KPSC SDA is the recruitment of Second Division Assistants in the Karnataka government. It is held by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), based at Udyoga Soudha, Bengaluru. SDAs do the day-to-day clerical work of state offices - files, registers, letters and data entry.
SDA is the entry-level clerical post. The senior clerical post is the First Division Assistant (FDA). The two exams look alike, but the eligibility is different. SDA has been open to candidates who have passed PUC (class 12), while FDA needs a degree. This makes SDA one of the most applied-for exams in Karnataka.
- A written competitive exam with two objective papers - general knowledge, and languages with computer knowledge.
- The academic requirement has been a pass in PUC or an equivalent exam.
- Candidates who did not study Kannada must clear a compulsory Kannada language test.
- Marks, negative marking, age band and vacancies are fixed in each KPSC notification - confirm them there.
SDA vs FDA - the difference
KPSC recruits both clerical cadres. Know which one you are aiming for.
| Point | SDA | FDA |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Second Division Assistant | First Division Assistant |
| Level | Entry-level clerk | Senior clerk |
| Qualification (typical) | PUC (class 12) or equivalent | Bachelor's degree |
| Exam | Two objective papers | Two objective papers |
| Interview | No | No |
| Promotion | Can be promoted to FDA as per rules | Next step is the superintendent level |
Graduates can usually apply for both, since a degree holder has also passed PUC. For the FDA exam in detail, see the KPSC FDA guide.
Exam structure at a glance
Selection rests on the written exam, with a few qualifying steps around it.
| Stage | Nature | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Kannada language test | Qualifying, for those who did not study Kannada | Proves knowledge of Kannada |
| Competitive exam | Two objective papers | Decides the merit |
| Document verification | Certificate check | Final step before the selection list |
| Computer literacy test | After appointment, during probation | Needed to complete probation |
There is no interview for SDA. The merit list is drawn from the marks of the two papers.
The papers, marks, duration and negative marking are printed in each notification. Plan from the latest one.

The two papers
The competitive exam has had two objective papers.
General Knowledge has covered:
- Current events of national, international and Karnataka importance
- History, culture and geography of India and Karnataka
- The Indian Constitution, polity and the economy
- General science and everyday science
- Mental ability, reasoning and basic arithmetic
Languages and computer knowledge has covered:
- General Kannada - grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage
- General English - grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage
- Computer knowledge - basics of hardware, software, MS Office and the internet, in recent cycles
The questions are pitched below the degree level, but the competition is high. Negative marking has applied in KPSC objective exams, usually a quarter of the mark for a question per wrong answer. Confirm the rule in the current notification.
Kannada test and computer literacy
Compulsory Kannada test. A candidate who has not passed Kannada as a first or second language in SSLC or an equivalent exam must clear a compulsory Kannada language test held by KPSC. It is qualifying. Its marks are not added to the merit, but failing it makes the candidate ineligible.
Computer literacy. Under the Karnataka Civil Services (Computer Literacy) rules, a newly appointed government servant must pass a computer literacy test within the probation period. Without it, the probation is not declared complete.
The exemption rules, test syllabus and time allowed are given in the notification and the service rules. If you did not study Kannada in school, start preparing for the Kannada test at once.
Who can apply
The academic requirement has been a pass in PUC (class 12) or an equivalent exam recognised by the state. Candidates with higher qualifications can also apply.
The age limit is counted on a date stated in the notification. There are relaxations for reserved categories, persons with disabilities, ex-servicemen and other groups under Karnataka rules.
Reservation applies to candidates from the reserved categories of Karnataka. This includes the state's horizontal reservation for women, rural candidates and Kannada-medium candidates.
Kalyana Karnataka (Article 371J). The districts of the old Hyderabad-Karnataka region - Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari and Vijayanagara - have special provisions under Article 371J. Local cadre posts are reserved for candidates with a local residence certificate.
The qualification, age band, relaxations, 371J rules and vacancies are set in each notification. Check them before applying.
Karnataka GK - what to cover
Karnataka questions form a large part of the GK paper. Treat the state as a subject in itself.
- Formation - the Kannada-speaking regions were joined as Mysore State on 1 November 1956. It was renamed Karnataka on 1 November 1973. 1 November is Karnataka Rajyotsava.
- Dynasties - the Kadambas, the Gangas, the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara empire, the Wodeyars of Mysore, and Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
- Heritage - Hampi, Pattadakal and the Hoysala temples, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola.
- Reformers and fighters - Basavanna and the Vachana movement, Kittur Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna.
- Geography - the Kaveri, Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, Jog Falls on the Sharavathi, and Mullayanagiri as the highest peak.
- Literature and culture - Jnanpith winners such as Kuvempu and D. R. Bendre, Yakshagana and the Mysuru Dasara.
District counts and scheme names change. Verify them from official state sources close to the exam.
How to prepare for KPSC SDA
Give both papers equal time. Handle the Kannada and computer needs early.
Karnataka GK first. Use a standard Karnataka GK book. Keep a notebook of dynasties, rivers, parks, Jnanpith winners and schemes.
School books for GS. State Board and NCERT books from class 6 to 10 cover most of the history, geography, polity and science asked at this level.
Kannada and English. Work through grammar topic by topic. Solve previous papers in both.
Computer basics. Learn MS Office, internet and file basics. They help in the exam and in the computer literacy test.
Previous papers. Solve old KPSC SDA and FDA papers under exam timing. Many question types repeat.
For similar clerk-level exams in other states, see the Kerala PSC LDC, TNPSC Group 4 and SSC CHSL guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring the Kannada rule. Without Kannada in SSLC, the language test is compulsory.
- Treating the language paper lightly. Kannada, English and computers carry half the marks.
- Guessing freely. Negative marking turns guesses into lost marks.
- Missing the 371J certificate. Kalyana Karnataka candidates need it to claim local cadre posts.
- Using an old scheme. Work only from the current notification.
