Major Ports of India — West and East Coast List with PYQs

Major Ports of India — West and East Coast List with PYQs

Ports produce one question in almost every paper, and the shape never changes — a port is named and you give its state, or a "largest / deepest / oldest" superlative is asked. India has thirteen major ports, they split neatly between the west and east coasts, and each carries one signature fact that exams reuse for years. This post gives both coasts, the superlatives table that answers most questions on its own, and 15 real questions from past papers.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Mumbai — largest natural harbour · JNPT (Nhava Sheva) — largest container port
  • Deendayal (Kandla) — highest cargo volume · Visakhapatnam — deepest port
  • Kolkata — India's only major riverine port (with Haldia)
  • Kamarajar (Ennore) — first corporatised major port
  • Major ports are administered by the Centre under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways

1. Major vs minor ports — the two-line basics

Major ports are controlled by the central government under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, while minor and intermediate ports fall under state governments — India has around 200 of those. Port administration sits in the Concurrent-adjacent framework exams simplify as: major = Centre, minor = State.

The count of major ports stands at thirteen — twelve long-standing ones plus the upcoming Vadhavan port in Maharashtra, approved as the newest major port. Some older lists say twelve, so read the options: if Vadhavan appears, the intended answer counts thirteen. Port Blair was added as a major port in 2010.

2. West coast ports

PortState / UTSignature fact
Deendayal (Kandla)GujaratHandles the highest cargo volume; a tidal port; developed after Karachi went to Pakistan
MumbaiMaharashtraIndia's largest natural harbour
Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva)MaharashtraIndia's largest container port
MormugaoGoaIron ore exports
New MangaloreKarnatakaIron ore of the Kudremukh region; coffee exports
Kochi (Cochin)KeralaNatural harbour on Willingdon Island; called the Queen of the Arabian Sea
Vadhavan (upcoming)MaharashtraNewest approved major port, in Palghar district

The Kandla story is asked as history: after Partition sent Karachi to Pakistan, Kandla was developed to serve north-western India, and it was renamed Deendayal Port in 2017. Mumbai versus JNPT is the classic trap — Mumbai is the natural-harbour answer, JNPT the container answer — and the two sit across the same bay.

📌 Exam Focus

  • Asked most often: largest natural harbour (Mumbai), container (JNPT), cargo (Deendayal), deepest (Visakhapatnam), riverine (Kolkata)
  • Common trap: Mumbai vs JNPT — natural harbour vs container port
  • Remember renames: Kandla = Deendayal · Ennore = Kamarajar · Tuticorin = V O Chidambaranar

3. East coast ports

PortState / UTSignature fact
Kolkata (Shyama Prasad Mookerjee) with HaldiaWest BengalIndia's only major riverine port, on the Hooghly
ParadipOdishaFirst major port commissioned after independence; iron ore and coal
VisakhapatnamAndhra PradeshIndia's deepest port; iron ore exports; shipbuilding yard
ChennaiTamil NaduOne of India's oldest artificial harbours
Kamarajar (Ennore)Tamil NaduFirst corporatised major port; thermal coal
V O Chidambaranar (Tuticorin)Tamil NaduSouthern port; salt, fisheries and container traffic
Port BlairAndaman & NicobarDeclared a major port in 2010

Three signature facts dominate here. Kolkata is the riverine answer — an inland port roughly 128 km up the Hooghly, with Haldia as its downstream dock complex. Visakhapatnam is the deepest port and carries the shipbuilding association. Kamarajar (Ennore) is the first corporatised major port, run as a company rather than a port trust — a distinction exams love.

Tamil Nadu alone hosts three major ports (Chennai, Kamarajar, V O Chidambaranar), which itself appears as a question: which state has the most major ports.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many major ports does India have?

Thirteen, counting the upcoming Vadhavan port in Maharashtra approved as the newest major port; older lists say twelve. Major ports are administered by the central government under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, while roughly 200 minor and intermediate ports fall under state governments.

What is the difference between Mumbai Port and JNPT?

They sit across the same bay in Maharashtra but answer different questions. Mumbai Port is India's largest natural harbour and the older general-cargo port. Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva is India's largest container port. When a question says natural harbour, answer Mumbai; when it says containers, answer JNPT.

Why is Kolkata port called a riverine port?

Because it sits about 128 kilometres inland on the Hooghly river rather than on the open coast — the only major port of that kind in India. Haldia, downstream on the same river, functions as its dock complex for larger vessels. The port has been renamed after Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.

Which port was built because of Partition?

Kandla in Gujarat, now Deendayal Port. When Partition placed Karachi in Pakistan, north-western India lost its main port, and Kandla was developed on the Gulf of Kutch to replace it. Today it handles the highest cargo volume among Indian ports, helped by its tidal harbour and vast hinterland.

How many questions come from ports in exams?

Usually one per paper in SSC and Railway exams, and the superlatives — largest, deepest, riverine, first corporatised — cover most of them. The port-state pairs and the three renames answer the rest, so the whole topic fits on one revision sheet.
