Mountain Passes of India — State-wise List with PYQs

Mountain Passes of India — State-wise List with PYQs

Mountain passes are one of the most reliably asked topics in Indian geography, and one of the easiest to lose marks on. The questions are always the same shape — a pass is named and you supply the state, or a state is named and you supply its passes. Nothing about the list ever changes. This post arranges every pass that exams ask about, state by state, with what each one connects, followed by previous year questions.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Nathu La and Jelep La — Sikkim, on the route towards Tibet
  • Rohtang, Shipki La, Baralacha La — Himachal Pradesh
  • Zoji La, Khardung La, Banihal — Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir
  • Bomdi La, Diphu, Dihang — Arunachal Pradesh
  • Palghat, Thal Ghat, Bhor Ghat — the peninsular passes, not Himalayan

1. Passes of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh

PassLocated inWhat it connects or is known for
Zoji LaLadakh regionSrinagar to Leh route; closes in winter
Khardung LaLadakhLeh to the Nubra Valley; among the highest motorable passes
Banihal PassJammu and KashmirJammu to Srinagar; the Jawahar Tunnel runs below it
Pir Panjal PassPir Panjal RangeTraditional route across the Pir Panjal
Chang LaLadakhRoute towards Pangong Lake
Karakoram PassLadakhOn the Karakoram Range, historically on the route to Central Asia
Burzil PassKashmir regionRoute towards Gilgit

Two of these are asked far more than the rest. Zoji La is the standard answer for the Srinagar-to-Leh connection, and it is the pass associated with winter closure of that route. Khardung La is asked as a superlative — one of the world's highest motorable passes — and for the Nubra Valley link. Keep Banihal separate from both: it is on the Jammu-Srinagar road, and the Jawahar Tunnel was built beneath it precisely so the road would not depend on the pass.

2. Passes of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

PassStateNote
Rohtang PassHimachal PradeshKullu to Lahaul and Spiti; the Atal Tunnel now bypasses it
Shipki LaHimachal PradeshSutlej river enters India near here; trade route towards Tibet
Baralacha LaHimachal PradeshOn the Manali-Leh highway
Kunzum PassHimachal PradeshLahaul to Spiti valley
Debsa PassHimachal PradeshKullu and Spiti districts
Lipulekh PassUttarakhandKailash Mansarovar route
Mana PassUttarakhandNear Badrinath, towards Tibet
Niti PassUttarakhandChamoli district, towards Tibet
Muling LaUttarakhandNorth of Gangotri

Rohtang is the most asked pass in this group, and the fact examiners now attach to it is the Atal Tunnel, which keeps the Manali-Leh route open when the pass itself is snowbound. Shipki La carries a second fact worth fixing separately: the Sutlej enters India near this pass. Lipulekh is asked in connection with the Kailash Mansarovar route.

3. Passes of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh

PassStateNote
Nathu LaSikkimRoute towards Tibet; reopened for border trade in 2006
Jelep LaSikkimRoute from Sikkim towards the Chumbi Valley
Bomdi LaArunachal PradeshRoute from Tawang towards Assam
Se LaArunachal PradeshApproach to Tawang; the Sela Tunnel now serves this route
Diphu PassArunachal PradeshNear the tri-junction with Myanmar and China
Dihang PassArunachal PradeshTowards Myanmar
Yonggyap PassArunachal PradeshEastern Himalaya
Pangsau PassArunachal PradeshOn the historic Stilwell Road towards Myanmar

Nathu La is the single most asked pass in this group, and the fact attached to it is the reopening of border trade in 2006. Keep it apart from Jelep La, which is also in Sikkim and is regularly used as the wrong option in the same question. In Arunachal Pradesh, Bomdi La and Se La both belong to the Tawang approach, and Diphu is the one associated with the tri-junction area.

4. Passes of peninsular India

These are not Himalayan passes and are asked separately, usually in questions about the Western Ghats.

Pass or gapStateNote
Palghat GapKerala and Tamil NaduThe major gap in the Western Ghats; Kochi-Coimbatore route
Thal GhatMaharashtraMumbai to Nashik route
Bhor GhatMaharashtraMumbai to Pune route
Shencottah GapKerala and Tamil NaduSouthern gap in the Western Ghats
NaneghatMaharashtraHistoric trade route in the Western Ghats
Amba GhatMaharashtraKolhapur region

The Palghat Gap is the one that appears most often, and it is asked as the principal break in the Western Ghats — it carries both road and rail between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The two Maharashtra ghats are separated in exams by their routes: Thal Ghat for Nashik, Bhor Ghat for Pune. That pairing alone answers most questions on them.

5. Facts attached to specific passes

Some passes are asked not for their location but for a single fact linked to them. These are worth a separate look.

Tunnel projects and border-trade arrangements are the parts of this topic that do change, so if a question turns on the current status of a tunnel or a trade route rather than on geography, confirm it against a recent source before relying on an older note.

7. How to revise this topic

Revise state-wise, never alphabetically. Questions give you a pass and ask for the state far more often than the reverse, and grouping by state means one wrong recall does not take the whole list with it. Fix the groups first: Ladakh and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal, and the peninsular ghats.

Then attach the single distinguishing fact to each of the eight passes in the table above. Those eight cover the majority of questions that go beyond simple location, and they are the ones where a confusable pass sits in the options.

Finally, separate the pairs that examiners deliberately place together — Nathu La and Jelep La, Bomdi La and Se La, Thal Ghat and Bhor Ghat, Zoji La and Banihal. If you can tell each pair apart in both directions, the topic is done.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Which mountain pass is asked most often in exams?

Nathu La, followed by Zoji La, Rohtang and the Palghat Gap. For Nathu La the expected facts are Sikkim and the reopening of border trade in 2006; for Zoji La it is the Srinagar-Leh connection and winter closure.

What is the difference between Zoji La and Banihal Pass?

Zoji La is on the Srinagar-to-Leh route and closes in winter. Banihal is on the Jammu-to-Srinagar road, and the Jawahar Tunnel was built beneath it so the road would not depend on the pass. Both are in the same region and are used as options against each other.

Is the Palghat Gap a Himalayan pass?

No. It is a gap in the Western Ghats between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, carrying both road and rail between Kochi and Coimbatore. Peninsular gaps and ghats are asked separately from the Himalayan passes.

Which pass does the Sutlej river enter India near?

Shipki La in Himachal Pradesh. This is asked as a river question as often as it is asked as a pass question, so keep the fact attached to the pass rather than only to the river.

How many mountain passes should I actually memorise?

Around thirty cover essentially everything asked, and the tables above contain them. Trying to memorise every named pass in the Himalaya is wasted effort; the exam draws from a small, stable set.
