MP Police SI is the recruitment for Sub Inspector and Subedar posts in the Madhya Pradesh Police, conducted through the state's employees selection board. It is the graduate-level entry into the force, a clear step above the constable recruitment where Class 12 is enough.
Two things decide how you should prepare. The written paper builds the merit, while the physical stages only qualify you - they add nothing to your score but can end your attempt completely. And unlike the constable paper, this one expects graduate-level general studies plus a working command of Hindi, which is the language most of the paper is set in.
What the written paper actually tests
The written examination has been conducted as a computer-based objective paper, and its syllabus is broader than candidates expect from a police recruitment.
The areas it has drawn on are:
- General knowledge and general studies - history, polity, geography, economy and science at a graduate level
- Madhya Pradesh general knowledge - the state's history, geography, culture, districts and schemes
- General Hindi - grammar, vocabulary and comprehension
- Reasoning and mental ability
- Numerical ability and elementary mathematics
- Current affairs, with a state component alongside the national one
The section candidates underprepare almost every time is Madhya Pradesh general knowledge. It is a finite body of material - you can close it in two or three weeks - and it is the part where a candidate from the state, or one who has read it once, pulls clearly ahead of someone preparing only from national books.
For posts with a technical or specialised requirement, an additional subject paper has applied. The number of questions, marks, duration, negative marking and whether a second paper applies to your post are set in the current advertisement and have been revised between cycles - read that document rather than a pattern quoted elsewhere.
Physical tests - qualifying, and where most candidates leave
Candidates who clear the written paper are called for document verification and the physical tests. These do not add marks. They only remove people, and they remove a lot of them.
The Physical Standard Test measures fixed body standards - height for all candidates, chest measurement and expansion for men - with relaxed figures for candidates from notified categories. There is no argument with a measuring tape on the day, and no second chance.
The Physical Proficiency Test is a set of timed and measured events, typically including a run along with events such as the long jump and shot put, with separate standards for men and women. None of it is beyond an ordinary fit candidate who has been training for a few months. All of it is out of reach for someone who starts after the written result.
So the rule that almost nobody follows: start the running and the field events in your first month of preparation, three or four sessions a week. It costs very little study time and removes the one failure that revision cannot fix.
The exact height and chest figures, the list of events, the qualifying distances and timings, and every category relaxation are listed in the current notification. Measure yourself against that document, not against numbers someone told you.

Eligibility - graduation, age and domicile
The educational requirement is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. That single line separates this recruitment from the constable exam and changes the candidate pool completely.
The age window is counted from a cut-off date fixed in the notification, with upper-limit relaxations for reserved categories, women and certain other categories. Two things get missed here. The cut-off date decides your age, not the date you apply, so a candidate can be eligible in one cycle and outside the window in the next. And relaxations generally apply against Madhya Pradesh's own category lists.
Reservation benefits in this recruitment normally require Madhya Pradesh domicile. Candidates from outside the state have usually been able to apply, but against the unreserved quota, which changes the score they need. If you are preparing from another state, settle this before you commit a year.
Some posts have carried an additional requirement such as a driving licence or a specific subject at graduation. The degree recognition rules, the age band with its cut-off date, the domicile condition and any post-specific requirement should be read in the current notification before you fill the form.
How MP Police SI differs from the constable exam
Candidates often prepare for both recruitments with the same material. That works for reasoning and Hindi, and fails everywhere else.
The qualification is different. Constable needs Class 12; SI needs a degree. That alone raises the level of the general studies questions, because the paper is written for graduates.
The general studies is deeper, not just longer. A constable paper tests recall. The SI paper expects you to hold polity, economy and science at the level a general-studies aspirant would - closer to a state service preliminary paper than to a constable paper.
The post is supervisory. A Sub Inspector registers cases, leads investigations and supervises constables, which is why the selection looks for candidates who can handle written work and law alongside fitness.
The competition is smaller but stronger. Fewer people hold a degree, but those who do are usually preparing for several state exams at once, so the cut-off does not fall just because the applicant pool is smaller.
If you are preparing for both, treat the SI paper as your main target and let the constable preparation ride along with it. The reverse does not work.
A preparation plan that respects both halves
Two things must move together here: your general studies, and your body. Candidates who do them one after the other lose the year.
Give general studies the largest block. Take one standard source per subject and finish it before you collect more material. Keep Madhya Pradesh general knowledge in a separate short notebook - districts, rivers, national parks, historical sites, festivals, state schemes and state firsts - and revise it weekly. This is the cheapest section on the paper.
General Hindi is finite. A focused pass through grammar, vocabulary and common error patterns brings most of the available marks within a few weeks, after which it only needs practice papers.
Reasoning and numerical ability improve through timed practice, not new theory. Once the chapters are done, your score moves through speed.
For current affairs, keep one daily source and a fixed slot, and note the Madhya Pradesh items separately - state current affairs is asked and is easy to miss.
Alongside all of this, train for the physical tests from day one, and keep your documents ready - degree marksheets, category and domicile certificates, identity proof. Clearing the written paper is not selection; it is an invitation to the stage where unprepared candidates lose a year they had already earned.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the qualification for MP Police SI?
A bachelor's degree from a recognised university. This is what separates the Sub Inspector recruitment from the constable recruitment, where Class 12 is enough. Some posts carry an additional requirement such as a specific subject or a driving licence, so check the current notification.
Is MP Police SI merit based only on the written exam?
In recent cycles the merit has been built from the written examination, with document verification and the physical tests acting as qualifying stages. Confirm the selection procedure clause in the current advertisement, since this is revised between cycles.
Which section is most underprepared in MP Police SI?
Madhya Pradesh general knowledge. It is a small, finite syllabus covering the state's history, geography, culture, districts and schemes, and candidates who prepare only from national general studies books give away easy marks here.
Can candidates from other states apply for MP Police SI?
Candidates from outside Madhya Pradesh have generally been able to apply, but reservation and category relaxations usually require state domicile, so they compete against the unreserved quota. Read the eligibility clause in the current notification.
When should I start physical preparation for MP Police SI?
From your first month of study. The physical proficiency test involves timed and measured events that a few sessions a week will cover comfortably over several months, but which cannot be built in the weeks between the written result and the call letter.
What is the difference between MP Police SI and MP Police Constable?
MP Police SI is a graduate-level recruitment for a supervisory post that registers cases and leads investigations, with a deeper general studies paper. The constable recruitment needs Class 12 and tests recall-level general knowledge.
