Salary compared with other railway posts
| Railway post | Pay level | Starting basic pay |
|---|---|---|
| RRB Group D (Level 1 posts) | Level 1 | ₹18,000 |
| RRB ALP | Level 2 | ₹19,900 + running allowance |
| RRB NTPC undergraduate posts | Level 2 - 3 | ₹19,900 - ₹21,700 |

Medical standards matter
Group D posts have different medical categories, mainly based on eyesight, from A-2 (strict) to C-2 (lighter). For example, posts linked to train movement and track safety usually need a higher standard than workshop or office-side posts.
If you do not meet the medical standard of a post, you cannot get that post even after clearing the exam. Get an eye test done before you fill preferences.
Where you may be posted
Group D vacancies are announced RRB-wise for the zones and divisions each board serves. Track Maintainers usually work along sections of track in rural and remote areas, Pointsmen at stations, and Assistants in sheds, workshops and depots.
Choose your RRB with care, since it decides the region of your early posting.
Pension after retirement
Railway employees who joined on or after 1 January 2004 are under the National Pension System, with 10% of basic pay plus DA from the employee and 14% from the government. Since 1 April 2025, they can opt for the Unified Pension Scheme, which assures 50% of the average basic pay of the last 12 months after 25 years of service.
How to prepare
- General science - Class 10 physics, chemistry and biology carry a big share; revise NCERT books.

Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 certificate for date of birth.

- Caste, EWS or non-creamy layer certificate in the central government format, where relevant.
- Photo identity proof and recent photographs, as asked at document verification.
Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring PET practice until the result.
- Not checking the medical standard of each post.
