About ESIC
The Employees' State Insurance Corporation runs the scheme made under the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948. The scheme was first started in 1952 at Kanpur and Delhi. Its head office is in New Delhi.
Insured workers and their families get:
- Medical benefit - treatment in ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.
- Sickness benefit - cash payment during certified sickness.
- Maternity benefit - paid leave for insured women.
- Disablement and dependants' benefit - for injury at work or death due to it.
Both the employer and the worker pay a small share of wages into the scheme. These basics are useful for the general awareness section.
What an Upper Division Clerk does
The UDC handles office work in ESIC units. The work usually includes:
- Keeping records of insured persons and employers.
- Processing benefit payments and bills.

| Education | Bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university |
| Computer skill | Working knowledge of computers, including office software and databases |
| Age | 18 to 27 years on the cut-off date |
| Age relaxation | For SC/ST, OBC, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen, ESIC employees and some others, as per rules |
These conditions are taken from recent recruitment notices. Check the current notice for the exact rules and cut-off date.
Selection process
In the last major recruitment, selection for UDC had three stages:
- Phase I - Preliminary exam, an objective screening test.
- Phase II - Main exam, a longer objective test. The final merit is based on this stage.
- Phase III - Computer Skill Test, which is qualifying only.
After this come document verification and allotment within the region. The number of stages, questions and marks are fixed in each notice, so read it carefully.
Prelims pattern
In the last major recruitment, the prelims had 100 objective questions for 200 marks in one hour, in four sections:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 25 | 50 |
| Reasoning | 25 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 25 | 50 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 50 |
There was negative marking for wrong answers. The prelims only shortlists candidates for the mains; its marks are not added to the final merit. Confirm the pattern in the current notice.
Mains and computer skill test
The mains covers the same four areas - English, reasoning, general awareness and quantitative aptitude - at a higher level and with more questions. It decides the final merit.
The computer skill test checks practical work on a computer, such as:
- Preparing and formatting a document in a word processor.
- Making a simple table and formulas in a spreadsheet.
- Creating a few slides in a presentation program.
It is qualifying, but failing it ends the candidate's chance. The exact tasks and time are given in the notice.
Region-wise vacancies
ESIC announces UDC vacancies separately for each region, usually by state. A candidate:
- Applies for only one region.
- Competes for the vacancies of that region and category.
- Is posted within that region if selected.
Look at the vacancy table before choosing. A region with more posts in your category can improve your chances, but think about where you want to work for many years.
Pay and career growth
In recent notices, the UDC post has been placed at Level 4 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, with a starting basic pay of ₹25,500. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances are added as per central government rules, so the take-home pay depends on the city of posting.
A UDC can be promoted to Assistant and then to higher supervisory and officer posts in ESIC, through seniority and departmental exams. Since ESIC has offices and hospitals in almost every state, transfers usually stay within the region at the start.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth.
- Graduation marksheets and degree, or a provisional certificate if allowed by the notice.
- Caste, EWS, non-creamy layer or disability certificate in the format given in the notice, where relevant.
- Photo identity proof, recent photographs and a signature scan for the online form.
Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents. Category certificates must usually be issued before the closing date of the application.
Computer topics to revise
- Word processing - fonts, paragraphs, tables, page setup, mail merge.
- Spreadsheets - cell references, basic formulas such as SUM and AVERAGE, sorting and charts.
- Presentations - slide layouts, inserting images and simple transitions.
- Basics - file types, shortcuts, internet and email terms, and common abbreviations.
Practise these on a real computer every week, since the skill test is hands-on.
A simple study plan
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Quant and reasoning basics, daily English grammar and reading |
| Weeks 5-8 | General awareness, with static GK and current affairs, plus topic tests |
| Weeks 9-10 | Mains-level practice and previous papers of clerical exams |
| Weeks 11-12 | Full mocks every two days and daily computer practice in Word, Excel and PowerPoint |
How to prepare
Quant. Speed matters in a one-hour prelims. Learn tables, squares and short methods, and practise simplification daily.
Reasoning. Puzzles and seating arrangement take time, so practise them regularly. Keep easy topics like series and coding for quick marks.
English. Focus on reading comprehension, error spotting and vocabulary.
General awareness. Cover static GK and recent current affairs. Add notes on labour and social security - ESIC, EPFO, the labour codes and welfare schemes.
Exam-day plan. Attempt the section you know best first, mark doubtful questions, and avoid wild guesses because of negative marking.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a region without checking vacancies.
- Ignoring the computer skill test until the result.
- Too much guessing with negative marking.
- Weak general awareness. It is the fastest section to score.
- Using an old pattern. Follow the latest notification.
