Army Agniveer Exam: Pattern, CEE, Rally & Eligibility

Agnipath is the recruitment model under which soldiers, sailors and airmen below officer rank are enrolled in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those recruited under it are called Agniveers.

Two points are worth being clear about, because candidates ask about both. The four-year engagement is not a probation — it is the full term for the majority, and retention is competitive. And those not retained do not receive a pension; they receive the Seva Nidhi package and the service certificate.

Several central and state governments have announced reservations or preferences for former Agniveers in police and other services, and those provisions have been added over time. Since they differ by state and department and are still being notified, check the specific advertisement rather than relying on a general claim.

The scheme applies across the three services, so a candidate comparing options should look at the Army, Navy and Air Force notifications separately — the categories, physical standards and technical requirements differ between them.

Applying to the wrong category is the most common avoidable mistake, because the educational requirement differs sharply between them.

The Clerk and Store Keeper Technical category carries the highest academic bar of the four, which surprises candidates who assume the technical category is the demanding one. Read the percentage requirements carefully, since both an aggregate and a per-subject minimum usually apply, and failing either disqualifies you.

Certain categories are open to women, notably in the military police, with their own standards and vacancy counts stated in the notification.

Because the percentages, the trades listed under Tradesman and the categories open in a given cycle are all restated in each notification and have been revised, read the eligibility table of the current advertisement rather than an older summary. The Army also publishes category-wise notifications at different times, so the category you want may not be open in every cycle.

This is the stage that changed, and it is now the gate to everything else.

The Common Entrance Examination is a computer based test taken at designated centres after online registration. Only candidates shortlisted from it are called to the recruitment rally. Two features matter for planning:

• It is offered in multiple languages, including Hindi, English and a range of regional languages, so a candidate is not disadvantaged by medium.
• Negative marking applies at the rate stated in the notification, so guessing across the paper is not free.

The paper differs by category. Broadly it covers:

General Knowledge and General Science appear in every category, which makes them the common core worth building first whichever post you are aiming at. The mathematics stays at the level of the qualifying class — Class 10 for General Duty and Tradesman, Class 12 for Technical and Clerk.

The number of questions, the marks, the duration and the negative marking have been stated differently across cycles, so take those figures from the current notification. The single thing that will not change is the sequence: clear the CEE first, and only then does the rally matter.

Candidates shortlisted from the CEE are called to a recruitment rally, where the physical and medical tests take place.

The Physical Fitness Test has long been built around four events, and the running standard is graded rather than pass-or-fail:

The graded run is worth understanding. Finishing inside the Group I time earns more marks than finishing in Group II, so the run is not merely something to survive — it contributes to where you sit on the list.

The Physical Measurement Test checks height, weight and chest with expansion, and the standards vary by region and category, with relaxed figures for candidates from specified hill and tribal areas. This is the part you cannot train for, so check your measurements against the notification before applying.

A medical examination follows, and it is strict — vision, hearing, dental fitness, flat feet, knock knees and general physical standards are all assessed at a level well above an ordinary employment medical.

The final merit is drawn from performance across the stages as set out in the notification. Because the events, timings, marks and measurement standards are restated each cycle and have been revised, treat the table above as the established pattern and confirm the figures for your rally.

The reversal of the stages should reverse how most candidates train, and this is where the largest gains are available.

• Treat the CEE as the real gate. Under the old system, physical fitness got a candidate into the room. Now the written paper does. If you have limited hours, the paper deserves the larger share.
• Build General Knowledge and General Science first, since they appear in every category. History, polity, geography, economy, general science, defence awareness and current affairs, at a steady breadth rather than depth.
• Keep mathematics at your qualifying level — Class 10 arithmetic for General Duty and Tradesman, Class 12 mathematics for Technical and Clerk. Direct questions, practised for speed.
• Do not stop running. The rally still eliminates, and the run is graded rather than pass-or-fail, so a faster time is worth marks. Three to four months of steady running comfortably covers the standard.
• Verify your measurements and medical fitness early. Height, chest and vision cannot be changed later, and finding out at the rally wastes a cleared CEE.
• Practise in your chosen language. The paper is available in several languages, so pick the one you read fastest and prepare in it rather than switching.

The most common failure pattern under the new system is a candidate who spent a year on the ground, is comfortably fit, and never receives a rally call because the CEE score fell short. That is a preparation problem, not a fitness one.
