UP TGT is the recruitment of Trained Graduate Teachers for government-aided secondary schools in Uttar Pradesh. TGTs teach classes 6 to 10 in their subject. The exam was earlier held by the UP Secondary Education Service Selection Board. It is now under the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), set up in 2023.
Each candidate appears in one subject, such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science, Social Science or Art. The exam is popular because it gives a stable state-level teaching job to graduates with a B.Ed.
- The selection has been through a written exam in the chosen subject.
- The written exam has been objective, with a single paper for each subject.
- The core eligibility is graduation in the subject plus a B.Ed or equivalent teacher training.
- The subjects, vacancies, marks and age rules are fixed in each notification - confirm them there.
About UPESSC
The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission was created by a state law in 2023. It brought together the work of two older bodies - the UP Secondary Education Service Selection Board, which recruited teachers for aided secondary schools, and the UP Higher Education Service Commission, which recruited teachers for aided degree colleges.
The aim was to have one commission for teacher recruitment in aided institutions of the state. Because the Commission is new, its rules, exam calendar and procedures should be read from its latest notifications and official website.

The written exam
The written exam has been a single objective paper in the subject the candidate applies for.
- Most questions test the subject itself at the graduate level - for example, grammar and literature for Hindi or English, or algebra, geometry and calculus basics for Mathematics.
- Some questions may cover teaching methods, general knowledge or current affairs, as the syllabus states.
- The paper is set in Hindi and English for most subjects.
The number of questions, marks, time, negative marking and the subject-wise syllabus are given in the notification. Download the syllabus for your subject before you begin.
Subjects offered
Subjects in recent cycles have included:
- Languages - Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu
- Mathematics and Science
- Social Science
- Biology
- Art, Music, Physical Education, Home Science, Agriculture and Commerce
Each subject has its own eligibility. For example, Science may ask for graduation with physics and chemistry or similar subjects, and Physical Education may ask for a degree or diploma in physical education. Check your subject's rule in the notification.
If your degree fits more than one subject, choose the one in which you are strongest and which has more vacancies in recent notifications. The paper goes deep into the subject, so a subject you studied well in graduation gives you a clear edge over one you only passed.
Who can apply
The core requirement has been:
- A bachelor's degree from a recognised university with the relevant subject, and
- A B.Ed or an equivalent teacher training qualification recognised by the NCTE.
Some subjects, such as Art, Music and Physical Education, have their own degree or diploma rules.
The age rule is given in the notification, with relaxations for reserved categories and other groups under UP rules. Reservation benefits apply to candidates domiciled in Uttar Pradesh.
The qualification per subject, age rule and documents are set in each notification. Check them before applying.
Selection and posting
After the written exam, a merit list is prepared subject-wise and category-wise. Candidates then go through document verification.
Selected candidates are allotted to aided secondary schools across districts, based on merit, preference and vacancies. The school management issues the appointment as per the rules.
The selection stages, merit rules and allotment process are explained in each notification. Some rules have changed with the new Commission, so read the latest one fully.
Pay and work
A TGT gets a state pay scale with dearness allowance and other benefits, as per UP government rules for aided school teachers.
The work includes teaching classes 6 to 10, preparing students for the UP Board high school exam, conducting tests, and school duties such as exams and events. With experience and further qualification, a TGT can move to a lecturer (PGT) post through the rules or a fresh exam.
A six-month study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Months 1-2 | Read the full subject syllabus once from graduation textbooks and make short notes. |
| Months 3-4 | Second reading with topic-wise question practice and previous papers. |
| Month 5 | Weak topics, teaching methods and general knowledge, if in the syllabus. |
| Month 6 | Full mocks every two days, error review and quick revision of notes. |
Keep at least one hour a day for revision of what you studied the week before. Steady revision matters more than reading many new books.
Documents to keep ready
- High school and intermediate certificates, for date of birth and marks.
- Graduation marksheets and degree, with the subject clearly shown.
- B.Ed or equivalent teacher training certificate.
- Caste, domicile and other reservation certificates in the format required by UP.
- Photo identity proof and recent photographs.
Missing or mismatched documents are a common reason for trouble at verification. Check names and dates on all certificates early.
How to prepare
Subject depth. The paper is mainly on your subject. Revise graduation-level textbooks unit by unit.
Previous papers. Solve old UP TGT papers of your subject. Question styles and favourite topics repeat.
Teaching methods. Revise the B.Ed basics of pedagogy, child development and evaluation, in case the syllabus includes them.
Timed practice. Take full mocks for your subject within the exam time.
Exam-day plan. Attempt the questions you know first, mark doubtful ones, and come back to them. Keep a few minutes at the end to check the answer sheet.
For other teacher exams, see the Super TET, UPTET, CTET and KVS PRT guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong subject. Your degree must match the subject's rule.
- Skipping the syllabus. Each subject has its own detailed syllabus.
- Studying only guides. Graduate-level textbooks are needed for depth.
- Missing the B.Ed rule. A recognised teacher training qualification is required.
- Using old rules. The exam moved to a new Commission; follow the latest notification.
