Air Force Agniveer Vayu: Pattern, Adaptability Test & Eligibility

Eligibility is set out by stream, and the English clause applies to both.

The English requirement is a separate hurdle, not part of the aggregate. A candidate with 75 per cent overall and 45 per cent in English is not eligible. Where English was not a subject in Class 12, the notification specifies how the condition is assessed, commonly through the Class 10 marks — read that clause if it applies to you.

The stream decides which paper you sit, and a Class 12 science student with Mathematics and Physics is eligible for both streams and can opt for both papers together. That widens the range of trades they can be considered for, and it is usually worth doing if the extra preparation is manageable.

Women have been eligible for Agniveer Vayu entry with their own physical standards. The aggregate percentages, the diploma and vocational equivalences, and the treatment of candidates without English in Class 12 are restated each cycle, so confirm them from the current notification.

Keep your documents ready early. Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets showing the English marks, a diploma or vocational certificate where applicable, category and residence certificates, and date-of-birth proof are all checked. A mismatch between the percentage you enter online and the marksheet you produce is a common ground for rejection, so enter the figures exactly as printed.

The first phase is an online objective test, and its content follows the stream you chose.

Three planning points follow.

English appears in every option, which, together with the eligibility clause, makes it the single most important subject in this entry. It is tested at roughly Class 12 standard — grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage.

Physics and Mathematics in the science paper are at the Class 12 syllabus level, so candidates should revise the actual Class 11 and 12 content rather than relying on general aptitude practice.

Reasoning and General Awareness in the other paper follow the usual competitive-exam shape, with an Air Force and defence layer in general awareness — aircraft, ranks, commands, exercises and recent developments.

Negative marking has applied at the rate stated in the notification. Question counts, durations and marking are restated each cycle, so take them from the current one rather than treating the durations above as fixed.

Candidates shortlisted from Phase 1 attend Phase 2, which has two quite different parts.

The Adaptability Test is the part no other entry has. It is conducted in two parts, commonly referred to as Adaptability Test I and II, and assesses whether a candidate's temperament, reactions and attitudes suit the discipline and team life of the Air Force. It is not a test of knowledge, so it cannot be crammed. What helps is honesty, calm answers and a genuine understanding of why you want to serve — candidates who try to guess the "right" personality tend to produce inconsistent responses.

Phase 3 is the medical examination, at a strict standard covering height, weight, chest, vision, hearing, dental fitness and general physical condition, with relaxed height for specified regions.

These events, timings and the conduct of the Adaptability Test are restated each cycle; confirm them from the current notification.

Clearing every phase is not the same as selection. Candidates who pass the online test, the physical test, the Adaptability Tests and the medical are considered for enrolment against the vacancies available, in order of merit. That means the online test score continues to matter after Phase 1 — a candidate who only just scraped through may pass every later stage and still fall outside the vacancies. Aim for a comfortable score in Phase 1 rather than a bare qualification.

• Check your English marks first. The separate 50 per cent condition is the most common reason for ineligibility, and it cannot be fixed after applying.
• Treat English as the core subject, since it appears in every paper option.
• If you have Mathematics and Physics, consider taking both papers to widen the trades you can be considered for.
• Revise Class 11 and 12 physics and mathematics from the textbook for the science paper.
• Train the four PFT events together and do not ignore push-ups and squats.
• Understand your own reasons for joining before the Adaptability Test, rather than rehearsing answers.
