Soils of India — Types, Regions and Crops with PYQs

Soils is one of the safest topics in Geography. The classification never changes, one question appears in almost every SSC and Railway paper, and it is always the same shape — a soil is named and you give its region or its crop. There are only eight major soil types worth knowing properly. This post covers each one with its area, colour, crops and problems, separates the pairs examiners use as traps, and ends with 15 real questions from past papers.

Two facts about this list get asked on their own. Alluvial soil covers the largest area in India — roughly 40 per cent — and it is also the most fertile. And black soil is the only one formed from volcanic lava, which is why it is concentrated on the Deccan Trap.

Alluvial soil is further divided into two types that appear in options together. Khadar is the newer alluvium found near rivers, renewed by floods each year and more fertile. Bhangar is the older alluvium on higher ground, away from flooding, and often contains lime nodules called kankar. When a question mentions "new alluvium" the answer is Khadar; "old alluvium" is Bhangar.

Black soil's crack-when-dry property has a name worth knowing: it is self-ploughing soil, because the cracks aerate the soil naturally.

The most-asked fact in this group is the reason for the red soil's colour: it is iron oxide diffused through the soil, not a high usable iron content. Laterite's second fact matters too — its name comes from the Latin word for brick, which is exactly what it is used for in Kerala and Karnataka.

For saline soils, remember the reclamation agent: gypsum is added to reduce alkalinity, and improved drainage is the other half of the solution. Over-irrigation in the canal areas of Punjab and Haryana is the usual cause.

The Chambal ravines are the example examiners reach for whenever gully erosion or badland topography is asked, so tie the three together: gully erosion produces ravines, ravines produce badland, and Chambal is where it is most visible.

What is the difference between Khadar and Bhangar?

Both are alluvial soils. Khadar is the newer alluvium found close to rivers, renewed by fresh deposits during floods each year, and therefore more fertile. Bhangar is the older alluvium on higher ground away from flooding, and it often contains lime nodules known as kankar. Questions usually give the words new or old as the clue.

Why is black soil best for cotton?

Black soil holds moisture exceptionally well because of its high clay content, which suits cotton's long growing season in a region without heavy rainfall. It is also rich in lime, magnesium and potash. Its habit of developing deep cracks when dry aerates it naturally, which is why it is called self-ploughing soil.

Why is red soil red?

The colour comes from iron oxide diffused through the soil, formed by the weathering of crystalline and metamorphic rocks. When the same soil is hydrated it appears yellow, which is why the type is usually called red and yellow soil. It is generally poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and humus.

How is laterite soil useful if it has low fertility?

Heavy rainfall leaches away lime and silica, leaving a soil poor in nutrients. But laterite hardens irreversibly when exposed to air, so it is cut into blocks and used as building bricks, particularly in Kerala and Karnataka. With manure and fertiliser it also supports plantation crops such as tea, coffee, cashew and rubber.

How many questions come from soils in exams?

Usually one question per paper in SSC and Railway exams, and often a second on erosion or conservation in papers with a larger geography section. Because the classification is fixed and the crop associations never change, this topic can be finished completely and then simply revised.
