Puppetry Forms of India — Type and State-wise List

Puppetry Forms of India — Type and State-wise List

Puppetry is one of the easiest culture topics to score in, because it has a clean two-layer structure. Every Indian puppet form belongs to one of four types — string, shadow, rod or glove — and each form belongs to one state. Learn the type and the state together and the whole topic is finished. This post gives the four types, every form exams ask about, and 15 previous year questions.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Four types — string, shadow, rod and glove puppets
  • Kathputli — Rajasthan, the best-known string puppet form
  • Tholu Bommalata — Andhra Pradesh, shadow puppets
  • Putul Nautch — West Bengal, rod puppets
  • Pavakathakali — Kerala, glove puppets in the Kathakali style

1. The four types of puppets

TypeHow it worksIndian examples
String puppetsJointed figures controlled by strings from aboveKathputli, Kundhei, Gombeyatta, Bommalattam
Shadow puppetsFlat leather figures held against a lit screenTholu Bommalata, Togalu Gombeyaata, Ravanachhaya, Tholpavakoothu
Rod puppetsLarger figures supported and moved by rods from belowPutul Nautch, Yampuri
Glove puppetsWorn on the hand, head and arms moved by fingersPavakathakali, Bengal glove puppetry

The type is asked as often as the state, so learn them together rather than separately. A useful shortcut: most forms whose names contain "bommala", "bommalattam" or "gombe" come from the south, since those words mean doll in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada respectively.

2. String puppets, state by state

FormStateNote
KathputliRajasthanThe most famous Indian puppet form; carved wooden figures in bright costume
KundheiOdishaLight wooden figures with flowing skirts, no legs
GombeyattaKarnatakaStyled on Yakshagana characters
BommalattamTamil NaduCombines string and rod; among the largest and heaviest Indian puppets
Malasutri BahulyaMaharashtraMarathi string puppetry

Kathputli with Rajasthan is the single most asked pairing in the topic. Bommalattam of Tamil Nadu carries an extra fact worth knowing: it uses both strings and rods, so a question asking which form combines two techniques has it as the answer.

Gombeyatta of Karnataka is the string form and should be kept apart from Togalu Gombeyaata, which is the shadow form of the same state. The word "togalu" means leather, which is the clue to the shadow type.

3. Shadow, rod and glove puppets

Three entries carry facts beyond the state pairing.

Ravanachhaya of Odisha is distinctive because its figures are made of deer skin, have no joints, and cast a sharper, more dramatic shadow than other forms. Its name means the shadow of Ravana, and it draws on the Ramayana.

Yampuri of Bihar is the rod form made from a single piece of wood with no joints, which makes it unlike the jointed rod puppets elsewhere. That is exactly the detail a harder question tests.

Pavakathakali of Kerala is glove puppetry performed in the costume, make-up and style of Kathakali, which is why it is asked in both the puppetry and the dance context.

Tholu Bommalata is worth noting for scale — its leather figures are large, coloured on both sides so the shadow carries colour, and among the biggest shadow puppets in India.

4. Quick state-to-form table

StateForms
RajasthanKathputli, string
OdishaKundhei, string; Ravanachhaya, shadow
KarnatakaGombeyatta, string; Togalu Gombeyaata, shadow
Tamil NaduBommalattam, string and rod
Andhra Pradesh and TelanganaTholu Bommalata, shadow
KeralaTholpavakoothu, shadow; Pavakathakali, glove
West BengalPutul Nautch, rod; glove puppetry

Four states have two forms each — Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal — and that is where papers build their distractors. In every one of those cases the two forms are of different types, so the type in the question tells you which is meant.

6. How to revise this topic

Learn each form as a pair of facts — type plus state — never as a name alone. Questions ask for either, and a candidate who learnt only the state gets the type questions wrong even though the name was familiar.

Use the four states with two forms as your checkpoints. Odisha has Kundhei and Ravanachhaya, Karnataka has Gombeyatta and Togalu Gombeyaata, Kerala has Tholpavakoothu and Pavakathakali, and West Bengal has Putul Nautch and glove puppetry. In each case the two forms are of different types, so the type named in the question resolves it.

Then attach the three distinguishing details that go beyond location: Bommalattam uses strings and rods, Ravanachhaya is jointless deer skin, and Yampuri is carved from a single piece of wood. Those three answer the harder questions in this topic.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the four types of puppets in India?

String, shadow, rod and glove puppets. Every Indian form belongs to one of these, and questions ask for the type as often as for the state, so learn the two together for each form.

Which state is Kathputli from?

Rajasthan. Kathputli is a string puppet form using carved wooden figures in bright costume, and it is the most widely known Indian puppet tradition and the most frequently asked in this topic.

What is the difference between Gombeyatta and Togalu Gombeyaata?

Both are from Karnataka. Gombeyatta is the string puppet form, styled on Yakshagana characters, while Togalu Gombeyaata is the shadow form. The word togalu means leather, which is the clue that it is the shadow tradition.

Which puppet form uses both strings and rods?

Bommalattam of Tamil Nadu, which combines the two techniques and uses among the largest and heaviest puppets in India. It is asked specifically because it does not fit neatly into a single type.

What is special about Ravanachhaya puppets?

They are shadow puppets from Odisha made of deer skin, without joints, which produces a sharper and more dramatic shadow than jointed forms. The name means the shadow of Ravana, and the repertoire draws on the Ramayana.
