligibility test at the right level (Varg 1, 2 or 3).
  2. Appear in the selection test held by MPESB when vacancies are announced.
  3. Get placed in the merit list by subject and category.
  4. Attend counselling and document verification by the School Education or Tribal Affairs department.
  5. Receive the appointment and join a school.

So passing the TET is the first gate, not the last. Keep preparing for the selection test as soon as you clear the eligibility test.

A simple study plan

PhaseFocus
Weeks 1-4Child development and pedagogy theory, with short notes on each thinker
Weeks 5-8Languages and the subject sections, using school textbooks
Weeks 9-10Topic tests and pedagogy-based case questions
Weeks 11-12Full mocks every two days and revision of weak areas

Keep a fixed daily slot for pedagogy throughout. It is the one section that stays the same across every level and paper.

How to prepare

Pedagogy first. Learn the theories and apply them to classroom situations, since questions are often case-based.

Languages. Revise Hindi and English grammar and practise unseen passages and pedagogy of language teaching.

Mathematics and EVS for Varg 3. Revise NCERT and MP Board books of classes 1 to 5, with the pedagogy of each subject.

Subject depth for Varg 1 and 2. Revise graduation or post-graduation texts unit by unit.

Previous papers. Solve old MP TET and CTET papers within time. With no negative marking, attempt every question.

Exam-day plan. Start with the section you know best, keep moving, and mark doubtful questions to return to. Leave a few minutes at the end to make sure every question is answered.

For similar exams, see the CTET, UPTET, HTET and REET guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Treating TET as a job. It gives eligibility; recruitment is separate.
  2. Ignoring pedagogy. Child development questions are common to all levels.
  3. Applying at the wrong level. Check the qualification for each Varg.
  4. Leaving questions blank. With no negative marking, attempt all.
  5. Using old rules. Eligibility rules have changed; follow the latest rule book.
