Navy Agniveer is not one entry but two, and choosing the wrong one wastes a cycle. Agniveer SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) requires Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics; Agniveer MR (Matric Recruit) requires only Class 10. They lead to different roles, have different papers, and a candidate eligible for SSR is often better placed there than in MR. The Navy was also the first of the three services to open Agniveer entry to women. This guide covers both entries, the online test, the physical fitness test and eligibility.

Key Points (Quick Revision)

  • Recruitment under the Agnipath scheme for a four-year engagement.
  • Two entries: SSR for Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics, MR for Class 10.
  • Order of stages: Online test → Physical Fitness Test → Medical.
  • Women are eligible, with their own physical standards.
  • Age band is generally 17½ to 21 years.
  • Up to 25 per cent of each batch may be retained in the regular cadre.

SSR and MR — the two entries

Both entries fall under the same Agnipath terms, but the qualification and the work differ.

Agniveer SSRAgniveer MR
Full nameSenior Secondary RecruitMatric Recruit
EducationClass 12 with Mathematics and Physics, plus one of Chemistry, Biology or Computer ScienceClass 10 pass
Typical rolesTechnical and operational branchesCook, steward and hygienist type roles
Test syllabusClass 12 level science and mathematics with English and general awarenessClass 10 level science, mathematics and general awareness

Mathematics and Physics are both compulsory for SSR, and this is the clause that rejects most applications. A Class 12 candidate from the commerce or humanities stream cannot apply for SSR, however strong their marks, and should look at MR or at the other services instead.

The choice matters beyond eligibility. SSR roles lean technical, which tends to mean more demanding training and a broader base of transferable skills. A candidate who qualifies for SSR should usually apply there rather than defaulting to MR because the paper looks easier.

Both entries carry the standard Agnipath features — a four-year engagement, a Seva Nidhi package on completion, insurance cover during service, and competitive retention of up to a quarter of each batch. The percentage requirements, the subject combinations accepted for SSR and whether both entries are open in a given cycle are restated in each notification, so confirm them there.

The online test

The first stage is a computer based online examination, and it decides who is called for the physical test. Its level follows the entry.

For SSR, the paper broadly covers English, Science, Mathematics and General Awareness at roughly Class 12 standard. For MR, it covers Science, Mathematics and General Awareness at roughly Class 10 standard. Negative marking has applied at the rate stated in the notification.

Three things are worth planning around:

  • Science and mathematics are the heaviest part for SSR, and they are tested at the level you last studied them. Revisit Class 11 and 12 physics and mathematics rather than relying on memory.
  • General awareness includes a defence and naval layer — ranks, ships, exercises, commands and recent naval developments — alongside ordinary static and current affairs.
  • English matters for SSR, since it is a separate area rather than something absorbed into general awareness.

Shortlisting for the next stage has been based on the online test against the vacancies available, which means clearing a minimum is not enough on its own — you need to rank within the shortlist. Since the question count, duration, marking and cut-off method are restated each cycle, take them from the current notification.

How to use the weeks before the test. Take one full-length timed paper every week and review every wrong answer the same day, noting whether it was a knowledge gap or a careless slip. Candidates who sit only topic-wise practice sets tend to run short of time in the real paper, because switching between science, mathematics and general awareness costs more time than it seems. In the final fortnight, stop learning new material and revise formulas, defence facts and your error log instead.

Physical Fitness Test and medical

Candidates shortlisted from the online test take the Physical Fitness Test. It is qualifying, and it has more events than a run alone.

EventMaleFemale
1.6 km run6 minutes 30 seconds8 minutes
Squats (uthak baithak)2015
Push-ups15
Bent-knee sit-ups1510

The squats, push-ups and sit-ups catch candidates who trained only for the run. They are quick to build but they must be practised, since they are done back-to-back after running and fatigue makes the counts harder than they look.

A medical examination follows at a strict standard — height, weight in proportion, chest expansion, vision, hearing, dental fitness, and conditions such as flat feet and knock knees. Relaxed height standards apply to candidates from specified regions and communities. Check your measurements against the notification before applying, since they cannot be changed.

These standards are the long-standing pattern and have been restated each cycle; confirm the events, counts and timings for your intake from the current notification.

A simple training routine is enough. Run four or five days a week, building gradually to the full 1.6 km inside the time limit, and finish each session with sets of squats, push-ups and sit-ups done back-to-back. Two months of this comfortably covers the standard for a healthy candidate. Rest days matter as much as training days, because an injury in the final weeks is the most common way a fit candidate loses the test.

A preparation plan for Navy Agniveer

  • Settle SSR or MR on day one. If you have Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics, SSR is usually the better target.
  • For SSR, rebuild Class 11 and 12 physics and mathematics from the textbook, since the paper tests the syllabus rather than aptitude tricks.
  • Add a naval layer to general awareness — ranks, commands, major ships and submarines, exercises with other navies, and recent naval news.
  • Train all four PFT events together, not the run alone, and practise them back-to-back.
  • Check medical and height standards before applying.

Candidates weighing the three services should compare Army Agniveer, where the online exam now precedes the rally, and Air Force Agniveer Vayu, which adds an English condition and an Adaptability Test. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Navy Agniveer SSR and MR?

SSR, Senior Secondary Recruit, requires Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics plus one of Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science, and leads to technical and operational roles. MR, Matric Recruit, requires only Class 10 and leads to roles such as cook, steward and hygienist.

Can a commerce or arts student apply for Navy Agniveer SSR?

No. Mathematics and Physics are both compulsory at Class 12 for SSR. A commerce or humanities student should look at the MR entry, or at the Army and Air Force entries, which have different eligibility.

Can women apply for Navy Agniveer?

Yes. The Navy was the first of the three services to open Agniveer entry to women, and women have their own physical fitness standards set out in the notification.

What is the Navy Agniveer physical fitness test?

Under the long-standing pattern, male candidates run 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds and do 20 squats, 15 push-ups and 15 bent-knee sit-ups; female candidates run 1.6 km in 8 minutes with 15 squats and 10 sit-ups. Confirm the current standards from the notification.

What is the age limit for Navy Agniveer?

Generally 17 and a half to 21 years. The band and any relaxation are restated in each notification, so read the age clause of the current advertisement.

Is Navy Agniveer a permanent job?

The engagement is for four years under the Agnipath scheme. Up to 25 per cent of each batch may be selected for the regular cadre afterwards based on merit and requirement; the rest receive the Seva Nidhi package and a service certificate.
