The preliminary exam

The prelims is an online objective test. In recent cycles it has had three sections:

  • Test of Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Language

The prelims is qualifying. Candidates must clear the sectional cut-offs to reach the mains. Negative marking of one-fourth mark per wrong answer has applied.

The number of questions, marks and time are given in the notification.

The main exam

The mains is also an online test. In recent cycles it has covered:

  • Test of Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • General Awareness, with emphasis on agriculture, rural development and banking
  • Computer Knowledge
  • English - with a descriptive part such as essay, letter or precis

For DA (Hindi), the mains has also included a Hindi paper, with translation from English to Hindi and Hindi to English.

The final merit has been based on the mains marks. The sections, marks and time are stated in each notification.

Language Proficiency Test

After the mains, short-listed candidates take a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) in the official language of the state they applied for.

  • The test checks reading, writing, speaking and understanding of the language.
  • It is qualifying; its marks are not added to the merit.
  • Candidates who have studied the language at the school level may be exempted, as the notification allows.

Failing the LPT makes a candidate ineligible even with a high mains score.

Who can apply

The academic requirement for DA has been a bachelor's degree with minimum marks, relaxed for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates. Computer knowledge is expected.

The age limit has been 21 to 35 years on a date stated in the notification, with relaxations for reserved categories, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen under government rules.

The qualification, minimum marks, age band and relaxations are set in each notification. Check them before applying.

NABARD - facts worth knowing

General awareness questions often touch NABARD itself:

  • NABARD was set up on 12 July 1982 on the recommendation of the B. Sivaraman Committee.
  • It took over the agricultural credit work of the RBI and the refinance work of the Agricultural Refinance and Development Corporation.
  • It manages the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), launched in 1995-96.
  • It led the SHG-Bank Linkage Programme, started in 1992, which links self-help groups to banks.
  • It supervises Regional Rural Banks and cooperative banks.

For the officer-level exam of the same bank, see the NABARD Grade A guide.

Many candidates prepare for both. The DA exam is a good first step, and staff can later take the officer exam if they meet the conditions.

Pay and career

Development Assistants get a pay scale with dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other benefits, as set out in the notification. NABARD staff also get medical facilities and leave as per its rules.

Over time, a Development Assistant can move up within the staff cadre. Promotion depends on service, performance and the bank's rules. The job offers a stable working week and postings mainly in state capitals, where NABARD's regional offices are.

How to prepare

Prelims speed. Practise reasoning, quant and English at the bank clerk level with a timer.

Rural and agriculture GK. Learn NABARD's schemes, rural credit, Kisan Credit Cards, self-help groups and farm-sector news.

Descriptive English. Write one essay and one letter every week.

Computer knowledge. Cover MS Office, internet, networking basics and computer terms.

Previous papers and mocks. Solve old NABARD DA and RBI Assistant papers, since the level is similar. In the last month, take one full mock every two days and review every wrong answer.

Exam-day plan. In the prelims, start with the section you are strongest in, keep an eye on the sectional timer, and skip questions that take too long. In the mains, keep enough time for the descriptive English part, since a blank answer there costs heavily.

For similar clerk-level banking exams, see the IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and RBI Assistant guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Ignoring the LPT. Failing the language test ends the selection.
  2. Weak descriptive English. The mains has a writing part that many candidates neglect.
  3. Skipping rural GK. NABARD questions focus on agriculture and rural credit.
  4. Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
  5. Choosing a state without its language. You must know the official language of the state you apply for.
