The SBI PO salary is one of the best starting packages in Indian banking. The State Bank of India, the country's largest bank, recruits Probationary Officers through its own exam. A PO joins as an Assistant Manager in Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I).
SBI follows the same industry pay scale as other public sector banks, but gives extra increments at joining, which makes its starting pay higher. This page explains the basic pay, allowances, perks and career path. Check SBI's latest notice for the exact figures.
- The JMGS-I scale starts at ₹48,480.
- SBI gives four advance increments to new POs, taking the starting basic to ₹56,480, as per recent notices.
- POs get DA, special allowance, leased accommodation and other perks.
- An SBI PO can rise to General Manager and beyond over a long career.
SBI PO pay scale
The JMGS-I pay scale has been:
₹48,480 - 2,000 (7) - 62,480 - 2,340 (2) - 67,160 - 2,680 (7) - 85,920
- New SBI POs get four advance increments of ₹2,000 each, so the starting basic is about ₹56,480.
- After that, basic pay rises by yearly increments as per the scale.
This is the main reason the SBI PO starting pay is higher than many other bank PO posts.
Allowances
- Dearness Allowance (DA) - linked to the consumer price index and revised regularly, so it changes with inflation.
- Special Allowance - a fixed percentage of basic pay.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA) - depends on the city of posting, or SBI provides leased accommodation for officers instead.
- City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) - in larger cities.
- Medical aid, Leave Fare Concession (LFC) and other bank-specific allowances.
Bank salaries are not set by the Pay Commission. They follow bipartite settlements between banks and employee unions, so they change when a new settlement is signed.
