EPFO SSA is the recruitment exam for the post of Social Security Assistant in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). EPFO is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It runs the provident fund and pension schemes for crores of workers in the organised sector.
A Social Security Assistant is a Group C clerical post in EPFO's regional offices. The work covers member accounts, employer contributions and claims for provident fund and pension. Recruitment is not held every year, so candidates prepare alongside other clerical exams and apply when a notice comes.
- The post is Social Security Assistant, a Group C post in EPFO.
- Candidates need a bachelor's degree and a computer typing speed.
- Selection has had a written objective test followed by a qualifying typing test.
- Vacancies, pattern and dates change with each notice - confirm them in the current EPFO notification.
About EPFO
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation was set up under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. Its head office is in New Delhi, with regional and zonal offices across the country.
EPFO runs three main schemes:
- Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) - a savings fund built from monthly contributions by the worker and the employer.
- Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 - a monthly pension after retirement.
- Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI), 1976 - life cover for members.
Knowing these basics helps in the general awareness section and in an interview-style document check later.
What a Social Security Assistant does
The SSA is the main desk-level officer in a regional office. The work usually includes:
- Checking and updating member records and accounts.
- Processing claims for withdrawal, transfer and pension.
- Handling employer returns and contribution details.
- Answering grievances from members and employers.
Most work is done on computers, which is why typing and basic computer skills are part of the selection. With experience and departmental exams, an SSA can move up to higher posts in EPFO.

Eligibility
| Condition | Recent requirement |
|---|---|
| Education | Bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university |
| Typing | Computer typing at 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi |
| Age | 18 to 27 years on the cut-off date |
| Age relaxation | For SC/ST, OBC, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and some others, as per government rules |
These conditions are taken from recent recruitment notices. Each new notice fixes its own cut-off date and rules, so check the current one before applying.
Selection process
In recent recruitment, selection for the SSA post has had two stages:
- Written test - an objective, computer-based test. Merit is made from this stage.
- Computer typing test - a qualifying skill test. Marks are not added to merit, but failing it means the candidate is out.
After this come document verification and a medical check, and then allotment to a regional office. The 2023 recruitment of SSA and Stenographer was conducted through the National Testing Agency (NTA). The conducting body and pattern can change, so follow the notice.
Written test - what it covers
The written test has covered these areas:
| Section | Main topics |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude / Reasoning | Series, coding-decoding, analogy, blood relations, puzzles, directions, syllogism |
| General Knowledge and Awareness | Static GK, history, polity, geography, economy, science, current affairs |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, interest, time and work, data interpretation |
| English Language | Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, cloze test, comprehension |
| Computer Literacy | Basics of hardware and software, MS Office, internet, email, shortcuts |
There has been negative marking for wrong answers. The number of questions, marks, time and penalty are given in the notice for each cycle.
Typing test explained
The typing test checks speed and accuracy on a computer. The speed is often converted into key depressions:
- 35 words per minute in English is about 10,500 key depressions per hour.
- 30 words per minute in Hindi is about 9,000 key depressions per hour.
Practise on a computer keyboard, not a phone. For Hindi typing, check which keyboard layout the notice allows, such as Inscript or Remington, and practise only on that one.
Pay and career growth
In recent notices, the SSA post has been placed at Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, with a starting basic pay of ₹29,200. On top of this come dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances as per central government rules, so the take-home pay depends on the city of posting.
An SSA can be promoted over the years to posts such as Section Supervisor and Assistant Accounts Officer, through seniority and departmental exams. Officers can also later appear in the UPSC exam for higher EPFO posts if they meet its rules.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth.
- Graduation marksheets and degree, or a provisional certificate if allowed by the notice.
- Caste, EWS, non-creamy layer or disability certificate in the format given in the notice, where relevant.
- Photo identity proof, recent photographs and a signature scan for the online form.
Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents. Category certificates must usually be issued before the closing date of the application.
A simple study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Basics of quant and reasoning, daily English grammar, 20 minutes of typing |
| Weeks 5-8 | General awareness and computer literacy, with topic tests |
| Weeks 9-10 | Sectional tests and previous papers of clerical exams |
| Weeks 11-12 | Full mocks every two days and daily typing at test speed |
Keep typing practice daily from the first week. Many candidates clear the written test and then fail the typing test because they started too late.
How to prepare
Quant and reasoning. Learn the short methods for percentage, ratio and average first. Most other chapters build on them.
English. Read one short article daily and note new words. Practise error spotting and fill-in-the-blanks from previous papers.
General awareness. Cover static GK and the last six to eight months of current affairs. Add a few points on labour and social security - EPFO, ESIC, the labour codes and pension schemes - since an EPFO paper can touch them.
Computer literacy. Revise MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint basics, keyboard shortcuts, file types, internet terms and computer abbreviations.
Exam-day plan. Start with the section you are strongest in, skip lengthy questions in the first round, and avoid guesswork because of negative marking.
EPFO SSA vs UPSC EPFO
Do not mix up the two recruitments:
| Point | EPFO SSA | UPSC EPFO |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Social Security Assistant (Group C) | Enforcement Officer / Accounts Officer and APFC (higher posts) |
| Held by | EPFO, through an agency it chooses | Union Public Service Commission |
| Level of exam | Clerical, like SSC CHSL or bank clerk | Officer level, with a wider syllabus |
Common mistakes
- Ignoring typing. It is qualifying but decides the final list.
- Skipping computer literacy. It is an easy scoring section.
- Guessing too much. Negative marking reduces the score.
- Missing the age cut-off date. Check it in the notice.
- Using an old pattern. Follow the latest notification.
