TSPSC Group 2 is the recruitment of Group II services of the Telangana State Public Service Commission, based in Hyderabad. After the State's code changed from TS to TG, the Commission is also written as TGPSC. The exam fills middle-level executive and non-executive posts across Telangana government departments.

Group 2 is a popular exam for graduates in Telangana because it leads to field posts such as Naib Tahsildar, Municipal Commissioner and Assistant Commercial Tax Officer. A large part of the syllabus is about Telangana's history, society, economy and the statehood movement.

Key takeaways
  • The written exam has had four objective papers, each of equal weight.
  • The selection has been based on the written exam, without an interview, in recent cycles.
  • Paper IV is about the Telangana movement and state formation.
  • The posts, marks, age band and pattern are fixed in each TSPSC notification - confirm them there.

Posts under Group 2

Executive posts such as Naib Tahsildar and Municipal Commissioner involve field work, public dealing and the handling of government schemes at the mandal and town level. Non-executive posts such as Assistant Section Officer are office-based in the Secretariat and departments. Choose your post preferences with this difference in mind, because the allotment follows your rank and your choices.

Some posts, such as Excise Sub-Inspector, have physical standards. The post list and vacancies are given in each notification.

The four papers

The written exam has had four objective papers of equal marks:

PaperSubject
Paper IGeneral Studies and General Abilities
Paper IIHistory, Polity and Society
Paper IIIEconomy and Development
Paper IVTelangana Movement and State Formation

Because all four papers carry equal weight, a weak paper pulls down the total as much as a strong paper lifts it. Spread your time evenly, and do not leave Paper III or Paper IV to the last month. Many toppers say that Paper IV, being Telangana-specific, is where the real difference in marks is made.

The papers can be taken in English, Telugu or Urdu, as the notification allows. The marks, time per paper and negative marking, if any, are given in the notification.

How to prepare

Telangana first. Paper IV and large parts of the other papers are about Telangana. Build a notebook of the movement, its leaders, committees and key dates.

Telugu Academy books. These are the standard base for history, society and economy.

Economy and schemes. Read the Telangana Socio-Economic Outlook and the state budget for Paper III.

Paper I practice. Solve reasoning and data interpretation questions every day.

Exam-day plan. Each paper is long. Read every question fully, mark doubtful ones and come back to them, and keep the last few minutes to check the answer sheet.

For the higher state services, see the TSPSC Group 1 guide. For the neighbouring state, see the APPSC Group 2 and APPSC Group 1 guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Treating Paper IV lightly. It is a full paper on the Telangana movement.
  2. Using old Andhra Pradesh material without care. Many facts changed after 2014.
  3. Ignoring Paper I abilities. Reasoning and data questions are scoring.
  4. Missing the OTR. Applications go through One Time Registration.
  5. Using an old pattern. Work only from the current notification.
