AP TET is the Andhra Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test. It is held by the Department of School Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh. Passing it makes a candidate eligible to teach classes 1 to 8 in schools of the state.

Unlike many other TETs, AP TET has four papers - 1A and 2A for regular schools, and 1B and 2B for special schools that teach children with disabilities. The TET score also carries weight in the state's teacher recruitment, known as DSC.

Key takeaways
  • Papers 1A and 1B are for classes 1-5; 2A and 2B are for classes 6-8.
  • Each paper has 150 one-mark questions in two and a half hours, with no negative marking.
  • The TET score has 20% weightage in DSC teacher recruitment.
  • Dates, mode and qualifying marks are fixed in each notice - confirm them in the current AP TET bulletin.

Following NCTE's decision, TET certificates now have lifetime validity. Candidates can still retake the TET to improve their score, which helps in recruitment.

Papers 1B and 2B - special education

Papers 1B and 2B are meant for teachers of special schools for children with disabilities, such as visual impairment, hearing impairment or intellectual disability.

  • Candidates need a special education qualification recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), as the bulletin asks.
  • The paper includes questions on the disability area chosen by the candidate, along with pedagogy for such children.

Choose the B paper only if you hold the matching special education qualification and plan to teach in such schools.

Language I and medium

Language I is the language in which the candidate wants to teach, such as Telugu or Urdu, or another language listed in the bulletin. Language II is English for all.

In DSC recruitment, posts are often filled by medium of instruction, so your Language I should match the medium of schools where you hope to teach.

TET weightage in DSC

Teachers for Andhra Pradesh government schools are recruited through the DSC (District Selection Committee) recruitment, with a written Teacher Recruitment Test (TRT).

  • The final merit gives 80% weightage to the TRT and 20% weightage to the TET score.
  • For example, a TET score of 120 out of 150 becomes 16 out of 20 in the DSC merit.

So every extra mark in the TET helps the final rank. This is why many candidates take the TET again even after passing.

How to apply

  1. Read the information bulletin on the official AP TET website.
  2. Pay the fee online for each paper you want to take.
  3. Fill the application, choosing the paper, Language I and subject option.
  4. Upload your photograph and signature and choose an exam centre.
  5. Download the hall ticket and check all details before the exam.

Recent sessions have been held as computer-based tests over several days. After the exam, a preliminary key is released, candidates can raise objections within a set time, and the final key and result follow. Qualified candidates download the TET marks memo, which is needed when applying for DSC. Save a copy safely, since it is valid for life.

Syllabus focus

Child Development and Pedagogy. Growth and development, learning theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg), inclusive education, motivation, assessment and the Right to Education Act.

Languages. Comprehension, grammar and the pedagogy of teaching a language.

Mathematics, EVS, Science and Social Studies. Content from Andhra Pradesh state textbooks of the relevant classes, along with subject pedagogy.

State-specific content - Andhra Pradesh's history, festivals, rivers, districts and government - appears in EVS and social studies, so read the state textbooks rather than only NCERT.

A simple study plan

PhaseFocus
Weeks 1-3Child development and pedagogy theory, with short notes
Weeks 4-7Languages and subject content from state textbooks
Weeks 8-9Subject pedagogy and topic tests
Weeks 10-12Full mocks every two days and previous AP TET papers

Documents to keep ready

  • Class 10 certificate for date of birth.
  • Marksheets and certificates of the qualifying degree or diploma.
  • Caste, EWS, non-creamy layer or disability certificate in the format given in the notice, where relevant.
  • Photo identity proof, recent photographs and a signature scan for the online form.

Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents. Mismatches cause trouble at verification.

Common mistakes

  1. Choosing the wrong paper - A or B, or the wrong subject option.
  2. Ignoring pedagogy, which is common to all papers.
  3. Using only NCERT instead of state textbooks.
  4. Stopping at the pass mark. The score counts in DSC.
  5. Leaving questions blank. There is no negative marking.

Exam-day plan. Start with the section you know best, mark doubtful questions, and use the last fifteen minutes to answer every marked one. Read pedagogy options slowly, since two of them are often close.
